The word awful comes to mind... Especially Furman. South Carolina really didn't need to send out a goalie to stop those efforts. I felt pretty bad for Lissek who made a sensational kick save on South Carolina's last attempt to keep Furman alive only to see yet another Paladin lean back and hit the ball well over the bar.

Didn't notice him. But then again, I didn't get home until the second half and the game was one of a couple things I had open on my computer. That said although Meyer was very easy to spot, I was looking for him. Thought Hoffmeister of UVU might have been him at first. In the very recent past it used to be that maybe UCLA, the better ACC teams, Akron and a few others teams were able to control the ball. But now programs like UVU and Seattle being able to play which is nice to see. The reason college soccer has historically been so kick and chase had less to do with subs and much more to do with rosters full of kids that couldn't control the ball.
Unfortunately for Georgetown the Men's basketball advanced in their tournament and ESPN decided to put their next game at the same time as the men's soccer game pretty much guaranteeing a piss poor turnout for the soccer game.
Hoyas, where are your priorities? Only 2 Big East teams in the field; both with a chance at a serious run. The Drake@Creighton live stream starting at 2:00 ET, if available, will be found here. http://www.gocreighton.com/watch/?Live=6

I'm not sold on him. Ugly, bunker-type soccer often ... ugh. Won't let the kids play the ball out of the back thus frequently losing possession and creating frantic moments instead of calm passing. Crazy that they got to the tourney with this style of soccer. Cal Poly was the highest goal-scoring team in the conference the past few years. They needed to shore up the defense for sure, but I think a few tweaks and good recruits would have taken care of that, not changing the whole tactical approach. I don't know whether to be happy or not but honestly, I'd rather watch soccer a la Holocher style, than this.
This season Cal Poly tied the record for wins, won their first ever conference tournament game and made the NCAAs for just the third time ever, and first time in 7 years. It's not pretty, but it's effective and it fits the fits the very narrow and somewhat short home field they play on (hence going unbeaten at home which I don't think Holocher ever did) He has some serious work to do for next year considering the team graduates it's top 3 scorers (Minter, Lagrassa, Colvey [tied for third]) and two time goalkeeper of the year Hamilton. But, for this season, he did a fine job.
Yes, that is why I said I don't know whether to be happy or not. I was trying to point out the irony in getting into the tourney playing like this vs. trying to play more like Barca and encourage more skillful players and build-up. I'd much rather watch Barca than a team that boots the ball out of the back. Respectfully, Brian, you don't go to all the CP games. I've been going for a decade. Things are not all good IMO, like traditions being pushed aside that we've had this past decade and that I've really enjoyed (thanking fans properly at end of games - in fact I've only seen Sampson do it once or twice; inviting young AYSO & club teams to play at half; having players meet with fans after the game - Sampson had them early in season doing cool downs thus all the kids who used to love getting autographs (including my own years ago when they were little) were disappointed many games, etc.). Whatever, I'll feel free to bag on him if I want since I buy season tickets. If the soccer turns ugly, I won't be so inclined to go in the future but I am giving him a year or two. Sorry, but I have high expectations after seeing the beautiful game on our small field for many years.
CC: what's your take on Justin Dhillon's decline in minutes, dropping from being a regular starter to now being a sub off the bench? If I recall, PH had him playing on the wing and he was pretty effective in that role and was a pretty decent contributor in assists his first two years there. Seems like his minutes have really dropped off and his stats as well. I know he was injured early in the season and perhaps fell out of the starting role when CP was getting results and SS not wanting to fix something that wasn't broke. His stature lends to him being the target forward but again, statistically it seems he wasn't all that effective playing that position this season. He also went from being an All Conference honoree to not even making the list this season. It's just curious to see given that he was a well regarded recruit out of the LA Galaxy Academy.
