Away to Luton Town, one of the best badges in all of football, on Wednesday then off to Reading on Saturday.
one of the best grounds in all of football. I don't know how much time Kenilworth Road has left, but when it's gone - and at some point before too long, it will be - something unique will be lost. just entering the (away) Oak Stand is an experience like no other. you buy your ticket and enter through a standard set of row houses … … and you emerge into what are essentially the backyards of those houses, climbing stairs that allow you to enter through the rear of the stand. so as you climb the stairs, you're literally looking down on these yards - with clothes lines, and trash bins, and whatever you'd expect to see in working class 'gardens' (including dogs barking their heads off) - and then you enter into the back of the stand … it's surreal. they don't make 'em like that anymore. and of course, with one exception, they never did.
Apparently Monk's come out and said that the playoffs were never a realistic ambition for this season, and that it's a long term project, etc., etc. Some meltdowns amongst the Wednesday faithful. Seeing as Chansiri said automatic promotion was what they'd be shooting for when Monk was brought on, it's kind of tough to see him buying into such diminished expectations. No doubt he's right that this isn't a promotion squad, but saying so is not sitting well with more than a few at Hillsborough. Interesting times ahead.
as an american, it's indefensible to have a manager/head coach with a defeatist attitude. i'd imagine the english have a similar view about that. not expecting to finish top of the league may be realistic, but it's not something you entertain with anyone until the math already checks out.
it is a little bit different elsewhere. I remember being scolded by my mother (not exactly the most competitive lady you'll ever meet) at a very young age for acknowledging the possibility of defeat before one of my baseball games. after that, I was in my thirties before I ever played a game expecting anything but to win - no matter how outclassed we were. it really is an American* thing. *and a good one, to my mind.
Thread over at owlstalk calling for Warnock to be brought in... that's a no for me dawg... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Warnock
It's a non-starter, surely? At least I presume so. I do like him, though, despite his being the pantomime villain for Wednesday. I can't imagine any Owls fans calling for him, though, however well-suited he might otherwise be.
I'm quoting myself to add that the Fifth Round (Round of 16) will be Monday March 2 to Thursday March 5. You will host Man City on March 4, which will be 3 days after they play Aston Villa for the Carabao Cup.
drove over to North Manchester to watch this one at the Main View Inn, which is run by a Wednesdayite who shows all their matches on the big screen. good guys. a decent pint. shit football.
You trailed 1-0 and 2-1, went up 3-2, and Scott Hogan equalized in the 90+1st minute. It ended 3-3, and the statistics were close. The clubs remain with the same record, albeit your goal differential is 10 better. You're 12th, Derby (with 1 fewer win and 3 more draws) is 13th, and Birmingham is 14th. You have 12 games left. You're 11 points behind the last playoff spot and 11 point ahead of the top club in the relegation zone.
FF had a Bobby Orr like hat trick: 1 goal 1 assist 1 yellow(For Bobby O it would mean he got in a fight)
