Of course one has to keep in mind that Tigres didn't bring the first squad to the second leg that year. Tigres coach Tuca Ferretti didn't prioritize the CCL for many years and now can't win one when he does try. It's a good draw for the Sounders but Saprissa, depending on their form, could be dangerous for both Montreal and Seattle.
Really it's more beIN. ESPN+ will have a nice setup carved out when it adds the Bundesliga of course, but it should look into adding the Libertadores or the Brazilian league or something in that vein. Perhaps the China Super League, make it a "sun never sets on soccer" kind of deal. And yeah, someone better than Yahoo needs to grab the CCL. These are legitimately compelling games, it's not like they have to invent hype out of whole cloth.
Which I have, and do enjoy. But there is no Argentine Primera which is a terrific league to follow and there is no Copa Sudamericana or Copa Libertadores action. All this FSW used to regularly have on display. I recall watching D.C. United vs. Univ. Catolica in the 2005 Copa Sudamericana for example. Now it is all yahoo.com streaming for MLS regional play.
FSW was awesome, such a random assortment of stuff. I'm sure I'm not the only one for whom that channel was very influential in getting turned on to soccer in the first place.
Counting my chickens here but I wonder what sort of attendance NYCFC vs. Tigres would attract at Giants Stadium.
Well FSC was the reason I still hear random dial tones in my sleep nowadays. One of my favorite early MLS quirks was back when the league just put all the non-ESPN broadcasts on MLSnet dot com for free to stream at 350k. Every once in a while, if you just never closed the window to the FSC stream you could keep watching FSC for a day or two and get the Sunday Premier League games.

And now for something completely different: an MLS team declaring the CCL a priority before they even get there Win. Win. Win.The goals are clear to Diego Alonso.#InterMiamiCF pic.twitter.com/y8LyUcKiIa— Inter Miami CF (@InterMiamiCF) January 20, 2020 Personally still haven't figured out my allegiances here in Florida (born and raised in Gainesville, living in Broward - I'm essentially a free agent ), but it's a personal goal of mine to be there the first time a Champions League game is played in my home state.
Mind you (and for once, I didn't bother our regional expert @EvanJ and did the research myself ), it wouldn't be the first time a team from Florida played continental ball: apparently the St. Petersburg Kickers got dropped by América in 1990. Couldn't find any footage, so you'll just have to make do with the 1989 US Open Cup title that presumably qualified them: Back to the current edition: even as a fan of int'l soccer tournaments in general, seeing them as intrinsically valuable, and even though the numbers below don't take the travel grants that Concacaf gives each away team into account, they're still pretty damning. No other confederation pays as small a percentage of its income to prize money as CONCACAF: pic.twitter.com/iRIIAUWBjb— Christopher Gerstle | 🇺🇸 | 🇩🇪 🇪🇺 | 🇺🇦 (@CGerstle) January 21, 2020
No Florida team was involved, but in the 2002 CCC the San Jose Earthquakes played Olimpia at the Orange Bowl for some reason. It was Olimpia's home leg.
It sure feels to me like the time is right and the interests are aligned to really push the CCL. And this ought to be an area in which the total crookedness of the three big players here (USSF, FMF, and CONCACAF) works to the advantage of the competition. Plenty of slush to go around if they can do it right. On the US side, for god's sake SUM, serve some purpose and roll MLS, USOC and CCL into a single TV deal.
With all this Liga MX - MLS transfer galore, I think we are heading towards the best CCL thread in thistory of BigSoccer.
Also not CCL but on December 5th, 1998, the second leg of the Copa Interamericana was played at Lockhart as Vasco da Gama's "home" game. DC United, as 1998 CCC champs, won 2-0 to win the cup 2-1 on aggregate.
Here are the sources https://www.reddit.com/r/MLS/comments/eicved/top_continental_tournament_prize_pools_as_a/ According to concacaf they spend 69 million in all competitions. I do not see a breakdown on what revenues are from the CCL to compare to the prize money (plus other subsidies) vs the CCL revenues. It looks like they took the total revenue of Concacaf and divided the prize money of the CCL from it. http://congress.concacaf.com/34/en/122-1 The UEFA numbers are divided between competitions, but behind a paywall. https://www.statista.com/statistics/279067/uefa-champions-league-revenue/ This one does say that the 3 million in revenues are from the Champions and Europa league revenues, so it seems that they separate National team competitions from Club competitions. https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=2616268.html So it is not apples to apples. In Europe Club competition makes a lot more money than the National competitions. In other Federations, specially Concacaf, it is the reverse, The Gold Cup is what makes Concacaf their money, the CCL does not.
