Perusing the roster, we COULD have a SR spot open IF a guy has a salary significantly lower than their 2019 figure. Tarbell, Hamilton, & Sjoberg are candidates. Or if Cadden's deal is only slightly higher than last.

Berry could be a reserve guy.

Just desperately trying to create a roster spot for some CM depth.

    B. General Stuff:

    1. Salary Cap = $4,900,000

    A) On Budget: Only Senior Roster Spots count against the Cap
    B) 20 player max, subject to exceptions for Season Ending Injury, Injury List, and Loans.
    C) Up to 20 Senior Roster spots. 18 must be filled. Min budget charge is made if spots 19 & 20 are not filled.
    D) Max budget charge is $612,500. GAM/TAM Allocation $$ and DP rules can reduce a player's budget charge below their listed salary number.
    E) Off-Budget: Supplemental (21-24) and Reserve (25-30) Rosters do not count towards the salary cap.

    II. Estimated Roster Compositions
    1. Senior Roster: 19/18-20 Players:

It could be in error, but I'm guessing it's accurate. All it really means is that Nagbe is earning above league max and the Crew isn't buying down his salary using TAM/GAM. Quite a few players on this roster make above league max (Santos, Mensah, Adi, Zardes, Zelerayan, Nagbe, perhaps Mohktar). Zelerayan and Zardes make so much that buying them down might not be possible: due to league rules that govern how you can use TAM/GAM; not having enough GarberBux to even do it; or the fact that it might not make any fiscal sense.

Adi, obviously, is an unusual case in that very little of his salary counts against the cap for us this year, even though he's making $2M.

But for the rest of the group, well, since it's only a slight exaggeration to say that Bez pretty much wrote the book on MLS roster acquisition rules, I'm guessing the club simply calculated that the most fiscally advantageous thing to do this year was leave Nagbe as that 3rd DP.

Sad for Vito. Ready for Keita, as well. Hopefully not that much of Josh Williams.

Do we re-sign Crognale (or Maloney)? We'll need practice players and we have the space. Or do we look for another defender? Easier to bring in someone who knows the system.

Damn, this club really can go through defenders. Last season was insane, but here we go again, it seems. 4-6 months is, basically, a season ending injury. Vito, we hardly knew ya'.

Note the wording of the announcement in March about the loan of Axel Sjoberg to San Antonio FC:

My guess is the call has already been made.

Did I miss what Vito actually did to his ankle? Ligaments, break, dislocation, all, none, faking it?

Nothing official about that roster. MLS' site is riddled with errors. That is the reason we have this thread. Just go back and look at INT player discussion from last year that they had wrong, all year. Or the YDP/Diaz/Valenzuela one.

To wit, that roster that some claim is official still has Sjoberg listed as on loan when we know he isn't. Kempin takes a roster spot but Sjoberg does not, even though both are loaned. And I doubt Hamilton is reserve (though that would help us with roster construction).

Having said that, without the salary info for this year, we cannot be certain who got bought down & who didn't. Or even what the salaries are. Until I see that, I am sticking with last year's designations, though fully aware some things could be off.

As for Vito, that royally sucks. Got my hopes up when he posted restaurant pics. 4-6 months is likely the season. However, 4 months would be mid-November. This year is crazy & MLS has played later than that before.

If he is out for the year, we'd get roster relief. We have 2 INT spots open as is. We are not in dire need of another CB: Mensah, Keita, Williams, Sjoberg.

We'll see what happens with his rehab & the schedule.

Interestingly, San Antonio is where Maloney ended up. Both him and Sjoberg played in their first and to date only match. Their match for tonight has been postponed (COVID positive test on the other team).

Based on the description - sliding, foot caught in the grass, rolling ankle - it looks like tendon damage and no break but I'm not a doctor.

Could I just remind everyone that the Crew picked up Sjoberg off of waivers after the Raps cut him?

If hes out there getting serious minutes we're in a lot of trouble

I think he can a late sub as a 3rd CB to help protect a lead. Or be fairly effective in the middle of a 352/532 who plays deep and keeps everything in front of him. He was MLS best XI in such a role (Colorado played 4 in the back, IIRC, but very much laid deep & countered).

Oh, no worries. Post away. The only thing I object to is treating it (or anything else on the MLS site) as gospel. Too long a history of errors, and there are errors now.

However, I think the roster you posted is at least mostly accurate. And aside from the loanee issues, could be 100% so.

We do not know whay Nagbe's salary is. Or Santos'. Or anyone's for this year. I am a tad dubious because there was no hint or report that Nagbe was a DP when we acquired him. Or that Santos wasn't. And Nagbe's salary was significantly below Santos' last year. But I do think Nagbe is worthy of DP status, and we did sign him away from ATL, so anything is possible.

One where, upon reflection, I am less confident in where I have the player is Hamilton. Based on last year's salary, he should be a Senior player. But he was also a Canadian HG. Our HGs earn Senior salaries but remain on the Reserve roster. Hamilton does not count as a HG for us, but he does not count as an INT player either. What that means for his contract/roster status, I have no clue. It wouldbe wonderful for us if he was Reserve, as we could use the senior roster spot.

I believe MLS has Berry on Reserve and Tarbell on Supplemental. Which is certainly plausible. Though Tarbell would have to have taken a big haircut this year.

We usually get a roster update in March, but I bet Covid has tgrown a wrench into figuring compensation. Which is likely dependent on how many games get played, so we may never know.
