I'm meant vars but I realized afterward how many English FIFA vmos that there were. Still not as many as other countries but enough to cover these games.
Yes, but as discussed earlier on another thread, each of the English VMOs (6 of them) are either FIFA Referees (4) or FIFA ARs (4). So, obviously, for them to be used as VAR/VMO on games, you have to do without them as Referees or ARs on that Matchday. Short-term that can work, but over a period of time, that's not sustainable.
Not sure where exactly this goes so I'll put it here. At 2 mins Netherlands has the ball in Turkeys penalty area, Netherlands player passes it off to an offside player but gets taken out right after. Thought it was kind of interesting because Depay is offside. Still a penalty in my view but what if the timing was a bit further apart?
You bring up a good point. I guess if Depay decided to touch/play the ball then he would be offside but since the call was whistled for foul in the box..... penalty it is.
I'd say the foul is about half a second before you could argue he's committed an offside offense. MLS had a really close one a few weeks at ago that was covered on inside video review.
Yeah I think it's a good thing to look at a bit more closely. What's expected? What would be accepted? I remember maybe it was a Champions League game and I think Barcelona was playing defense and Pique reached out his hand to stop a pass just outside the box, but the player who was going to receive the pass was obviously offside. I think I remember the result was a free kick but no card for stopping an attack, and I think that's the right call.
I thought they covered it well, too. The magic question is whether the OSP attacker committed an offense (presumably challenging an opponent for the ball) before the foul occurred. On some plays, that is an awfully fine distinction.
Very weak handling of that garbage at the end of the half. Let Glik get away with grabbing Walker in the face, Glik was clearly out of control emotionally while the ref was standing two feet away ... and he did nothing. Then it descended to handbags thirty seconds later. An extended conversation or an earlier yellow to Glik might have taken the wind out of the whole conflict. And I really hate that "give Maguire and Glik both cards so it's even" solution he picked, but the TV never showed the presumed incident as they walked off, so I'm not sure.
He looks like he's trying to ref like Brych in Europe, but he doesn't have the command, personality, or respect yet. I wasn't really paying attention to the last minute so I'll take your work on what happened with Gilk.
Sorry, what? Siebert stepped back during the contretemps, kept all the players in his view, and then issued two cautions according to the guidelines, after a long explanation having calmed everyone down. I don't see what else he was supposed to do?
He should have realized who instigated the problem. He is very slow to recognize the tactics and provocation of the Polish defenders who are clearly targeting Sterling and Grealish. PH
Glik was totally faking that injury in order to avoid the 2nd YC he was thinking he might get for the hit on Kane. Now has made a miraculous recovery, just needs one more to be considered for sainthood! PH
He did recognise it, because he cautioned him? And he gave Glik a long warning at the prior set piece to try and prevent this player-player conflict. Sorry, but I thought Siebert was really good again besides those three restart mistakes in the 1H. Well done!
There was the problem. An earlier caution would have prevented this. Glik interpreted this as weakness and took advantage of it. He managed to get an opponent cautioned by his actions. Not "really good" but just OK. As I said previously he failed recognize the Polish roughhouse tactics early enough and take action to put a stop to them. Especially as he had cautioned Philips at 8 mins for a what was really a routine foul. Inconsistent in this regard. A grade of B- for me. PH
He didn't really give Glik a long warning at the prior set piece - he got it over with quickly. To my eyes, Glik was clearly way out of control - he actually pinched Walker in the face at the end of that talking to, something I think was way beyond. He let play resume with the guy still clearly out of control. He cautioned him after Glik appeared to provoke a bigger problem on the way off of the field, but it was barely a punishment since Maguire also got a yellow which I didn't see any justification for (but I'll conceded there could have been something worthy off camera).
I don't know who the CR is in the Dortmund-Leverkusen match from yesterday. There is a strange penalty call that ended up winning the match for Dortmund. It's at the 13:15 mark of this highlights clip. The call is for a hand to the face and was sent down by VAR for review before the penalty was awarded.
It was Daniel Siebert, who was at the EURO and will be Germany's #1 after Brych's impending international retirement.
First one is just a simple yellow, nothing more needed. Second looks like simulation or incidental contact.
I haven't found a clip yet, but Atletico had a goal waved off early in the 2nd half against Espanyol after a VAR offside review. The magic lines showed Suarez's head was just barely ahead of the ball, but the referee then went to the monitor to determine whether Suarez was actively involved in play. He never touched the ball, but he did make a clear attempt to redirect a cross. Replays without lines didn't show a clear and obvious error, so score another one for the magic lines. The review also took way too long.
It’s only strange because these were never given before VAR because either they couldn’t be seen properly or they could easily be ignored. Defender strikes attacker in the face with a pretty distinct motion of his hand. The force is not negligible. The ball is still in play. The attacker did nothing that you can claim mitigated the foul or made it more of a 50/50 scrap. It’s a clear foul and a yellow card if seen. With VAR, we can see it. Welcome to the new era.
