FIFA have already trialed three team groups (1982 second round) but ditched the idea after one tournament.

Ok, let me clarify: no one's willing to trial three-team groups in the first round of tournaments, with two teams in each moving on.

Well, I guess we’ll see if anything changes with the expansion, but the current version doesn’t seem to be attracting too much interest on Reddit at least.

The first post shown in the screenshot is a post-match thread for the CWC opener. The second is the post-match thread for I think the Norwegian league pro/rel play-off final.

The numbers that are cut at the bottom are 178 (upvotes) and 46 (comments).

Keep in mind that the 2021 CWC might start the same way...still to be seen if the AFC 3rd-place vs. OFC champ playoff will happen before or as the opener for the tournament.

Yeah, FIFA’s really banking on big TV deals and large attendances for the big Euro clubs considering about a third of the tournament is going to be matches like “Wydad Casablanca vs Persepolis in Shenzhen” with like 5,000 people in the stands.

I guess only time will tell if this is a masterstroke from FIFA or a colossal debacle.

More like two games: assuming the pots for the draw are by confederation, 6 of the 8 groups will include a Conmebol side, so that non-Euro match will include plenty of rabid South American fans (don't know how many will go from Ecuador to support IDV, to be fair).

Or even watch them on TV.**

That's the thing. Even "rabid" South American soccer fans won't care that much unless its their club that is participating. Huge difference between national teams and club teams. And that's why the potential of this Club WC is quite limited, even once some of the problems with the current format are eliminated (e.g. having a semifinal played at the same time as a Barca v Madrid clasico, etc).

** That said, if its a team from a 'smaller' nation like Ecuador or Portugal, then a good level of enthusiasm might be generated across the country even for a club competition (enough to get people to watch on TV at least). But how many teams from such countries will qualify?

If you were to point out the current CWC's first game coinciding with the last matchday in the UCL, that's definitely a structural problem.

But there's nothing FIFA could've done to anticipate tomorrow's schedule conflict, with Barça/Madrid having been rescheduled due to political instability.

I get all that. My point was there will always be bigger, more appealing matches elsewhere conflicting with the club WC under the existing format and timing. This year its el clásico, next year maybe it’ll be Liverpool v United or Juve v Inter.

MLS teams may soon meet the likes of Liverpool at expanded 2021 Club World Cup:

MLS daydreaming or do they know something we don't?

It (as in, a country cap) has been mentioned since the start (such as this article from October https://en.as.com/en/2019/10/24/football/1571916175_506197.html)

The only really logical limits are 1 or 2 teams from a country - so the MLS statement would probably be correct.

And, given it gives an MLS team a better than even chance of adding US media interest to a competition that is going to need to generate a fist-full-o-cash (TM) it doesn't surprise me in the least.

Definitely daydreaming with the assertion that this has all been decided. But:

    - If FIFA do put a cap of only two entrants per country (applicable to non-champions, if they have any shred of common sense), and

    - Concacaf only sends teams from the 2021 CCL, and thus only 1 champ;

Then yes, that would guarantee a non-Liga MX Concacaf side at the CWC.

I have seen that rumor, just surprised to see it on the official MLS website.

I don't see how UEFA and CONMEBOL can implement a limit. The AFC and CAF have already announced that they won't (although there by competition design you can't have more than two clubs per association). The OFC will have half a spot so a non-starter. If CONCACAF are going to be the only confederation to engineer some kind of association restriction to the benefit of MLS it will be a complete joke that hopefully (hah!) gets turned down by FIFA.

Honestly, I wouldn't even worry about it right now.

I remember the end of 2015 when all sorts of media outlets including As were reporting that due to FIFAGate plunging the 2016 Copa América Centenario into a logistical chaos that only got resolved with months to spare, the organizers had decided to scrap the playoffs for the last two berths and hand them to Panama and Trinidad and Tobago - which pissed me off to no end, as Haiti had earned a playoff spot. About a month or so later, Concacaf finally got around to making an official announcement that the playoffs were happening after all.

That is, wrt this new CWC, I'll wait until FIFA makes an actual announcement one way or another.

If there are any project managers out there, you can now apply for Head of Project for the 2021 CWC. :D

With the growing concern around the coronavirus I am starting to wonder if this could affect the staging of this competition. Kick-off is only about 16 months away. A scenario where 2021 goes to the US and 2025 goes to China wouldn't shock me.

Any news from the confederations about qualifying? Is CONMEBOL still pursuing the "Supercopa" of former Libertadores winners?

Who knows - everyone was expecting some confirmation at the last Copa Libertadores draw, but Conmebol Pres. Domínguez didn't bring it up in his opening remarks.

My guess is they want to use smaller stadiums because they’re not sure bigger stadiums would get filled for the CWC.

But it’s still a tad strange they wouldn’t at least have the final/some of the later stages in Beijing.
