Isn’t he a deeper player? Either way, he’s playing a lot of minutes in a brown man league. Should help him a lot

Balogun with another goal today. He now has more goals in Ligue 1 (7) than Messi (6) and just three fewer than Mbappe’s Ligue 1 leading 10.
It’s not necessarily out of character, more an indication that he still needs a lot of development. It’s pretty common for young players who are considered to have vision and passing as a strength to give the ball away a ton. They need games against men to learn to speed up their processing on the passes they see before trying them.
He also had 3 tackles, 4 interceptions, 2 clearances, and 1 blocked shot. Those numbers get you points in whoscored.com’s ratings too.
I didn’t expand earlier, but including your scenario, there are any number of possible explanations, but without watching the game it’s impossible to determine why his passing percentage was so low. It may be related to how Blackpool play. As a team they complete 70 percent of their passes and average 42 percent possession. So they aren’t a possession based team, they are probably very direct, which can influence pass completion percentages. This pattern was repeated in the game in question, where they averaged 42 percent possession and Petino’s 28 attempted passes was joint second most, just three short of the most attempted passes by a Blackpool player. Having won the game 4-2 on 42 percent possession, it’s possible they were pressed and broke the press often enough to win the game. If they were pressed, did that affect Petino’s accuracy, or were his targets too passive allowing the defenders to step in front of them. Unless someone has a tape of the game, it’s all speculation, but it’s not all bad news, Petino is completing 71 percent of his passes on the season.
If he's making Elneny backwards/sideways passes all game and only completes 11 of 27, that's awful. If he's playing mostly thru-balls and crosses that, if they connect, lead directly to shots on goal, then it's not so bad.
in case anyone is curious: he's playing pretty close to what we're expecting from xhaka, maybe a tad deeper (in our standard preferred formation). the goal looked well struck and the assist was real nice. a lot of the missed passes looked like speculative passes and/or clearances. the elneny/denilson passes looked mostly well done. some touches were loose/sloppy. best thing, for me, is it looks like he's battling physically. a lot of it probably comes down to learning timing of teammates and against grown-up competition.
Most of those were passes inside or into the final 3rd. I don't know the exact definition of a "key pass" but most would seem to fit that definition whether real or potential. Also, it seemed a lot of those passes were perfectly placed, but the Blackpool teammates waited for the ball instead of coming to it. That's not Patino's fault. I went in skeptical, but came out reasonably pleased.
it's hard, too, because a lot of incisive passes require you to know how your teammates react. i'd imagine a lot more of those will work out better around the end of the season with more playing time together.
Auston Trusty with one of the luckiest/most brilliant CB goals you'll see: https://streamff.com/v/vAmOkmKg3N
Which was that one? I remember Eboue for the Ivory Coast scored a cock goal when running down a goal kick...
Doing much better than expected. Would like to see him get one more loan to a lower half EPL or maybe even a top 10 France/Germany/Spain to see if he continues to impress.
