4-0-1 so far this season right? Can they do it one more time? Really need to get the first goal to prevent the Rev's bus from parking all night. Good time for the newlywed Kasper to go on a hot streak. Maybe somebody show him the Tim Robbins character from "Bull Durham"?
Anyone get any tickets? I signed up but never got an email with the tickets. Just heard from my ticket rep that they will be sending them out today.
Slopfest so far. Also, I do not understand why they still use TV graphics to cover the stands when there are people in it—can’t see the ball in the air.
Aaronsen gone, pitiful performance, but hey we can gloat about the stupid supporters shield during the off-season. ... this ********ing team...
Yeah, so I watched a good chunk of the game and turned it off around the 70 something minute when it became VERY apparent that they weren't going to do shit. This loss is probably one of the most disappointing and crushing losses to date for this franchise. This team came out utterly flat and lifeless, there are a couple of reasons that I think why and here they are. 1. The Union bought into their own hype. Winning the Supporter's Shield made the team, coaches, and even fans incredibly confident that they'd beat New England the way they have all year. I feel like the last two weeks or whatever since the last competitive Union game was spent with the players and coaching staff basking in the limelight of winning the Shield. Both Curtin and the players are to blame for this fiasco, winning the Supporter's Shield is like winning Presidents' Trophy in the NHL, it's nice and all but without the Stanley Cup it's pretty much worthless. New England were more than happy to allow us to beat them all season, because they beat us the one time it was really worth it. 2. The time off pretty much killed their fitness/timing Yes, it's nice to be rested, but in many sports having THAT much time off means your team pretty much is sitting around with its thumb up its own ass and that can cause problems. Too often tonight there were passes that went nowhere, attack build-ups that pretty much dribbled right into the teeth of New England's defense. Passes to players not making a run, passes that were easily cut off by Revs players, etc. 3. New England came in hungry/angry and the Union didn't New England had a massive chip on it's shoulder, seriously everyone picked the Union to win this game. Pretty much everyone was shitting on New England and Bruce Arena probably turned that into motivation for his players to come out and beat the Union. The Union pretty much were happy with the Supporter's Shield, the Revs wanted revenge. 4. Curtin got outcoached I know Bruce Arena is more of an "old school" coach but the guy is pretty much a legend in MLS for a reason. Yes, we spanked him all season but when the chips were down the Union folded. The out coaching is more than just tactics its having your players in the mindset to be ready and it's more than obvious that after winning the Supporter's Shield, Curtin didn't tell his players, "This is nice guys, but it means NOTHING if we don't win the Cup," yes, people will remember the Shield clinching, but they will now equally remember how it crashed and burned. Also seriously, you need goals and you put on Jack ********ing Elliott? Seriously? What the ******** was Curtin thinking?
Basically the break killed their flow/tempo. Poor accuracy and slow decision making. I didn't really see anything coaching or strategy wise that made any difference. Anyway despite this failure the union have been on an upward trend. It looks like we are going to have a lot of turnover of some important pieces tho so the next test is if we can deal with that and continue on this path or if we will see a drop off.
After such a fantastic and historic season for this club, last night was a return to "that's so Union" and a typical Philly sports team performance when there are high expectations involved. Disappointing given that this was their window to win big things in. The future is uncertain as things stand right now. I also want to use this as a time to point out that it is due to situations like this that MLS really should move to a two-leg format for all rounds of the payoffs, except for the final. If a team is given off for multiple weeks and comes out flat in the first leg, at least they would still have the second leg to make amends. The same could probably be said for TFC. I have not been in favor of these one-off playoff matches--even when my club couldn't even sniff the playoffs.
Losing in the first round sucks but we have had a lot of positives this year. I realize where the supporters shield sits in the hierarchy of trophies but its a lot higher than the marbles or spoons or whatever preseason bullshit we have won in the past. We have CCL spot. We have developed players other teams want to actually buy from from us. I just pretend the franchise is only 5 years old because that's when they only really started trying and then I feel better.
Feel like if Montiero had hit that sitter early on the whole game would have changed. I also hope that with the incoming money Tanner is able to get a game changer but not sure if I want one potentially great player with all the money or 3-4 potentially really good players to support the kids. Think I'll go back and watch the TFC game on DVR so I can feel happy before Thanksgiving.
