I guess he doesn’t know that the quakes trained harder than any other team during the offseason (despite have the easiest preseason schedule).

Sure must be nice to get a cush job on a team where expectations are so low that if they lower the bar any more it will be resting on the ground...

The article didn't say: "Our entertaining model suggests who has the easiest schedule this year".

They took a model and reported it as if it was a fact in advance. Without even saying one hoot about how they concocted the model.

    sweet goal.

“San Jose wins it, the first game in MLS history goes to the Clash! The Casbah is rocking!”

what a day that was, I knew there was a lot of love for the sport here based on the World Cup two years earlier but had no idea there would be such an enormous turnout for the first game of this new league. walking through the grass parking lot outside Spartan was a wonderful sight, rows and rows of soccer families and all the tailgating going on. It felt like a great big celebration of diversity and love for the world's game, so thankful to have been there. Hard to believe that was 24 years ago. very proud day for San Jose.

But shortly before MLS began playing, KNBR's Ralph Barbieri and Tom Tolbert confidently predicted that the league would last "two, maybe three, years tops!"

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! :(

It seems the Quakes are no longer captivating the audience the same way they did 24 years ago. When did it start to decline and was there any clear reasons for it?

I’m assuming the relocation to Houston was the biggest factor but was there any issues before that?

Attendance fluctuated, SJSU was a tough partner but the biggest issue was AEG. They owned both teams (LA & SJ) and when they couldn’t leverage public dollars for a SSS, they pulled the plug. Losing your championship caliber team is a massive momentum buster of course, getting picked up by Fisher has been terrible. Outside the SSS, the team performance has been a D- at best, since ‘08. Fisher has managed to put the soccer loving public here into a sleep coma.

A highly abbreviated version of events follows.

In the first season, we had lots of excitement. We had a name Mexican player, Misael Espinosa, who was really good. BUT, MSL refused to resign him for us, because we were league owned and they didn’t want to spend the bucks on us, and or wanted the evil cheating filth to be the league’s “flagship team.” (An idea so stupid it actually makes me sick to my stomach.) And that was the start of the slide. A lot of fans felt slighted. A lot of fans felt like the league was mistreating us. A lot of Mexican fans stopped going to games.

Then there was the Carols Hermosillo deal, wherein we busted our humps to get him to agree to come to San José, only to have him decide he wanted to play in filthy smogville at the last minute. The league promised us compensation, but never ever delivered. (It was a violation of existing league rules to let him play in el-lay. So they needed to make a trade with us to get him, which they didn’t.)

The Glory Years were great, and we built a decent sized fan base. We were on the right track from 2001 to 2005, but then evil, scum-sucking, corrupt as hell AEG pulled the team off to Houscum. (Another violation of league rules.)

The Resurrection Era as you well know, has mostly sucked like a Dyson.

    Go Quakes!!
    Fisher OUT!!
    F@#$ MLS!!

And then they tell us it’s a small market. San Jose and the rest of the Bay deserves better than this.

exactly. San Jose and the greater area is one of the wealthiest and most diverse parts of the country. We literally have hundreds of thousands of soccer loving people from every corner of the world living here. I sometimes talk to soccer fanatics, players, coaches who laugh off the Quakes and see the team as not worthy of their time, attention and money. The issue in San Jose is not that the fans aren’t here or we’re a small market, this is 100% the case of a small time mentality emanating like a beacon of cheapness for from the top of the organization and trickling down to everyone involved over a period of 12 years now of unrelenting mediocrity.

This off season has been the worst of them all, failing to bring in the players we so obviously need and asking fans to buy into a some half-baked youth development strategy....sure a few will be okay with that, but not nearly enough to make this a sustainable path for growth in the coming years.

2020 is shaping up to be our toughest year yet.

    It’s a damn shame.

At least Ralph Barbieri has been retired for almost a decade now :), even though Tom Tolbert is still working at KNBR (albeit not saying much about MLS nowadays).

However, KNBR's most viscously anti-soccer radio personality seems to be Damon Bruce.

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! :(

    Thanks to Matias bobbleheads.

However spartan stadium use to have a capacity of over 30k. Did they routinely sell out?
