I didn't mind the first part, to be honest, for that very reason--if this wasn't a cup final it would have been disappointing, but I was OK with both teams playing a bit tense/nervy.
This is a league match hosted by Portland. Does that change anything? This happened in our section and the gratifying feeling watching him get escorted out while everyone booed him https://t.co/6HRbtOxUe9— Megan Reyes (@meganreyes__) December 11, 2021 Surrounding fans outed the beer-thrower and he's been removed.— Rebekah (@rebekahpdx) December 11, 2021
Eh. Two cans were thrown. It wasn't the pelting with trash that we see in some CONCACAF games. Probably nothing as long as the individuals who threw the cans were promptly removed and banned.
I really like the Navy ones today. Better than the anchor helmets they've worn in recent years. I just like that Army, Navy, and Air Force wear the same thing every game except for the ones against each other.
It was one guy, he got identified and kicked out immediately, and the other fans all booed him (according to the tweet above). The club shouldn't be punished for just that, IMHO.
Washington State (shoutout @Ismitje) has helmet decals of Cougars in script instead of their standard WSU logo that they only wear in the Apple Cup. Washington just sticks with our block W.
The fan who threw the object was ejected from the game, and has been banned from Providence Park. There is zero tolerance for behavior of that kind.— Portland Timbers (@TimbersFC) December 11, 2021
After the first few years of neutral site finals the atmosphere's got pretty lame, and in some cases pretty small. It was a welcome change when they moved to on-site in 2011- and it has been good.
Yeah, you can't hold a club responsible for the behavior of every single person who buys a ticket. It's fair to hold a club responsible for widespread fan misconduct (which only happens if a club allows it to escalate to that point), or for failing to take appropriate action when fan misconduct happens. But neither of those things took place here.
I liked what Kansas wore against Texas Tech this year. Blue on blue with what they call the Bowtie K helmet that we called the hurricane helmet.
Though I think there would be more fans willing to travel than there were in 2011, just because of the nature of and support for the post 2009 expansion clubs.
I went to the 2008 MLS Cup final because it was part of the LA Galaxy season ticket package that year. The atmosphere really was lame. It didn't get much louder than the Riot Squad's halfhearted attempt to rickroll the stadium.
Besides MLS Cup and Army-Navy, a couple other events going on with good fan support for their teams. Morocco vs. Algeria in an Arab Cup Quarterfinal in Qatar is in the PK phase (it was 2-2 after extra time), and St. Bonaventure vs. Connecticut basketball in Newark.
Algeria advance on PK's, 5-3. Rais stopped Morocco's 4th attempt from the spot, which proved to be the difference.
