Nick79, Q*bert doesn't have it quite right. Basically each club decides to be professional or not but if you do pay players [above travel expenses, etc.] then you can not have college players [they lose their college eligibility per NCAA].

For teams like Miami, Cosmos, and Jacksonville; financial loses are a given. There may be current NPSL clubs that pay players, IDK, but if they do it's more in line with their finances. Basically, each club is independent and operates of it's own sweet will [props to Philip Levine].

Has there ever been a fully professional NPSL team, besides the Cosmos?

this move was a bit of a head-scratcher until I read about Harvard Medical School.

    http://www.bostoncityfc.com/news/former-vitesse-arnhem-and-international-keeper-joins-the-lions/

Boston City FC has signed former Dutch Under 20 national team goalkeeper Wouter Dronkers, who spent the past three seasons with Vitesse Arnhem of the Eredivisie, the top professional league in the Netherlands.

Dronkers has also played with FC Twente, where he was part of the club’s UEFA Europa League squad, while the club was managed by former England boss Steve McClaren, who guided Twente to the Dutch title and won the Johan Cruyff Shield, also known as the Dutch Super Cup.

Dronkers has represented the Dutch national team level at every age group from Under 15s to Under 20s

Because we are talking a low revenue league which helps college players keep fit and retain their scholarships, I wonder if some of the teams are pay-to-play. It would make sense as most teams can't cover travel costs from attendance & sponsorships. I noticed that the Boston Breakers College Academy team in the WPSL mentioned something about "have checks ready" on one of their registration pages (not a tryout fee).

Derby City Rovers Back Out Of Scheduled Friendly.

Derby City Rovers (USL/PDL) unexpectedly cancelled last minute the much anticipated friendly at the Legacy Sports Club Arena in Lafayette, Indiana against FC Indiana (NPSL).

The news was announced this morning by Derby City Rovers President/technical director Nathan Pitcock, but no reason or explanation was given, according to Lions’ media.

However, it was noted and it appeared that the 3:00pm kick off that was agreed to back in March was being pushed back to 6:00pm to accommodate Derby City Rovers.

'FC Indiana vs. Derby City Rovers ticket holders are advised to retain their tickets which will be refunded at the full price of purchase,' FC Indiana representative said in the statement. 'I hope you can forgive this inconvenience and not let it stop you from attending future home games. In fact we would like to offer all season and match day ticket holder one free admission for an upcoming home match.'

Rooney’s professional career began with the Long Island Rough Riders in 1994, where he remained until 1997 when he joined the NY MetroStars of MLS. From there the central midfielder joined former MLS club Miami Fusion where he made 67 appearances and scored 12 goals. Rooney finished his career with stints with the New England Revolution and a return to the Rough Riders.

I'm confused about NPSL scheduling. Some divisions started play in March but others aren't starting until June. How does that make any sense?

out West they always start their season earlier than the rest of the conferences...my guess is that they might have less need for college players.
