Well the team managed to have One 3 game losing streak, and one occurrence of losing 2 in a row. Best yet we had Three different times where the team had back to back ties. Had more ties streaks than losing streaks. PROGRESS
Thanks for the confirmation. And agreed - it would depend on lower seeds (if any exist) beating higher seeds. This week is reminding me of how buying season tickets alleviates any of what I consider “ticket acquisition” stress.
Is the whole thing about not winning two games in a row this year technically true if we win on Sunday? I know this is literally the least consequential conversation we could be having right now, but last night's match technically started back in July. What part of the calendar does the record book officially list that match? The form guide on the MLS website still has the result in the original spot.
If we finish 5th: We cannot host in the second round. We could host the conference final against 6th or 7th if they advance. If we finish 6th: We could host the second round against 7th if they advance. We cannot host the conference final. When we make MLS Cup we would not host against LAFC, Austin, or Dallas, but could against any of the other contenders depending on Sunday's results.
If we had won the game, we would be going to New York to play NYC in an undetermined location, not Yankee Stadium. I would have liked our chances, they haven't been playing that well lately. Sigh.
This guy recalculated the MLS table based only on conference games. It's interesting to see the effect of cross-conference results on the table. If cross-conference games were excluded, we make the playoffs, Portland jumps from 8th to 3rd, and Austin drops from 2nd all the way to 8th. As a reminder, here's our results against WC teams: W 4-0 vs Vancouver D 3-3 @ San Jose L 0-1 vs Nashville D 0-0 @ SKC L 0-2 vs LAFC D 0-0 @ RSL D 1-1 @ Colorado D 1-1 vs Portland https://jonmarthaler.com/2022/10/13/mls-conference-champions.html
I don't think we can claim we got hosed by having to play 8 matches vs the West. Going 1-2-5 in those matches for 8 points is what hurt. Being shut out 4 of the 8 is just another indicator of our lack of offense.
I wouldn’t hate it but if you don’t count the games vrs western conf what would be the point of playing them? NFL rotates the other teams you play i don’t know how it works in Europe but I imagine most don’t play every team like in La liga ? if they do perhaps that’s why they don’t do a playoff .this season we have 28 teams so to play everyone twice that would be 54 games and that’s not going to happen
It's a lot easier when many European countries can combine to fit inside Texas, there's only 20 or so teams per league and there may be multiple teams in the same city. (Ex: How many EPL teams have called London home over the past 4-5 years? You gotta figure 1-2 have been relegated over the past few years.) I don't see a single table happening for MLS, but I do wish they'd experiment with divisions similar to other US pro leagues. Rothenberg, Hunt, Anschutz and... Gadzidis?
Yes, and they don't have playoffs to determine the league winner. The season is played and the team with the most points is the champion. Of course they have plenty of other competitions too, domestic cups, Champions or Europa league, etc.
Our western conference opponents finished 1st, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, and 14th. I'd actually be kind of surprised if that wasn't the easiest cross-conference schedule in the league. I'm sure there are lots of ways you could divide up the season (what if we only count weekend games? what if we don't count July?) that would alter the standings in some way but don't have any meaning beyond random noise.
I'm not really sure how much of a rationalization it is anyway. Five draws in eight games? Seems like just another accurate representation of things.
