Rosters so far: https://canpl.ca/article/cpl-pre-season-roster-tracker-how-each-team-is-shaping-up Interesting to see the range in approach to stocking the teams for 2020 (or, more likely I think, for 2021). At one end, Hamilton has re-signed 17 players. At the other end, Winnipeg looks like they will be almost an entirely new team.
I'm even more excited by the league, it will be a stronger league than 2019 with a different feel. I like going young for internationals from great academies. The partnership with 21st Club was a good idea. What do you think of the player's union?
I expect the on field performance will be better than last year. Most teams have a core of players who know each other which is worth more than most people think. The new players they are bringing in are, presumably, upgrades (or else whey bring them in?). I'm not really one way or the other on it. For the players, it seems to be the way of things in pro sports so perhaps better to get it started early. For the league, while presumably introducing some restrictions , it does give them someone to talk to when making decisions that affect players directly. I guess I see it as more of a discussion organization than anything else at this point. According to this: https://northernstartingeleven.com/opinion-cpl-players-union/ the salary cap is $750 000 and the average player salary is $30 000. I assume both the players and the league view that as low and probably both want to see it increase as circumstances allow. I suspect the owners, even pre-covid, were still focused on financial viability and stability, not trying to suppress player wages. I suspect the players are wise enough not to cause labour problems when the league legitimately can't afford to pay them more. But maybe useful for non-monetary items.
