I was told by a family friend that has a daughter that plays there. Got the word at about 4:30pm yesterday. Apparently the assistant has been named interim HC.
How so? He wasn't fired, he left on his own to take a club job (that's the rumor) so a contract didn't have to be paid out.
He's leaving cuz all UAB coaches were told the balancing budget measures to save football (which UAB was pressured to do) are failing. Massive drop in scholarships, including football. The basketball teams will maintain current levels. The Ivy League may offer more money when it's done.
Financially, UAB athletics is actually in a quite stable position. If this was three years ago I'd agree with holmes12 but not currently the case at all
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I poked around the website too. The Northwestern Ohio women's team only formed in 2013. 2014 - National Finalist 2015 -Final Four 2016 National Champions I must say that's very impressive, I'm sure the coaching staff won't be there much longer.
UAB hasn't been good since the last class that Yelton (Samford HC) recruited (approx class of 2005). It's a good job that can be attractive to player due to the quality of majors available. They should be in and around the top 50-70 RPI yearly.
Bang on! Will they opt for a promotion from within or a national search? Easy fix would be a promotion, but if you "care" about the program, and you wait this long to let the coach go, then maybe you are looking for a completely fresh direction. Who's out there as a HC that would jump this late?
Xavier and UAB... very interested to see what happens. Really bad timing as the players have maybe a week or two left of school. In any other situation you could see admins just promoting assistants, but would be tough in these two cases. Xavier assistant has 3 months of college soccer experience, surely a Big East school doesn't make that mistake. UAB associate head coach could potentially be bumped, but also pretty green with only experience having come from 3 seasons at an under performing mid major prior to UAB. Also, a phone call to previous employer may give some cause for concern. Xavier's saving grace could be they just went through the process 4 months ago and could have someone in mind. However, two of the coaches they spoke to last time around have left for other jobs and not sure they would want to come as sloppy seconds. I have a feeling this job will be going to someone who will not even have to change their home address. As far as UAB, interesting to see who is interested in the job and more importantly how interested the administration is in looking from someone.
And the one they really wanted gave them a flat no citing lack of necessary support to match the admin's expectations.
Would think that Xavier would be a quicker higher since they just went through this. I'm surprised that we haven't seen any 2016 Hot Seat "fired" coaches resurface at another location. Venture to say that UAB hires an assistant from an SEC school.
Alcorn State has hired Mississippi junior college (Copiah-Lincoln CC) coach Junior Noel: http://m.msnewsnow.com/msnewsnow/db_330628/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=rCLRJj3z Also, although it has been reported, the UAPB GA being promoted is not a done deal. It is still the most likely thing to occur as cost-saving measure, but there is some question in administration as to his competence, so there is a possibility they will open the position up. This is per a coach in another sport at UAPB who is a close friend.
UAB Skype Interviews with SEC Assistant, SOCON Associate HC, Big South Associate HC, and current UAB Associate HC.
4-year extension for MFM in Miami.... http://www.hurricanesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=28700&ATCLID=211588900
A four year extension for being part of the Miami family? If they ever have a good year, what will that be worth?
