the host will be announced tomorrow. India & South Korea were apparently bidding to host the tournament.
Did they not announce the host today? India was awarded the U-17 WWC, so it should be South Korea, unless they withdrew their bid. If no one bid for this tournament I wonder what FIFA will do?
If they give it to South Korea, it means they won't have it in 2022 and that would mean no senior wc in 2023 for South Korea.
Australia and Japan are the two front-runners for the 2023 WWC. South Korea should focus on hosting the 2020 U-20 WWC instead.
FIFA Council decides on key steps for upcoming international tournaments. https://fifa.to/QmRtyiwk5U There was no host for the U-20 WWC announced today. I'm guessing no one bid for it.
Not many countries (northern hemisphere) will be thrilled on the idea to host U20WWC in the same summer when Olympic Games are running. Perhaps then South Africa, South America or Oceania would be better idea in Nov-Dec?
I keep thinking South Africa for 2020 U-20 is ideal. Australia or Japan gets the 2022 U-20 WWC along with the 2023 WWC. The 2022 U-17 WWC goes Euro.
Curious if they'll be forced to ask someone to host it. Depending on time frame, the selected host will have roughly a year to prep everything.
The FIFA person said in one of the previous edition the hosts had barely six months to prepare it and still managed it.
UEFA qualifiers start today, they still don't know how many teams will be allocated for the tournament. History suggest four but UEFA has lined-up a play-off for the fifth place just in case it is needed.
CONCACAF announced their qualifiers recently, too. Only CAF & CONMEBOL remain to announce. Hopefully, a host is decided shortly.
Interesting. In all the nine previous U20 World Cups, there have been no Nordic semi-finalists. Sweden and Norway have qualified only twice each with a QF as best. Finland also twice, but eliminated in the first round. Denmark only once, QF in the inaugural tournament. In the upcoming U19 Euros next week, which serves as qualifying tournament for the U20 World Cup 2020, only Norway will have the chance to qualify from the Nordic region. Time to break some new ground. I've seen on some Instagram accounts that the Norwegian girls hope to qualify for the India World Cup 2020. May be they know more than us.
Still doubtful. And would they want both? FIFA is probably accepting bids now and will decide by the end of the year. I mean, when South Africa withdrew from hosting the 2016 U-20 WWC, Papua New Guinea ended up hosting, so there's ample time to find another host.
The tournament is basically Nigeria's. As long as they pass all the FIFA requirements. Nigeria hosted the men's U-20 WC in 1999 & the men's U-17 WC in 2009.
To me the only worry with Nigeria is security. Saying that nothing happened in PNG 2016... but security was high and players were not allowed to go out on their own the whole tourney.
That was the French set-up. Maybe other countries had a less strict one. But they did some sightseeing with added security.
