A shame about Houston's rollercoaster season. On the whole I think they are better than a few playoff-bound teams. If everybody sticks around (Lloyd in particular is a question mark) they are well poised for a successful campaign next year.

If I'm Waldrum the area I address is center backs; it's their biggest weakness. Brush and Privett are serviceable but no more. The highly touted Roccaro has made some bad errors, like tonight. I don't think she's quite ready to be the leader back there. Signing a solid, veteran CB to play with her would be smart.

Buchanan will be on the draft board, but she doesn't quite the bill for cool-headed stability. And, with Houston rising up the table, she will probably be taken by the time they pick.

[SEA-WAS] whom the scoreclock calls "DC"
03' 0-0 Sigvardsen mis-pings directly to Rapinoe at circle top mid-right. Quick forward pass sends Melis 1-v-2 through box top mid-right to 13m, shot to goalline center low smothered by Wys.

10' 0-0 Little chest-traps at circle back, turns ccw and hoofs long up mid-right. Rapinoe beats Dydasco to box top mid-right, drives to 7m mid-right, stops and tries to cut centerward -- shot blocked by legs, cleared.

12' 0-0 Little hooks ball away from E.Johnson at 22m mid-right, plays Rapinoe through box right to 9m mid-right. Rapinoe shoots hard across mouth, Wys dive-blocks it into traffic. Melis wrong-footed, misses a forward-leaning right donkey kick, Washington clears.

13' 0-0 Yanez escapes down wide left to 3m, crosses to Utsugi at 7m 6-left, turn-and-shoot sails high.

17' 0-0 Krieger left ck, to 6-top right, Barnes heads it away to 16m center. Huster shoots high leaning back.

18' 0-0 Sigvardsen underweights(?) a backpass at midfield mid-left, Melis steals and dribbles wide to arc top mid-left, pokes centerward to Yanez at arc tangent left. Quick scoop shot floats to Wys.

20' 0-0 Krieger left ck, Olympico bends toward crossbar 2/5 right, Kopmeyer pushes it over.

21' 0-0 Washington right ck, Ordega heads wide left.

22' 0-0 Off the gk, Little darts past the left flank to arc top mid-right, square pass to Melis(?) at arc top. Diagonal ground pass toward 6m mid-right for Rapinoe, E.Johnson pokes it over.

26' 0-0 Hinkle fouls Nadim in box, pk. Yellow card on Hinkle.
27' 1-0 Nadim pk, right instep into left side netting (D'Angelo stepped wrong).

37' 2-0 Nadim through box top right, ground pass toward spot (for Heath?), Eddy intercepts at 11m right post -- but clangs it away. Sinclair poaches behind her, cuts centerward to spot, shoots left foot across mouth past D'Angelo, off left post and banks across into right side pipe.

I think Jenn Hildreth and Kyndra de St. Aubin are doing a good job. Their commentary demonstrates that they did their homework before the game.

25' 0-0 Melis bends a low cross from box top wide right to 6-top center, Yanez hop-scissor try but jumps past it -- helped along by Church sprawling into her hip. Ball bounces to 3m right post, Yanez and Wys bump each other flat, neither get it -- Washington clear.

26' 0-0 Rapinoe switches from 25m box left to Melis at 15m mid-right. One-touch square pass to Little at box top right post, she can't shoot one-touch -- cuts centerward around 2, hooks a shot high wide left.

28' 1-0 E.Johnson passes to Kleiner just past midfield wide left, bad flick-on to Fletcher. Fletcher heads to Fishlock at circle center, she chases to circle top and flicks hard right outstep bouncing to box top mid-left for Rapinoe outrunning Krieger. Rapinoe chases to 7m mid-left, one-touch hard ground cross beats Wys at near post, rolls to 2m right post. Yanez leads Dydasco (and E.Johnson) from 25m mid-right to ball, slides and hooks it into 1/3 left back low.

33' 1-0 Fletcher longball to arc top box right, Dydasco heads it upfield. Little collects, passes down mid-right fast for Melis chasing hard to 1m, fast cross with no angle directly to Wys. Seattle seem to have decided that the only thing missing was some berserker tempo.

