NBA suspending season after a player tested positive for coronavirus. I think we will see a cascade of suspensions/cancellations. Rough sledding ahead -- health tip, don't look at your 401k, bad for your heart.

Yeah, with 401Ks, you need to think long term. Right now you might have a bad loss on paper, but if you cash it out NOW, you'll have a REAL loss. Let it ride!

Liga and Liga 2 are about to get suspended for at least 2 weeks. Every federation in Europe is worried about how / if / when they will be able to recuperate lost games and end the season regularly. European cups are risking to become a farce, with postponed games and some pairings (like Sevilla-Roma) possibly being played in a one only game on neutral field. Uefa needs to realize that it needs to stop EVERYTHING for up to two months, and postpone the Euro 2020 till next year, so perhaps the federations may be able to end their seasons regularly. But Uefa is worried about Nations League (PLEEEEEEEAAAASE) and Fifa is worried about having to cancel their first world cup for clubs (DOUBLE PLEEEEEAAASSEEEE) - like if these were two major tournaments and not a little more than a bunch of friendlies to pocket some extra money... Ceferin is showing his complete ineptitude as a Uefa president.

Ceferin, the Uefa president, has asked Roma and Inter to auto exclude themselves from Europa League... How do you say incompetent in English?

The suspension was announced late in the second half and will not begin until after the completion of today's games. They were playing in front of empty stands.

All of the European leagues should share broadcast money across the teams in each league equally and adjust their schedules.

Assuming North American sports were a bit like elsewhere where there were really small, less financed clubs that would be trouble without a full season -

Can anyone here imagine Jerry Jones or Robert Kraft or Dan Snyder offering to do without their TV money and give it to the lesser clubs just to keep the whole league solvent?

Nearly every minor league Hockey league in North America has announced cancellation of the rest of the season.

Sweden and Russia have announced cancellation of the rest of their seasons.

NHL still on hold. They will do whatever the NBA does.

I think the arena sports are done for the season. Maybe, maybe we will get MLB and MLS back by late June or early July. Question is whether or not attendance will be restricted to continue social distancing. My son and I have tickets to the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal in mid-June. The race is still "officially" on, but even if it's held I'm not going. Those races bring together folks from all over the world so sitting in the stands is like swimming in a petri dish of viruses and bacteria. Maybe next year. I think if there is a Formula 1 season at all, it will be at tracks in Europe -- and maybe the Middle East. Possibly with the stands closed to spectators and the only personnel are teams, media and race course staff. First league that probably comes back in full is the NFL. Given the TV contracts they have, the games could be played in empty stadia and the owners would feel just a slight pinch on their pocketbooks.

Personally, I'd rather not have soccer at all than have soccer without the supporters sections. If they're going to have social distancing in the stadia, they should just cancel the season and keep their fingers crossed for a vaccine by 2021.

Barcelona players to take 70% pay cut to ensure that staff will receive full salary.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...d-coronavirus-college-president-reopened.html

Messi: "On our part, the time has come to announce that, apart from the reduction of 70% of our salaries during the State of Alarm, we will also make contributions so that the club's employees can collect 100% of their salaries while this situation lasts. If we did not speak until now, it was [not only] because the priority for us was to find real solutions to help the club, but also [to help] those who were most affected by this situation."

Barcelona club staff will still get their full pay. Not clear if other clubs with pay cuts for player will also pay staff their full salaries

It's a paycut of 70% of the last 4 months (March through June), rinegociable in case the Liga restarts. Same or similar to Juve and other clubs. Barcelona players had refused this solution until yesterday, but the club had to power to enforce it anyway, in its full right, so it was basically a matter of finding a friendly way to put it down or to go head against head. The only nice gesture here is the extra fund they put aside to guarantee the other employees salaries. The rest is contractual stuff.

In the meantime, Newcastle owner, billionare Mike Ashley, decided to leave the salaries intact for its players and first team staff (negociations fell through) and to cut off the salaries (up to 80%) for all the other employees of the club (https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/newcastle-owner-mike-ashley-pulls-21780878). And a similar decision was taken by Tottenham.
Another epic fail from Newcastle, which only a couple of years ago, had fired a player because he had got cancer.
