With the way our contracts are and the amount of GAM/TAM we have tied up in guys there wasn't really cap/budget space to "save our season" with a single midseason signing.
Considering the level of play in the Portuguese top division outside Sporting, Porto, and Benfica (And Braga to a lesser extent) that’s not that big a stretch, especially when he played for a team that relegated. Maybe he’ll surprise but I don’t have my hopes up.
Rumor of a Honduran winger as well. I joked elsewhere, but maybe we can trade Croizet for an international slot! Two birds, one stone.
Can we just get him really drunk so he passes out and then when he wakes up everyone just pretends its still 2018?
wow. can't believe we didn't have to give them the $75k to take him off our hands. as awful as he's been, getting anything for him is a steal.
Good start. Now all Peter has to fix are: Fontas, Croizet, Wallace, Nemeth and BF. Or basically almost every player acquisition since 2018, minus Russell, Gutierrez and maybe Barath. Oh, and the contracts he extended in 2018. Fix those too. And while your at it Peter, bring back Opara. Other than those minor issues, great job managung the roster.
Well the "good" news is that 3 of those first 5 will hopefully not be here next year (Wallace definitely, Nemeth probably, Feilhaber, possibly).
Bummer, I was really hoping we could reclamate Rowe. But I'm also glad we recognized it just wasn't gonna happen and were able to call it what it was sooner rather than later.
All valid criticisms, but I think there is something to be said about being left in the dust by the rest of MLS, too. Because I absolutely think that players like Croizet or Nemeth or even an aging Feilhaber would have been game-changers just five to eight years ago. It's not just that we can't keep up with 8-figure star signings, we're getting passed in positions 4 to 8 as well, which is exactly who we relied on for our advantage for the better part of the last decade. PV is great at making budget moves and putting together a solid team from top to bottom... up until the big hitters just start outclassing us there too.
Very true. Funny note... LAFC finally just signed their third DP. So it's not even about major splashes as just smart acquisitions and spending in the right places. And the funny thing is, we're spending more than they are at the 4-8 positions. Just not nearly as cannily.
Moneyball is great and all of that, but in the Beane era Oakland was 0-1 in the ALCS, 1-6 in the ALDS, and 0-1 in the AL Wild Card, and out of the playoffs in 11 of 19 seasons. Six division crows, zero pennants, no World Series appearances.
