It's getting late very early this season. I know, I know... there will be growing pains with the kids but the future will be bright and beautiful. Let us pray. First, Greg Bird (1-for-16, .063) is sat down for the weekend with a bruised right ankle. Then, Gary Sanchez ends up on the 10-day DL with a strained right biceps injury he got taking a swing in the 5th inning yesterday. Sanchez had been batting .150 (3-for-20) with one homer. Joe Girardi hints that he will be out longer than ten days. Trivia Time: Matt Holliday was walked five times in Sunday's game. This tied an all-time Yankees' record. The last Yankee to walk five or more times without getting an intentional walk was a guy I've never heard of: Russ Derry, on Sept. 6, 1945, against the Detroit Tigers. He played outfield for the Yankees during the lean war years of 1944-45. He also was with the Philadelphia Athletics and, very briefly, the St. Louis Cardinals. He died in 2004. Russ Derry on Baseball Reference: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/derryru01.shtml He had a long career in the minors, playing with such teams as the International League's Newark Bears and Rochester Red Wings, where he holds club records for home runs in a season (42 in 1949) and a career (134 from 1947 to 1952). Michael Pineda continues with his strange Jekyll/Hyde performances. In yesterday's opener at Yankee Stadium, he was absolutely brilliant. Putting down the first 20 Rays batters, he ended up allowing 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 11 before being pulled in the 8th. Monday's victory was the 900th of Joe Girardi's career. 822 have been with the Yankees. Masahiro Tanaka being given an extra day's rest, so he will not be pitching Thursday's game. Instead, he'll go Friday against the Cardinals. Jordan Montgomery getting called up from Scranton to make his major league debut on Wednesday. Luis Severino will be pushed back to Thursday's start.
