With regard to Horne and Campbell - he was forced to hire the assistant (now HC) that he did by the AD. He was also required to elevate her to Assoc. HC. What also contributed to the situation was that the current HC was roommates/friends with the AD's daughter. He didn't create the situation. She was the other finalist for the job originally with Horne.......the AD and an unscrupulous AC created the situation. As far as the female hire (but not specific to Loyola), some female coaches do get hired with a minimal resume that is propelled by gender - end of story. Miami hiring committee was told "off the record" (legal issues and such of course) that they WILL hire a female. Whether you agree or disagree on this practice, it absolutely does happen. Of course male and female coaches on occasion also get hired simply because of who they know.....the world is unfair. In terms of female hires - yah yah -we get it, females should be coaching females, whatever. Bottom line is the social pendulum is going to swing the other way for a while (hiring less qualified females) and will eventually come to rest in a more logical place. And the disparity in % of male/female coaches is in some part due to the applicant pool - there aren't nearly the same number of female applicants as male.....once again for a variety of reasons. Simply citing the number of male/female coaches is not and automatic confirmation that females are somehow getting shorted in the process. And yes, someone will eventually post "start a new thread"....so I won't weigh in again, don't worry
True - and some of those reasons are not pretty: having your sexuality 'jokingly' questioned at a coaching license course, being ignored by refs before games because they're looking for the 'real' coach, being told by a another coach which of your players he thinks are hot, being called 'honey' or 'sweetie' by a ref or license instructor, being paid less than the men in your club who coach the same-level teams, having a parent tell you their child won't respect you because of your voice, plus a lot of darker stuff I'm sure you can imagine....shit gets old.
The candidate pool will be thinned with all males (ie. sexual harassers) being imprisoned in open air reeducation camps (like in Red Dawn) and prison ships anchored off Gitmo.
Data: In 2004 there were 201 male (67%) and 99 female (33%) coaches. Currently there are 231 male (72%) and and 90 female (28%) coaches, 2 m/f co-head coaches, and 12 positions left to fill. (The current ##s include the two new entrants to DI next year, 1 with a male and 1 with a female coach.)
Wouldn’t think so but they hired a club guy last time which was against the norm so anything can happen. Don’t think the applicant pool will be too big for a job in North Dakota.
Craig Roberts at Ball State may have been released; admin have been concerned about several recruiting violations and I believe they met with the coach this week. This comes from a very reliable source. Would be a shame if this happens as I think Craig has done a very good job there.
Tues should be interesting with all these job openings. Schools probably waiting until after the new Year to sign contracts. If not what are hey waiting on? Some jobs have been open for over a month
There have been instances of male Coaches totally over stepping their boundaries with female athletes which would be considered harrassment. Waldrum would be best not to hire his son at Pitt considering he had relations with a player while at Notre Dame. Not something you want to bring along to Pittsburgh.
pretty common knowledge. Below is a link to an article about it but if you are in college coaching this is known by a lot of coaches http://ncaasoccer.blogspot.com/2007/10/notre-dame-soccer-star-in-relationship.html?m=1
Publicly impugning a person's reputation on the flimsiest of hearsay is not ethical. So what is evidence does Cantcoach put forward to back up his rumor? A ten year old post on a private blog by a poster calling himself "blognasty". This singular post is apparently the only post by blognasty on his "NCAA Soccer Buzz" blog that he set up on blogspot. The internet has kept this post searchable and 18 months later a single response came in. It is hard to even imagine that this little nasty post is anything but unreliable. Talk about hearsay? Yes indeed, an anonymous individual calling himself blognasty invents an blog and posts a single entry claiming to have overheard a conversation of a group of unidentified college soccer players spreading rumors amongst themselves about a possible scandal. Whew! Ten years later this post is dug up and posted here on Big Soccer as evidence of truth. Such a post lowers the level of discourse by about a mile.... not that this this forum is famous for its fact checking to start with.
That blog was just a demonstration that this wasn’t pulled out of thin air. Makes no difference if you decide to believe it or not, this is pretty well known it’s not a huge secret.
This still comes up every so often when people talk about inappropriate relationships with athletes. Apparently the admin got wind of this going on and Randy dealt with it internally. When Anson had his settlement a few years back the Waldrum son thing was gossiped about here and there at recruiting events. Whatever happened seems the admin turned a blind eye which wouldn’t happen now. This isn’t the only instance that you hear about, albeit they are rare, and I’m sure some of them are bs but at the time word did get round about what Randy’s son and a player so who knows. Is there even any word on if Randy is bringing his son to Pitt? I saw the assistant position advertised so assuming he let the Existing staff go.
Looks like Waldrum did release the assistants from Pitt because they aren't listed anymore on the website.
Can’t blame him for wanting a fresh start for the program. Two Big Ten assistants are in line for North Dakota State; Indiana and minnesota Coaches. If the Northern Illinois Coach was indeed let go I would assume he would want that job too as he came from North Dakota State and has family ties there.
The MN assistant seems to apply for a lot of jobs only to withdraw after an offer....should be interested to see how it plays out. Both Krystal and Mike would do a great job.
More reliable sources would be any of the Notre Dame men's players that were on the team when he was escorted off campus in the middle of practice. I do not know the name of the female player he had inappropriate relations with, or the male player who was dating that female, but it caused a lot of drama in the soccer program at Notre Dame. Regardless, I think Randy no longer played that card on his interviews. This year he was told during a phone interview that the school had a nepotism law and he would not be allowed to bring his son (knowing he always demands this) and he said he wasn't on planning on bringing him. I don't blame Randy for what his son did, so best of luck to him. He has a big challenge in front of him.
Well, Pitt better damn well find out if Waldrum's son was involved with a player at Notre Dame, because if he was he damn sure can't coach at Pitt. He should pursue his own separate career. They had a coaching scandal at the Auburn softball program last year. Clint Myers, highly successful coach at Arizona State, left that program after officials there got tired of him trying to use his position to advance his son's career. Az. State would not let Myers hire his son as an assistant. Auburn then hired Clint Myers and was OK with him bringing along his son, Corey, as his top assistant. Corey had a sexual relationship with one of the players and apparently had made suggestive comments to others. The situation created great tension among the players--as one would expect with one of their own sleeping with the assistant coach--and eventually some of them revolted Auburn seemingly tried to keep the whole affair quiet, but the scandal got out and eventually the university sacked Corey Myers and then nudged Clint Myers out the door. He suddenly announced his retirement. Nepotism is never a good thing.
