Since we are getting close, we really need to decide what we are going with on this. Are we going to say the Union have 16 straight winless or 15 straight regular season winless right now? Based on MLS, they officially track regular season only in their media guide. Also, are we going with NYM/NYRB having the record of 19 winless or are we including shootout victories included as wins, making the record 18? Again, MLS has the "official" record at 18. This is important. It's really the only interesting thing the team had going on right now. I don't want to celebrate being a part of history a week too soon. PERSONALLY, I think we should go with the MLS standard of 15 current/18 record. But what do the rest of you think?
I think we'll beat Houston on a Wednesday night in front of about 3 people in the stands. Bringing our total to either 17 or 18 depending on whether you count the playoff loss. Thus either loosing the attempt at the record or tying it. It's the perfect Uniony outcome.
I agree go with our streak being at 15 and the record 18. Funny enough we play Colorado to break the record. Seems destined almost.
I vote for 15/19. I want our presumed record to stand up to all scrutiny and debate, so the standard should be defined in the most restrictive way possible. I don't want to be Roger Maris and have an asterisk after our name in the record books. There should be no question when I debate this with Red Bull fans 30 years from now that the Union had the longest streak ever, period. We all know how New York fans are about the records of their heroes. They tried to downplay Cal Ripken's streak when Lou Gehrig's record was under assault. They love to argue for the sake of arguing. I want to be able to have the last word on this, no matter how you slice it.
I count the playoff game.... the Union marked 2016 off as a successful season because they made the playoffs, they pumped up the 2017 season because we made the playoffs last year and were going to build off of it. If the team gives a one and done playoff appearance that clout than we should certainly be counting it. It was a competitive game against MLS competition. Hell, even if you count pre-season games against MLS competition we still haven't won. Only wins since August have been against the USMNT U-17s, the Tampa Bay Rowdies and a closed door scrimmage against Bethlehem. It's pathetic no matter how you slice it.... 15/16.. doesn't matter.
From an objective perspective, the Union have a very favorable May schedule: -5/6 Home vs. NY (Red Bulls play mid-week game in SKC, Union have no mid-week game) -5/13 At DCU (other than win at ATL last week, DC has been below average this season) -5/17 Home vs. Houston (Houston likely will rest players in a mid-week game) -5/20 Home vs. Colorado (Last place in West, more losses than the Union, COL play mid-week in CHI) -5/27 At RSL (More losses than the Union) The combined record of the next 5 opponents is 15-19-7 with 3 of the next 5 games at home with two very favorable match-ups (home games with the opponent traveling after playing away 3 or 4 days earlier). Come June 1, the Union should be in a much better position in the standings. If not, they will be contenders for the worst team in MLS history.
NYRB, DCU, Houston, Colorado, RSL ... each of those teams have better individual, respective records than the Union. In other words, the U's next five games are against better teams. I'd be willing to be that Marsch, Olsen, et al are looking at playing the Union as very favorable.
The only question we should be asking ourselves this year is whether or not we can top the DC United 2013 squad for abject failure.
You weren't specific enough with that request. Now they'll win the first two games against Rochester and Harrisburg before being downed by their first MLS opponent.
They wouldn't do this, but it would be absolute Twitter gold if the Union interns were to take just missing out on the all-time winless record and spin it into some sort of positive.
