FIU hires Jonathan Garber from Franklin Pierce. Thanks PoptartKing for making that call earlier. https://fiusports.com/news/2021/1/25/jonathan-garbar-named-fiu-womens-soccer-head-coach.aspx Happy to see this type of hire. He did really well at JC level with Monroe College before doing some very good work in his 4 years at the D2 level with Franklin Pierce. Gets his first opportunity at the D1 level now. That FIU program has far underperformed for years and interested to see where he takes them.
Army coming down to Delaware assistant and former Fordham associate head coach who now coaches club. Thought they would have gone for a good experienced head coach from lower level mid major like the NEC or MAAC. Only interviewed females. Will be a ho hum hire that other Patriot League coaches will be happy about, namely Navy.
Yeah......Fordham have never had an associate head coach.....unless you mean Delaware's associate head coach???
SuperSoccer you can use Google and go all the way back to 2019: https://fordhamsports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/coaches/shannon-neely-noel/2432. She is with Long Island SC now
Here’s a link: https://www.google.com/amp/s/gators...eigh-florida-gators-soccer-coach-retires/amp/ Only 53.
But she has coached the team since the program's founding 26 years ago. Florida has struggled the last few years, to be sure, but Burleigh is a very well-respected coach and, from what I've seen and observed, a classy person.
WVU assistants are nervous about doing their own thing since they ride the successes of the current program that are mostly driven by the head coach. I don’t see either of them leaving and being successful. Sad day for Florida soccer as a great coach and even better person retires.
Here is a length of service list for coaches at the same school. Some pretty good company. Fotopoulos is the only one I could think of. 3 biggest names I've heard. KA at USC- Coached in the SEC, won a National Championship. Would have to be tops on any coaching search if he was interested. CH at Ark- Won the SEC 2X, SEC COY at arguably one of the toughest jobs in the SEC. Florida connections as he was at UCF for a longtime. EB at TCU- Won the Big 12. Florida connections as was at FSU for a longtime. UCF and USF coaches would make sense. Although the UCF coach hasn't exactly done that well. Would a top female be interested? Wisconsin, WVU, USC (God I hope not.) Would Cromwell at UCLA be interested in going back to Florida? If UF hires a young unproven anyone, it will show how much soccer means to them. It is one of the best jobs in the country. They could and should get a proven winner.
She would be worth a call. She has done a very nice job at Brown. Her entire coaching and playing career is in the northeast. She has finished 2nd, 4th, 6th and 1st in the IVY. She has very little P5 experience. She would be an intriguing hire.
That was the first name I thought of. I met her during my daughter's recruiting process. We just popped in to look at the school and happened to run into her. She took time out of her day to talk to us. Very gracious. One thing I will always remember. She took a good look at my daughter, who is a little on the smaller side and said, "you look pretty strong".
Wouldn't Vic Campbell be considered the front runner? He's been there at Florida since 1995 and has been associate head coach since 2003. Seems like when any coach announces his/her retirement before the season is actually there that typically a plan is in place already for succession. Who knows. He's actually 6 years older than Burleigh. If he does get it would be a very strong diversity hire which is so sorely needed in this game. He is of Korean descent and I think Nevada is the only D1 women's soccer program that has an Asian coach currently. Names like McNeill, McAlpine, and Bell would also be great diversity hires and they have all done tremendously.
Agreed, let's make sure we let Anson Dorrance, Mark Krikorian, and Paul Ratcliffe know that their applications will not be reviewed at this time.
The program has struggled lately. Why would they elevate an assistant who has been apart of that? When is the last time Florida was a national power, consistent with their university/athletic national profile?
Kirkup is right there too. They've basically had 3 head coaches working that program but its a funny situation. If they wanted to go for the next BB and go with a younger female, that would make sense. So would giving it to either of these "Associate" head coaches and so would selecting a proven head coach moving up the ranks in D1. I do not have a vote, but I would not vote for Fotop. She's been at Eckerd for about 10 years and had 1 winning record and never finished in the top 3 in a d2 conference. It's funny how they try to polish her bio on the website. I'd bet she's happy raising her kids right there but we've all be surprised before! It is a great job where someone can contend in the SEC very consistently very soon.
I know Vic a little bit and he should absolutely be given the position. A couple of his coaching buddies have told me (mutual friends I suppose) that he has been “strongly encouraged” to apply for the job. Becky has gone to bat for him. I would be surprised if Vic wasn’t given the role.
