The 2016 format, dates, and list of teams are out. The USSF has increased the number of amateur teams a couple of time this winter. It is up to 48 teams. Now there are: PDL - 19 teams NPSL - 15 teams Qualifying Tournament - 14 teams http://www.uslsoccer.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=32800&ATCLID=210689632 Round 1: (May 11) 48 amateur teams, 24 games Round 2: (May 18) 24 winners and 18 USL teams, 21 games Round 3: (June 1) 21 winners plus 9 NASL teams, 15 games Round 4: (June 15) 15 winners plus 17 MLS teams, 16 games Final 16 Draw: (June 16) Round of 16: (June 29) 16 winners, 8 games Quarterfinals: (July 20) 8 winners, 4 games Semifinals: (August 10) 4 winners, 2 games Final: (September 21) 2 winners, 1 game Also, these teams cannot face each other until the Final: Houston Dynamo (MLS), Rio Grande Valley FC (USL) New York Red Bulls (MLS), New York Red Bulls U-23 (PDL) Portland Timbers (MLS), Portland Timbers U-23 (PDL) Seattle Sounders FC (MLS), Sounders FC U-23 (PDL)
What is the relationship between the U23 PDL teams and their MLS parent teams? How is it different the the "2/b" teams that can't play in the Open Cup?
The difference with the PDL teams is that there are no complications with roster overlap--an MLS player can't be loaned to a PDL team. Still it seems they would rather not have teams under the same ownership facing each other.
I'm expecting another NASL fiasco again this year. I think we'll again see most of their teams focus on the end of the spring half rather then the Open Cup.
The U.S. Open Cup has a new logo and the pairings are out for the first two rounds. http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/201...-host-scenarios-released-for-2016-us-open-cup The tournament starts with 23 games on May 11.
Some teams will, some teams won't, and US Soccer will probably broadcast a few, as referenced before.
Last year about half of the 1st round wound up streamed. The majority of the 2nd round games were streamed. We probably won't get a good list until a day or so before the games.
Sounders U23 team is not owned by the Sounders. The relationship really only appears to be one of branding at this point. The coach doesn't even work for the Sounders organization anymore.
The 2016 tournament starts tonight. And we've had a disqualification. NTX Rayados are out. They didn't move. The Cincinnati Dutch Lions started in 2013 and are a sister club to the Dayton Dutch Lions. They also have a team here in Houston also known as the Dutch Lions.
Who knew there were so many lions in Dutchland! (I know it's actually called The Netherlands - het Nederlands to be precise - and that the lion is a prominent symbol there and in Flanders, not to mention England as well as on the Scottish coat of arms. It's just rather odd when you think about it, given those countries didn't have lions.)
TheCup.us has a preview page for tonight's games that includes some streaming links: http://thecup.us/2016/05/11/2016-us...ok-at-all-22-usoc2016-games-with-video-audio/
David vs. Goliath: Can older amateur O.C. soccer team beat the under-23 Seattle Sounders? http://www.ocregister.com/articles/outbreak-715317-team-soccer.html I suppose this is what cup competitions are all about.
Also, Rio Grande Valley had previously withdrawn from the tournament, so that takes USL participation down to 17. Though their business operations were separate from the on-field stuff (run by the Dynamo), but they didn't want to be considered as different from other MLS-affiliated USL teams. Which makes sense if the relevant concerns were more about player eligibility than ownership.

Nederlanders praten Nederlands in Nederland. (The country is not "het Nederlands," just Nederland. "Nederlands" is the name of the language spoken there.) The history of the lion as a heraldic symbol is long and boring, and basically comes down to "lions are badasses fabled in, er, fables, with whom one should never mess, so I'm going to put some on my shield."
First round advancement: Home teams went 12-10 (12-11 counting the forfeit) on advancement. By affiliation: USSSA 1-0 PDL 9-9 NPSL 7-7 USASA 6-6 USCS 0-1 In the head-to-head PDL v. NPSL games, the PDL went 5-4.

I was writing up exactly this. It's surprising just how even it was, given that I've seen PDL/NPSL as being a cut above other amateur operations, and the PDL/NPSL teams had a disproportionate number of home games. Current underdog preference is Harpo's, the sole USSSA team in the cup.
