Joe Girardi Will Not Return As Yankees Manager - ESPN http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/21166583/joe-girardi-not-returning-manager-new-york-yankees
Yankees Managers (most wins) Joe McCarthy: 1,460-867 (.627) Joe Torre: 1,152-752 (.605) Casey Stengel: 1,149-696 (.623) Miller Huggins: 1,067-719 (.597) Ralph Houk: 944-806 (.539) Joe Girardi: 910-710 (.562) Billy Martin: 556-385 (.591)
There is a lot to this and so much of it is behind-the-scenes. I want to say that I was disappointed when news of Joe's departure came out the other day. I liked Joe and respected him. Many Yankees fans did not. But I believe he got more out of the recent Yankee clubs than we had a right to expect. The Yankees never collapsed in any of the last few seasons when they easily could have given up and thrown in the towel. In a phrase: they never "turned into the Mets." Even though the Yankees had failed to reach the post-season three of the past five years, they always ended with a winning record and did not disgrace themselves. They remained competitive. Even after dealing away a bunch of stars at the trade deadline last year. Having said that, I didn't have to live day-to-day with Joe Girardi and his personality like the players and Yankee management did. Apparently, he ended up wearing out his welcome with both. This seems to be similar to what occurred with Buck Showalter. Both guys are strong, driven men. The Yankees felt they needed relief from Buck back in the mid-90s and got it with the hiring of Joe Torre, temperamentally far different. And Buck, like Girardi, was also removed after a playoff run ending in a hard-fought series loss (to the Mariners in 1995). The change worked then. Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner hope it can work again. It seems they would prefer all the kids on the Yankees roster -- the so-called Baby Bombers -- to mature under a less intense and stressful managerial approach. I'm not saying Cashman and Steinbrenner are right, nor advocating that Joe should have definitely been retained. Just that there has been much boiling under the surface within the Yankees for quite a while. With Girardi's current contract ending October 31, a move one way or the other had to be made now. It was either get rid of Joe or sign him to a new deal, which would have meant keeping him around for another three or four or five years. A couple of articles about the "trouble" with Joe... Aaron Boone Will Be Named Yankees Manager - N.Y. Post https://nypost.com/2017/12/01/aaron-boone-named-yankees-manager/ Aaron Boone, the popular former player and ESPN color commentator, has agreed to be the next Yankees manager. He will succeed Joe Girardi despite having no experience in uniform since his 2010 retirement. He has spent the past eight seasons in a broadcast booth. Boone, 44, overcame the odds to win this job by virtue of a strong interview in which he apparently showcased the “connectivity” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman thought Girardi lacked. Boone was highly regarded as a teammate for his people skills, and he stayed plugged into the game through his job. He served as a media go-to guy during his playing days, though that dynamic will be challenged with his new role. Cashman notified Boone on Thursday of his intention to recommend him to Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner. On Friday, Cashman and Boone’s agent Adam Katz hammered out a contract. The team likely will introduce Boone formally next week at a Yankee Stadium news conference. Boone has been best known in baseball for his brief stint — about three months — with the 2003 Yankees, during which time he hit the walk-off home run against Boston’s Tim Wakefield in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series that sent that team to the World Series. That winter, Boone suffered a major left knee injury that cost him the entire 2004 season and led to the Yankees acquiring Alex Rodriguez to replace him at third base. Among the other five men to interview were recently retired player Carlos Beltran, Giants bench coach Hensley Meulens, former Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson, former Indians and Mariners manager Eric Wedge, and Dodgers third-base coach Chris Woodward. Thomson, a Yankees employee from 1990 through 2017, will leave the organization altogether, as he accepted the Phillies’ offer to be their bench coach. Cashman wouldn’t estimate how many people the Yankees initially considered on the list that narrowed to six actual interviews. The Athletics turned down their request to speak with manager Bob Melvin about the opening, and former Yankees outfielder Raul Ibanez, after receiving an inquiry from the organization about his interest, decided he wasn’t yet ready to manage.
