Costa Rica and Panama to host FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2020 https://fifa.to/pHyef0QMz2 Details of the allocation slots haven't been determined yet.
Luckily enough the CONCACAF qualification tournament has not taken place yet. Wonder if the top 2 only will qualify or if they will wait to see if Costa Rica and or Panama can qualify on the pitch ?
Costa Rica & Panama have qualified for the CONCACAF U-20 tournament. I wonder how this changes it and if they still participate. On another note, I wonder how badly Nigeria screwed up their visit to get denied hosting the tournament.
I think it is simply a safety issue for Nigeria. I had a look at French and English embassies website over there and you can see how complex the situation is there.
The only change on the allocations would be if FIFA forces one of Costa Rica or Panama to actually qualify. Otherwise: Hosts(2): Costa Rica & Panama UEFA(4): Spain, Germany, France, Netherlands AFC(3): North Korea, South Korea, Japan OFC(1): New Zealand CONCACAF: 2 CONMEBOL: 2 CAF: 2
According to the latest wikipedia update, Costa Rica and Panama have a secured ticket. Concacaf will have 2 more additional places (surely USA and one of Mexico or Canada).https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_FIFA_U-20_Women's_World_Cup
I wouldn't lock in the USA. They performed poorly in 2018, failing to reach the knockout round. With only two spots, Canada and Mexico can both qualify.
Mexico have been preparing very well. They have had training camp in every FIFA window for nearly a year and played friendlies.
I guess USA will anyway qualify, but what reaction would you expect, shouldn't they make it? "The sky is falling" or "As World Champions, we anyway didn't care much about Olympics"?
Wrong thread. This is the one for the U20 WWC. But "the sky is falling" either way. If the US fails to qualify for the Olympics, there would definitely be an uproar, and Andonovski might find out more about the pressure of expectations of being the USWNT head coach (I don't know how likely it would be for him to lose his job, but it would be possible). And if the U20 WNT fail to qualify for the WWC, then a similar reaction on a smaller scale, since there's already lots of criticism on both the male and female sides with the youth system (USSF requiring coaches to move to Chicago, youth teams underperforming, the whole DA system, etc.).
Whoops. Not paying enough attention to what I post and where, during this Christmas' holydays. Thank you for the pertinent answer anyway.
I just read a tweet from Anthony DiCicco. Nearly all the US YNT team jobs are vacant for boys and girls. It is bizzare.
Concacaf provisional rosters released. Note Costa Rica and Panama do not take part in the qualifiers. It confirms both qualify as hosts as below
So, two World Cup places will be decided now in the Dominican Republic - this tournament has greatly expanded, from 8 teams to 20. Let the games begin! Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/concacaf-womens-u-20-championship.2103351/
This qualification process is crazy and long. So much football played in so little time. it is nearly as much a fitness competition as a football competition.
We are nearly there now. Hosts(2): Costa Rica & Panama UEFA(4): Spain, Germany, France, Netherlands AFC(3): North Korea, South Korea, Japan OFC(1): New Zealand CONCACAF: USA, Mexico CONMEBOL: 2 CAF: 2
FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica/Panama 2020™: 20 January – 6 February 2021 (tournament to keep original eligibility criteria: players born on or after 1 January 2000 and on or before 31 December 2004);
Some news about this World Cup: Panama want to reschedule the U20 Women World Cup because they cannot guarantee health conditions due to coronavirus: Panama requested a date change, since the Ministry of Health indicated that they cannot guarantee the execution of the project planning in the aspect of public health and infrastructure planned for the U20 Women's World Cup for the date of January / February2021. (In Panama we have around 15.000 cases of Covid-19) https://www.tvmax-9.com/somoslasele/Panama-solicita-Mundial-Femenino-Sub-20_0_5588441119.html Another controversy indicates that Costa Rica does not support Panama in giving change of dates and Fifa would be willing to do the World Cup only in Costa Rica, or shared in Costa Rica with another venue. https://www.crhoy.com/deportes/las-...ub-20-ticas-listas-e-incertidumbre-en-panama/ The note described above is from a Costa Rican newspaper that only argues that Panama cannot organize the World Cup because "they are not going to be prepared" when the reality is that it is because they cannot guarantee ideal health conditions for January and February
This u20 women's world cup from the beginning has been a conflict between both countries. The original idea was for both countries to have two venues: National Stadium and Saprissa in San José Costa Rica and Rommel Fernandez (Panama city) and the other to choose between Maracana (Panama City) or the new stadium in Penonomé. However, Costa Rica proposed a third venue to FIFA: Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium in Alajuela, which was accepted. Leaving Panama with only one venue: Rommel Fernandez in the capital City. Here is an updated article on the situation dated May 29, 2020. It is indicated here that apart from health reasons, it is not believed that the renovation of the Rommel Fernandez stadium or the 4 training fields are ready for the beginning of next year. In general there is little optimism about hosting the U-20 Women World Cup. https://www.prensa.com/impresa/deportes/la-ilusion-pende-de-un-hilo/ Panama has had one of the strictest quarantines in the region, with most economic activities ceasing. This undoubtedly influenced the delay in preparing the works in the stadium and in adapting the logistics: training fields, etc.
...Fifa should just have Costa Rica host the tournament, if it can handle it. Panama doesn't sound ready in any way, and is acknowledging as much.
U-17 WWC 2014, held in Costa Rica, was a big success: i guess they showed that they have adequate infrastructure and organization to hold a big event alone, if needed.