34' 1-0 Seattle switch to Melis at 32m mid-right. Melis dribbles to box top right post, and there are four Reign in the box ahead of her (Utsugi, Yanez, Little, Mathias), plus Rapinoe at arc left. Melis shoots left foot, blocked by E.Johsnson's lunge, deflects upward and drops at 6m left post. Utsugi thigh-traps before it lands, blasts into back right edge. Offside.

39' 1-0 Utsugi square pass right to Little at circle front tangent left. Little chips long direct to 10m mid-right, just over Fishlock with Dydasco tugging her left upper arm back. Fishlock taps back to Melis unmarked through box top right to 14m. Melis oddly not sure about her shot, overthinks her feet, finally snipes left instep to 5m left post -- just behind Rapinoe's head at a tough angle. Meh, just shoot on frame and see who stops you.

41' 1-0 Krieger fk at 30m wide right, headed away. Dydasco runs on and shoots from 22m arc top, Winters blocks. Kleiner collects to 16m 6-left, half-volley to center, Kopmeyer sprawls and blocks it right. Ordega turns on it at 5m mid-right, pulls a shross to 6m 1/4 left -- behind Lohman, but she sole-drags it softly forward to 1m 1/5 left. Kopmeyer +1 + Lohman sprawl, 3 other Reign thereat -- it's 1-v-5, Lohman crab-kicking at a sea of legs. Stengel arrives and toe-pokes back into Kopmeyer's chest, Winters finally clears.

    HT 1-0.

57' 2-0 Yellow card on Heath.
58' 2-0 Western New York subs in (1 of 3) #11 Taylor Smith for #3 Makenzy Doniak.
60' 2-0 Portland subs in (1 of 3) #21 Hayley Raso for #9 Nadia Nadim.
64' 2-0 Western New York subs in (2 of 3) #10 Lianne Sanderson for #8 Alanna Kennedy.
68' 2-0 Portland subs in (2 of 3) #11 Dagný Brynjarsdóttir for #7 Lindsey Horan. Attendance 21,144 = sellout and new records.

70' 3-0 Heath slides down at arc top, hooks a pass to Brynjarsdóttir running alone through box top 6-right to 9m. D'Angelo comes out low for a kick-save, Brynjarsdóttir blasts a shot high over her, across mouth into back left high.

71' 3-0 Yellow card on Betos, for delay.

46' 1-0 Washington subs in (1 of 3) #7 Christine Nairn for #27 Line Sigvardsen Jensen.

47' 1-0 Nairn right ck, to 5m left post, Fishlock(?) heads over endline left.
48' 1-0 Nairn left ck, Barnes heads away.

50' 1-0 Nairn right ck, to 6-top right post, Yanez(?) kicks it away and Little collects. Long switch right, Melis odd switch left -- to nobody, into near touch.

57' 1-0 Little passes to Melis at arc top box right. Quick chip to 5m center, too far for Rapinoe lurking on the left, Wys catches.

58' 1-0 Seattle direct chip to Melis at 12m mid-right -- she overruns her shot window, circles back to box top right. Quick shot from 18m mid-right, Wys dives (her) right and catches without rebound.

59' 1-0 Fishlock receives facing away at arc top left, Huster scissors her legs and hip-bumps her down. Foul.

60' 1-0 Little fk at arc top left, right instep bend over wall to 1/3 left, Wys catches without moving. I think she meant to aim more rightward ...

Eddy is a fantastic crosser of the ball. One of the biggest pleasant surprises of this season, as far as an unheralded player making a huge difference.

McDonald continues to do McDonald things.

EDIT: ...and Lynn Williams continues to do Lynn Williams things.

    77' 3-1 Eddy to McDonald's head
79' 3-1 Western New York subs in (3 of 3) #17 Kristen Hamilton for #15 Jaelene Hinkle.
80' 3-2 L.Williams  Similar to Chicago, a draw clinches the playoffs for WNY, as they'd be 6 up on Seattle with 6 to play for (or 3 with 3), and they hold the tiebreaker. +4'.

FT 3-2. Portland clinches a home semi, Seattle are still alive like a roach :alien:

Hell of a game in PDX. Ultimately, the one-goal margin makes you think back to the bogus penalty in the first half. And that's disappointing.

The Thorns players seem to have a bit of an entitlement complex. Like they expect foul calls to bail them out, when the other team is simply playing physical but clean. When they don't get the calls, they whine.
