Telemundo is on their knees praying for this. Although Spain -Brazil would not be bad for Ratings either.
Mexico to play well congratulations! Japan won today against an ultra defensive team that's why we had difficulty. I can't wait for Japan to play against Mexico again ^^
I enjoyed the games today very much. I expect Japan to pass Spain and Brazil to eliminate Mexico. For the final, my heart would say Japan but my head Brazil.
Spain are not untouchable. Côte d'Ivoire were very close to beat them. They shot themselves into the foot by conceding two stupid goals. Rafa Mir was very clinical in extra time. He's a physical strong and tall forward. He reminds me Diego Costa. Maybe he can be the solution for Spain's goalscoring issues.
It was rigged for the hosts. Imo highly unlikely that a team outside of UEFA and CONMEBOL makes the semi-finals in Qatar.
I do not believe it was rigged. But I will play your game... ...Who's to say Qatar will not rig this crazy cup?????
Well, Japan is going to play Mexico alright... ...for the bronze. Spain-Brazil for the Gold in what should be a pretty good match.
Once the group stage was over I expected a Brazil-Spain final. It was very close but here we are. I pick Spain to take the gold. Mexico will take the bronze.
Mexico beat Japan 3-1 and wins its second ever Olympic medal in football. One gold and one bronze for FEMEXFUT in the last nine years. Whatever misgivings about the senior team, youth Mexico is near always quality.
Just out of curiosity, how strong is Mexico’s Olympic squad in relation to its national pool? Was this their full-strength team (in accordance to tournament age rules)? In other words, did they take their best U-24 talents, or were a lot of players barred from playing by their clubs? Were there some that would have been in Tokyo but prioritized playing Gold Cup instead? Lately Mexico has been putting a decent showing in the Olympics, as you mentioned, so I’m just trying to assess if it’s simply a matter of them taking the tournament more seriously than the other nations. Not to discredit them, but I just don’t know if they’d do as good if everybody took the best they had.
Never underestimate Mexico. They won Gold when everyone brought their best... Their program is elite at these levels.
Mexico’s youth football programs and Olympic results on an international stages since 2005: 2 U17 World Cups 2 U17 runner ups 1 U20 semifinals (3rd place) 1 Olympic Gold: vs Neymars Brazil (Hulk, Marcelo, Oscar etc…) 1 Olympic Bronze: (last 2 teams: it’s Brazil and a squad that made it to the euro 2020 semifinals - respectively) There is no denying that Mexico has great/elite youth programs.
That’s nice and all, but that didn’t really answer my question. It wasn’t to dismerit Mexico’s Olympic work, I just wanted to know if this was their best U-24 side or if players were denied from participating.
I don’t have a point, because I ultimately don’t even know if these are Mexico’s best U-24 players. I am not familiar with their national pool, so for all I know this could be their C or D U-24 squad in terms of talent if their clubs denied players. This would give more credit to Mexico’s achievement, so it’s not a bad thing. Like I said in the other post, there might have been players eligible for Tokyo that preferred to play Gold Cup instead. I simply do not know, that’s why I’m trying to figure out if these were their best or not. No need to get defensive over a question regarding their squad
Mexico took part time footballers. A mix of players who are firefighters, police officers, nurses who play on Wednesday night recreational leagues. Their first division players weren’t let go.
