Let the "silly season" begin. ['cause we failed to make the play-offs, or even the play-in] Kudos to our friend @Jiggly_333 who posted the following in the 2020 Roster Speculation Thread https://www.chicagofirefc.com/post/...c-exercise-2021-contract-options-four-players So, this is what we have now, which is way better than most years at this time, when we have 9 or so players. Goalkeeper (4): Chris Brady, Kenneth Kronholm, Bobby Shuttleworth, Gabriel Slonina Defender (10): Jonathan Bornstein, Francisco Calvo, Johan Kappelhof, Miguel Navarro, Wyatt Omsberg, Mauricio Pineda, Andre Reynolds II, Boris Sekulić, Nicholas Slonina, Carlos Terán Midfielder (11): Ignacio Aliseda, Javier Casas Jr., Przemysław Frankowski, Gastón Giménez, Brian Gutiérrez, Fabian Herbers, Alex Monis, Álvaro Medrán, Djordje Mihailović, Allan Rodríguez, Luka Stojanović Forward (2): Robert Berić, Elliot Collier
The Fire exercised the 2021 contract options on the following four players: forward Elliot Collier, midfielder Djordje Mihailović, defender Wyatt Omsberg and defender Nicholas Slonina. Thank whatever deity you wish to thank we resigned Elliot Collier. What could we do without him?
We should have by far the most complete team going into the new season than we've had in a long time. Need- 2 defenders, depending on where Kap plays (and that he's still the same player after injuries), a combination of a CB and an outside back. Upgradeable- The bench- could use work, but players like Sekulic and Calvo could absolutely take these roles if new defenders are signed. We need a better threat off the bench than Collier. Keeper- if Shuttleworth hadn't come on so strong, this would have been in my "need" category.
Did you see how many times he "almost" got to the ball or "almost" go the shot off or "almost" hit the post? Why, I bet he may have even "almost" scored once or twice this season. 21 games played (out of 23 games this season) 519 minutes played 20 shots 7 SoG 0 goals. Strangely, he actually played more minutes in 2018 (in 16 games) than this year and, of course, he scored a goal in 2018 (which he scored in his very first appearance for the Fire).
Most complete yes, as in the "most bodies on the roster," but this team is need of major upgrades. Say What? Bench our "captain"?!? Collier should be a threat on the bench. He is no threat off the bench.
CJ Sapong leaving had better be at CJ's request. Not resigning him makes no sense otherwise (unless the Fire are planning on making a big splash in the transfer market for a named striker...not likely).
I'm gonna be honest, Elliot Collier was probably one of the only players on the Fire this season consistently playing to the peak of his ability. He doesn't have a very high peak, but boy was he trying the whole time. And in a season where almost every single player other than him was under-performing, it made him stand out. That may have been why he got that option picked up. So was Collier complete sh!t? No, he did what he could. Should we keep Collier? Also no, we need to do better than him. This offseason should essentially be dedicated to finding better players so that we don't have to have guys like Collier out there on the pitch.
It better be. I may not be a huge CJ Sapong fan, but this would be a completely idiotic move otherwise.
It was not his request. He was open to re-signing at a cheaper price. They have already identified his replacement.... an international. Sigh... It looks extremely likely no one from 2017 will stay on the team
I'm okay with Collier. He's the last guy on your roster that never plays but is just there. I am not okay with him making the 18 and even worse, playing.
5 reasons the Chicago Fire missed the 2020 MLS playoffs. https://www.chicagotribune.com/spor...n6jbdtfafsavkr2hkha-story.html?outputType=amp 1. The Fire won 0 games on the road. 2. The Fire were 0-9-4 when conceding first. 3. The Fire couldn’t keep leads — or put games away. 4. The Fire were winless in their final 6 matches. 5. The Fire left it too late to rebuild their squad.
Well, considering only Kappelhoff and Djordie have been on the team since 2017, that is not exactly a major revelation. Add Collier and you have the total from 2018, as well.
this is really disappointing. The hallmark of the 1st ten years of this club was success and players with history at the club. Every since, it's been failure and 3 year plans that are blown up a year early. was really hoping the new staff would change this pattern immediately.
