I'll come back at some point with roster stats, but let's start out with stating the obvious, but yet unbelievable stat: Formiga has made every Brazil Olympic roster in Olympic women's soccer history....seven straight Olympics, every one from 1996 to 2020/2021.
Roster stats so far: Brazil: Average age: 29.84 or 29 years and 306 days (oldest: Formiga, 43; youngest: Geyse, 23) Olympic newbies: 7 (Leticia, Jucinara, Adriana, Duda, Julia Bianchi, Ludmila, Geyse) # not on 2019 WWC roster: 7 (Erika, Rafaelle, Bruna Benites, Jucinara, Adriana, Duda, Julia Bianchi)...although several missed because of injury and are veterans Japan: Average age: 25.49 or 25 years and 178 days (oldest: Nakajima, 30; youngest: Jun Endo, 21) Olympic newbies: 16 (Ikeda, Yamashita, Shimizu, Miyagawa, Minami, Kitamura, Takarada, Nakajima, Hasegawa, Sugita, Miura, Shiokoshi, Endo, Sugasawa, Tanaka, Momiki) # not on 2019 WWC roster: 3 (Kitamura, Shiokoshi, Tanaka) Netherlands: Average age: 26.28 or 26 years and 103 days (oldest: Sari van Veenendaal, 31; youngest: Lynn Wilms, 21) Olympic newbies: all (1st time the Netherlands have qualified for the Olympics) # not on 2019 WWC roster: 3 (Folkertsma, Nouwen, Wilms)
I just realized that I calculated the average age calculations to today when I should have done it to the start of the Olympics. They'll be slightly off if any roster age averages are super close, in which case I might take a second look, but otherwise, I'm not going back to change it.
The GB squad has been named and already had a replacement brought in. There are 15 English players, two Scots and a S.Ingle Welsh player (see what I did there!) Ellie Roebuck (Man City) Carly Telford (Chelsea) Millie Bright (Chelsea) Lucy Bronze (Man City) Rachel Daly (Houston Dash) Steph Houghton (Man City) Leah Williamson (Arsenal) Demi Stokes (Man City) Sophie Ingle (Chelsea) Kim Little (Arsenal) Jill Scott (Man City) Keira Walsh (Man City) Caroline Weir (Man City) Lauren Hemp (Man City) Fran Kirby (Chelsea) Nikita Parris (Lyon) Georgia Stanway (Man City) Ellen White (Man City)
Alternates: GK Sandy MacIver DF Lotte Wubben-Moy FW Niamh Charles FW Ella Toone Technically, the list hadn't been official yet (turned in to FIFA) because if so Great Britain would have been limited to choosing the alternate MacIver to replace the injured Bardsley. Instead they were able to still call up Telford, and keep MacIver as an alternate. Great Britain: Average age: 28.20 or 28 years and 71 days (oldest: Jill Scott, 34; youngest: Lauren Hemp, 20) Olympic newbies: 14 (all except for Houghton, Little, Scott, and White who were on the GB roster in 2012) # not on a WWC 19 roster (either England or Scotland's roster): 3 (Roebuck, Ingle, Hemp)
I'll underline that one of the reasons why Japan's average age was even lower than expected is that my avatar girl, Aya Sameshima, wasn't called. Also, this leaves just two players in the roster that were World Champions in 2011: Saki Kumagai and Mana Iwabuchi (Sameshima would have made a third one ).
USA: GOALKEEPERS (2): Adrianna Franch (Portland Thorns FC), Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars) DEFENDERS (6): Abby Dahlkemper (Manchester City/ENG), Tierna Davidson (Chicago Red Stars), Crystal Dunn (Portland Thorns FC), Kelley O’Hara (Washington Spirit), Becky Sauerbrunn (Portland Thorns FC), Emily Sonnett (Washington Spirit) MIDFIELDERS (5): Julie Ertz (Chicago Red Stars), Lindsey Horan (Portland Thorns FC), Rose Lavelle (OL Reign), Kristie Mewis (Houston Dash), Samantha Mewis (North Carolina Courage) FORWARDS (5): Tobin Heath (Unattached), Carli Lloyd (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride), Christen Press (Unattached), Megan Rapinoe (OL Reign) Alternates: Jane Campbell, Casey Krueger, Catarina Macario and Lynn Williams USA: Average age: 30.87 or 30 years and 319 days (oldest: Lloyd, 38 and will be 39 by the start of the Olympics; youngest: Davidson, 22) Olympics newbies: 7 (Franch, Dahlkemper, Davidson, Sonnett, Lavelle, K Mewis, S Mewis) # not on the 2019 WWC roster: 1 (Kristie Mewis)
It will be very intersting to see if USA are so strong that they can win the Olympics with what promises to be by far the oldest team in the tournament (30.87 is insanely high and not even Formiga's presence in Brazil managed to beat that).
Age has definitely been a topic of discussion in the USWNT forums, but the fact that we're bringing 2 injured players (or at least recently recovered from injury) in Heath and Ertz is probably more concerning, at least to me.

Canada: Average age: 27.3 or 27 years and 110 days (oldest: Sinclair, 38; youngest: Riviere, 20) Olympic newbies: 6 (Sheridan, Gilles, Riviere, Grosso, Leon, Viens) # not on 2019 WWC roster: 2 (Gilles, Viens)
The bold does make me chuckle a bit under the "newbies" group, considering how important they were to the US winning WWC2019. Edit: Also stickied as it will be a good reference once the tournament starters. Or will be for me. So stickied for selfish reasons.
New Zealand Women’s football squad Goalkeepers: Erin Nayler (Unattached), Anna Leat (FFDP) Defenders: CJ Bott (Vålerenga), Meikayla Moore (Liverpool FC), Ali Riley (Orlando Pride), Claudia Bunge (Melbourne Victory), Abby Erceg (North Carolina Courage), Anna Green (Lower Hutt City AFC) Midfielders: Ria Percival (Tottenham Hotspur), Annalie Longo (Melbourne Victory), Katie Bowen (KC), Daisy Cleverley (Georgetown University), Olivia Chance (Brisbane Roar), Betsy Hassett (Stjarnan), Emma Rolston (Unattached) Forwards: Hannah Wilkinson (Unattached), Paige Satchell (FFDP), Gabi Rennie (Indiana University) Alternates: Elizabeth Anton (FFDP, NZ), Victoria Esson (Avaldsnes IL, Norway), Michaela Robertson (Lower Hutt City AFC, NZ), Marissa Van Der Meer (FFDP, NZ)
New Zealand: Average age: 27.12 or 27 years and 45 days (oldest: Riley, 33; youngest: Rennie, 20) Olympic newbies: 8 (Leat, Bott, Bunge, Rennie, Cleaverley, Chance, Rolston, Satchell) # not on 2019 WWC roster: 5 (Leat, Moore, Bunge, Rennie, Rolston--but Moore was injured)
lil-one, these summary reports you are doing on each team are great! Thanks for putting in the time and effort.

Sweden: Average age: 28.41 or 28 years and 150 days (oldest: Lindahl, 38; youngest: Bennison, 18) Olympic newbies: 9 (Falk, Björn, Glas, Ilestedt, Kullberg, Angeldal, Bennison, Hurtig, Janogy) # not on 2019 WWC roster: 3 (Kullberg, Angeladal, Bennison)
34 yo Linda Sembrant could have probably had the last Olympic tournament of her career, but she tore her ACL in the last part of the season with Juventus.
