Here it is--it's become a yearly rite of passage. The awesomest thread of the year for MLS fans!! Although it is still quite early to make predictions with any degree of accuracy--with 2 weeks in the books you at least have some game results to rely on beside just pure instinct! Our wooden spoon thread is made even more awesome this year by the fact that the MLS Supporter's Group has officially embraced the wooden spoon and made a trophy for this year! The Chicago Fire Supporter's group currently has custody of the giant wooden spoon. Hopefully that supporter's group won't destroy the giant trophy at the end of the year but rather will hand it off to the next "winner." -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok here we go-- after 2 weeks in the MLS season, there are several "contenders": Chicago Fire and DC United each have only ONE pt Vancouver Whitecaps, Columbus Crew, Seattle Sounders and NY Red Bulls all have ZERO points. Montreal Impact after 2 weeks are currently in the SS #1 spot!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- My prediction: I think this is a rebuilding year for Seattle and they might find it difficult to stay in the race this year. I may have to eat my words later, as Seattle has always proven to be in the thick of things in MLS come November, however this is just a prediction. Obafemi Martins will be missed. I think a close second for the Spoon this year will be New England--nothing to really base this one on--just a gut feeling. If NY Red Bulls win the spoon this year it would truly be a disappointing move from "first to worst." From winning the SS last year to Spoon this year. I wouldn't put it entirely past that team though--this is a franchise that has managed to win the spoon several times in its short existence Let's have fun in this thread and share your predictions as well as keep an eye on the "race for the spoon" throughout the season!!
I don't think we are giving that thing up. We will fight tooth and nail to keep it, or rather we like garber bucks...
If Chicago does keep it they would join San Jose and DC United as the only franchises to have won the spoon 3 times. They would also become the first team in MLS history to have won the spoon in back-to-back seasons.
I nominate a name change. Maybe a sponsor (because everything in soccer has a sponsor) We can call it the Knave Wooden Spoon of Disappointment award.
I can picture it on tv now...."The presentation of the MLS Wooden Spoon brought to you by Waste Management--Waste Management for all your garbage disposal needs....." Cue the tv camera cutting away to the less than thrilled expression on the face of the "winning" coach and the face of the team captain as they receive the giant spoon. Team Captain flustered, almost as an automatic mindless reaction, raises the spoon the way one would raise a real trophy--to the jeers, whistles, laughs, and catcalls of the crowd.... Team hastily makes its exit to the locker room being followed all the way tot he locker room by annoying reporter who asks ridiculous questions that serve only to make the team feel even stupider....
Quick question: How do i post charts/tables that i create on excel or numbers to the bigsoccer forums?
Or use the "table" function, sample as below. For easier conversion, you may pre-format your tables in Excel with the following syntaxes: “|” to separate individual cells in each row. “\” for new rows.
If they win it again this season or the next, they will set a new record for the fastest repeat winners. The current record is 2 seasons of gap between the closest spoons won by the same club, jointly held by: San Jose (1997, 2000) DC United (2010, 2013)
By the way, if Wooden Spoons were awarded by Conference/Division as well, DC United would be the record holder for the most consecutive Conference Spoons in 2000, 2001 & 2002. DC United and SJ Quakes would be the joint record holders for the most Conference/Division Spoons with 5 wins each: DC: 2000-02, 2010, 2013. SJ: 1997, 2000, 2008-09, 2014.
According to those standings they are not doing well at all-- Leche Gdansk is currently in a spot to qualify for the relegation playoffs. Having to fight in order to stay alive and keep their spot in the league!
i'm a firm believer that everything in life can eventually be boiled down to kevin bacon, charlie sheen, or nick cage.....
