According to the Athletic, Chicago Fire is looking to update their badge for 2022.

Looks good. Only complaint is the blank back. Hate how Adidas doesn’t allow the design to wrap around the back.

Odds that their secondary jersey (and shorts/socks) will be white?

It'd be nice if they went with green-white stripes and white shorts+socks as a secondary.

I think the "blank back" issue is a directive from FIFA. I think they need the back to be blank to make number identification easier.

I could be wrong on this, because I think Newcastle United doesn't have a blank back on their shirts.

I can say that from a referee's perspective, having a solid back does make the identification of numbers (when needed) a lot easier. I get it isn't the most visually pleasing.

In a previous life, I worked with an Opta-style company and logging actions for Newcastle games were a ********ing nightmare.

And yes, Chicago is moving away from their rebrand. Shows that the new ownership listens to the fans.

Because I'm sure everyone is waiting for the explanation for the jersey:

I'd just love for one of these teams to walk out a spokesperson to say, "You know why the jersey looks like it does? Because we like it, that's why."

Austin could have just said, "We think black and green look good together (they do), and the striped look is pretty unique in MLS. No other reasons for it, we think it's cool. Any questions?"

Or, they could just say, "You know, we like a lot of what Atlanta and Seattle did as expansion clubs and we feel that the best way to honor that is by copying the design of Atlanta's inaugural primary jersey and then using the color from Seattle's primary jersey." ;)

As far as "throwing shade" goes, that was a really solid effort. :D

I give it a solid B-. :) It's a perfectly fine jersey and I don't really have any issues with the design and colors. I just thought it was funny how similar they were with 2 of the more unique brands in MLS.

Sassuolo in Serie A also don't have a blank space...

Also, the green is supposed to look brighter in person than what the first pics of the Austin kit above show...

I believe it's not a FIFA issue but an MLS specific issue

I copied this list from the 2020 forum and updated it for 2021 to the best of my ability. Can anyone provide more info? I know some larger markets are getting Third jerseys as well.

I think teams will keep the 90s inspired jerseys and change the other ones. Most of your list seems to reflect that. I'd make a couple changes:

    Atlanta: Home
    Austin: Both
    Cincinnati: Away
    Chicago: ?
    Colorado: Away
    Columbus: Home
    Dallas: Away
    DC: Away
    Houston: Away
    Kansas City: Home
    LAG: Away
    LAFC: Away
    Miami: Home
    Minnesota: Away
    Montreal: Home
    Nashville: ?
    New England: Away
    NYRB: Home
    NYCFC: Home
    Orlando: Home
    Philadelphia: Away
    Portland: Home
    Salt Lake: Away
    San Jose: Home
    Seattle: Away
    Toronto: Home
    Vancouver: Home

I'm not sure what you mean by 90s inspired jerseys. If it is the three stripes on the shoulder one that is our current away. Houston is on schedule to get a new home jersey. So it should at least be that but as RGRAY says, we may get both with the new logo.

Yes, you're right. It's the home jersey that should be changing next season for the Dynamo, not the away.
The three stripes on the shoulder look is specific to MLS for its 25th anniversary and is supposed to be a nod to the adidas jerseys of the 90s.

With the fans choosing the Union’s away jersey design I expect it to be in the Philadelphia flag colors. Fans have been asking for that since day one.

Adidas really jacked up the color on their website at the launch. From what I can tell they have now taken the model off with the bucket hat and turtle neck thank goodness. I love the kit. I think it makes sense for the first kit. We have the future ahead of us to get weird with it.
