As long as I am strolling down memory lane, here are photos of a Jason Hernandez appearance (I think it was 2008) at Laurelwood school. Players would come out and give a talk about healthy eating etc, to a school wide assembly at the end of the school day. I made sure my class welcomed the players and escorted them to the field, and were attired in EQ shirts and provided with Beat L.A. signs etc. I would have nets and balls set up and then the players would do some activities with kids and sometimes teachers involved out on the grass behind the school. Players would sign autographs at the end. During the year I'd also bring out Quakes players for more specific appearance to individual classrooms or grade-levels (ie reading a book, or later the Keep Earthquakes Fit program). The photo showing Jason with his hand on his forehead might make a good "Make up your own caption" contest.
I am applying to be the new GM, and using these posts as my curriculum vitae. (Also, one of my former students might still be on BigSoccer and I thought he might like them).
OK, well, come to think of it, I'm looking for a good place to share some photos with my family. Anyone mind if I use this thread?
Generally they barely know who the Quakes are, and may have barely kicked a soccer ball. Is that disqualifying in any way??
@NedZ hopefully you know I made that comment in jest. I don’t care how many scrapbook photos you post here - they’re kinda cool, and I’ve never been a “threads must stay on topic” stickler of any kind. In fact I have been known to throw many a thread out of kilter .
Thanks Jazzy, don't worry no offense taken. Not that I expect anyone to recognize any value in someone else's photos, but I like these photos (and see a connection to the GM thread) because they illustrate that guys like Waibel, Jason Hernandez (and Chris Leitch) do have a Wee Man type of belief in club and community contact and it shows in their appearances, which I think is a valuable point to consider when someone is being considered for a GM position. I've brought a lot of soccer players to schools over the years from the Blackhawks to the Clash to the MLS Spartan Earthquakes to the the 2008 Quakes. It is very interesting to see some of the different personalities and how they manifest themselves in that setting. For example, John Doyle wanted the set-up rearranged a certain way for his appearance, and directed it to be so. Eddie Robinson made an impression by showing up late, while Wade Barrett was an exemplar of professionalism and sincerity for the kids. Some players are there because they were told to be there. Some, such as Joe Cannon and Shea Salinas, really connect with the kids. And the kids in the photos were obviously happy to see these guys.
They said this September. But they might not announce Chris Leitch, er the new GM, until the end of the month. I haven’t even heard any rumors or reports of them interviewing anyone, including CL. Anyone else here anything. Go Quakesfans!! - Mark
@JazzyJ hasn't posted his recommended family members yet. Once that's done, the real evaluations can begin.
Update: #Quakes74 GM update: I'm told there are 4 finalists: Craig Waibel, Chris Albright, Chris Leitch & an unknown mystery candidate. I'm told this candidate is *not* Pat Onstad, who was involved in an earlier round of interviews. (I suspect he'll pursue #ForeverOrange GM job).— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) September 14, 2021
I knew that guy from LAFC/Yankees wasn't going to get the job. Didn't even make the finals. We didn't want him and he didn't want us. I also know (no inside info) that there's only one guy on the remaining list who's gonna get the job and his first name starts with a 'C'. (and his last name starts with an 'L')
Yeah, we have similar experience over the years with players on various stages of the Clash/Quakes and can call out Joe and Shea as being awesome with the kids. My wife had a terrible experience with TT who was late to run a practice, talked more about himself, and didn't connect with the kids.
“Mystery candidate” = Frank? He’s been hanging around. Can you imagine Frank working with Matías? Frank: What are you on aboot, mate? Are you knackered?” Augustine: ??? Matías: Que dice el gringo loco?
Frank Yallop is a wonderful guy and a class act. I think he is well liked by almost everyone. Having said that, he has been a failure at every club except coaching the Quakes in 2001-2003 and 2010,2012. Five good years and fifteen bad. Both as coach and GM. Very poor results for Canadian NT, LA, Chicago, Phoenix, Fresno and Las Vegas. If Fisher makes the mistake of hiring him I would expect the team to be worse than under John Doyle.
We won't be hiring Frank, nor should he hire Frank. Frank is not a GM, and as you outlined, not a very successful head coach (outside of his Quakes experience).
