The extra opponents are San Francisco and Jacksonville in the Spring. The Eleven will play an extra game against Edmonton and North Carolina in the Fall. All of the other teams are twice in the Spring and twice in the Fall. The odd thing to me is all the back-to-backs. Indy plays the same opponent in back-to-back games four times this year.
16 game first half, 16 game 2nd half, and the shortest time between matches is only 3 days. Well, thats pretty good (for American minor league soccer). Could be a lot worse.
The difference, for me, is that those leagues have 30 teams each, NBA has an 80+ game schedule, and MLB has a 180+ game schedule. Games daily or at least every couple of days. Their scheduling is far more complex than what is involved for an 8 team league.
I just don't see any reason for the NASL to do this. It's not like it reduces travel since the games are home-and-away and usually separated by a week. When we had an AHL team here in Houston we used to get these kinds of things where you would play the same team a couple of times in a row but those would all be home or away games on a weekend. The most common was when teams from the Northeast or Midwest would make a Texas swing and play Houston-San Antonio-Austin once or twice over the course of a week. That did reduce travel. Am I missing some reason why the NASL would do this? A friend last night joked that the league put the teams in a random scheduling computer program and this is what came out. When they saw all the back-to-backs the league wanted to redo it but that would have meant actually paying for the freeware.
The reason they would do this is because there are only 8 teams in a 32 game schedule where some of the teams do not have 100% control over what dates their stadium is available. I really don't understand what the big deal is? It isn't like this affects the level of play on the field in any way.
For a league that was seemingly in danger of folding just a couple of months ago, public perception needs to be one of their highest priorities this year. Looking at a schedule where the Week 2 games are exactly the same as Week 3 with the exception of switched locations, gives the impression mentioned above by newtex. It just doesn't give the impression of professionalism (perceived or not), which is something that the league is going to have to combat this year from a lot of different angles (fans, sponsors, tv, etc.) and one of the first things they produce after not folding is a schedule that raises more jokes than confidence. That's why I take issue with the back-to-back games.
Only 8 teams mean that you play the same opponents quite a few times but that doesn't mean those games have to be back-to-back. When it happens this much it sure seems like it is intentional and I can't come up with a reason why.
I looked at all the teams' schedules just to see if Indy was an outlier. Here are the number of back-to-backs against the same team. They are all over the place so maybe this is just a fluke but it still seems odd. There definitely are a lot of these games. Miami - 7 Edmonton - 6 Indy - 5 San Francisco - 4 NY Cosmos - 3 North Carolina - 3 Puerto Rio - 2 Jacksonville - 1 NOTE: I did not count the North Carolina-Puerto Rico games on July 15 and 29 since the mid-season break is in between them. That is also the only pair where one team hosts both of them.
I think it generally makes the schedule less representative. It means that a team is mostly playing against the same teams at a particular time of the year. Teams change over the year but you are not getting to face them as they change. Personally, I think it is less interesting. The Eleven will play San Francisco and Puerto Rico each twice (and have a bye) in the first five weeks of the year. It will be April 29 before they face any other team. Then in May the Eleven will only play against Edmonton (2 games) and Miami (2 games). At the end of the Spring season Indy will have two games against the Cosmos and then one against Jacksonville in the last three three. There is a break and then Indy plays Edmonton twice to start off the Fall. You don't have a problem with this?
The Open Cup schedule and format are out. https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...-2017-lamar-hunt-us-open-cup-format-announced Indy will start play on May 17 in the 2nd round and play the winner of a nearby pairing of amateur teams from the first round.
