am I missing something. Toronto's needs are defensive...Defense, Big, Strong Fullbacks and with their first pick they pick up a smallish midfielder? Is there nothing in Defense worth picking?

he isn't even on the radar until the 2nd round if you follow mock drafts....im confused when D is a primed for this draft for many teams....so even if you don't take a D, you leave one open for some other team to pick up instead of you.

Unless you're picking top 5, or maybe even higher, you can't draft for immediate need. You're not going to find someone at 9th overall who's going to step in this year and make an impact as a starter. Certainly aren't going to solve the defensive problems of last year with the 9th overall pick. Last year we picked up defenders in the #9&11 spots. The year before we picked up a defender with the #10 pick. Those players didn't solve the defense, and picking a defender at #9 this year wouldn't have either. Those players have a bright future, but there's no reason why we HAVE to pick a defender when we have them. The probability of a defender picked #9 this year having more of an impact this year than Simonin or Hagglund is pretty low IMO.
We already picked up defensive reinforcements via FA and trades that will actually make an impact this year. TBH I think we're pretty much set on defense for now. Another body back there isn't going to help much unless it's a starting CB or a top DM.

What we picked up was the best player available at that spot, which helps the quality of our prospect pool. We also don't have many AM/winger types, so he could end up being valuable depth this season already.

Our crop of defenders is pretty much set atm, even depth-wise. We had more of a need for depth in attackers, so even though Endoh may be a reach, he makes sense in terms of his position. Besides, he may just stay with TFC2 this year

The biggest defensive concern for us is in our midfield shape and whoever we end up signing with TAM as a #1 GK. Morrow-Perquis-Moor-Beitashour, on paper at least, is one of the better backlines in MLS, and Morgan-Zav/Hagg-Williams-Bloom is one of the better reserve crops as well.

I think TFC and MLS in general has reached the point where the assumption is that draft picks are going to TFC2 or the equivalent. There will always be exceptions but I don't think the expectation is direct to the first team.

I think it's both that and the fact that the USL partnership allows you to pick players that aren't quite MLS ready yet, but have a higher ceiling if given a bit more time to develop. ie more skilled players that maybe don't have the physical tools yet for MLS. Also the fact that we go into the draft with 26 players on the roster instead of the <10 that we have in the past means that we aren't forced to take the players that are most ready to slot in right now despite not having the highest ceiling.