Here's waht each conference has remaining. Let's see where they stand at the end of the night. ACC – 7: Syracuse, Clemson, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Virginia, Boston College American – 4: South Florida, Connecticut, Tulsa, Southern Methodist Big Ten – 4: Maryland, Indiana, Ohio State, Rutgers CUSA – 2: Charlotte, South Carolina Big East – 2: Georgetown, Creighton Pac-12 – 2: Stanford, UCLA CAA – 2: (Elon, Hofstra) ONE: A-10 (Dayton), Big South (Coastal Carolina), Big West (UC Santa Barbara), Ivy (Dartmouth), MAC (Akron),MVC (Drake), Summit (Denver), WAC (Seattle), WCC (Santa Clara).
I actually have watched a lot of Poly soccer for the last decade as a diehard Gaucho fan/alum (also a lot of Irvine), but admittedly not all of them. So, I can't speak to traditions and will defer to you on all that stuff which has nothing to do with the actual soccer being played (but a lot to do with the game day experience which can influence the perception of the product on the pitch). Holocher basically had 4 good seasons and 4 bad seasons in terms of win/loss before resigning amid scandal. The 4 bad records were bad teams. The 4 good seasons were that way because the team was okay and he always put together a really weak schedule. I suppose the soccer looked pretty against the softer non-conference, but only in comparison to the poor play on the other side. Which, to me, wasn't so much Poly playing beautiful as the opponent being bad. Those Poly teams did not look nearly as good against better talent. They certainly did not look like Barca which is why they never finished first in the conference, never won a conference tournament game and only made one NCAA appearance in spite of 4 10+ win regular seasons. I think Sampson tailored the style of play to the team he had this year. That style that gave them the best chance to win the game was not tiki-taka. It was more George Kuntz. Unfortunately he had to play George Kuntz and that guy's much better at that tactical strategy.
UCSB will almost certainly be without starting goalkeeper Justin Vom Steeg. He had to come out of the Big West championship game at the half after aggravating a shoulder injury he's had most of the season and it's not looking good for his availability. Back-up Brandon Berke was the starter last season, but has played poorly in his appearances this year. He played the second half of the conference championship and made a few starts while Justin was with the National Team going 0-2-1 with a GAA somewhere around 2. His save % is .444 that's not good right? If you put it on frame it's going in the net more often than not?
Brian, you are wrong. (Sorry everyone else for hijacking this thread.) Wolfgang's last year: 6-14 (1-9 conference) Holocher: 7-8-4 (3-5-1); 11-4-4 (6-2-4); 11-6-6 (5-2-3); 8-10-2 (6-3-1); 8-7-3 (5-3-2); 6-9-3 (3-6-1); 11-7-1 (6-3-1); 10-9-2 (3-5-2). Three losing seasons with one being the first year where he improved the program tremendously over Wolfgang. I'm not going to get into a pissing match with you but during his time they played multiple ranked teams including Creighton, Akron, UCLA, Cal, Stanford, Indiana, Notre Dame, West Virginia, New Mexico and other strong teams such as Seattle, LMU, Washington and Denver. The issue for Cal Poly has always been having enough healthy bodies by the end of the year... thus they fade late in seasons most every year as they've never had a deep bench. Going to go enjoy my Sunday. I'm out.
UConn fall 1-0 at Indiana, who deserved their win. Still, I'm pretty encouraged by the way we ended the season - much better than our turgid start. And Olafsen is an absolute stud, easily our best defender since Gbandi.
A little bit late for some games, but let's say that I am keen to contribute.... Game day! Seven #ACCMSoccer teams are in action today in the second round. Full schedule: pic.twitter.com/JWrafntE0i— ACC Men's Soccer (@ACCMSoccer) November 22, 2015
Like I said. 4 good records. 4 bad ones. unless you think 8-7-3 is good? I gave you 10-9-2 (3-5-2) because of double digit wins. Regardless, the fact that 10-11 wins wasn't getting you in (or even on a bubble some of those years) tells you all you need to know about the overall strength of schedule. Here's the record against those exact teams in 8 years of playing: Creighton: 0-2-0 (lost 4-0 aggregate) Akron: 0-1-0 (lost 1-0) UCLA: 2-2-2. I already gave credit for being okay in this fixture (won 5-3 on aggregate) Cal: 0-1-0 (lost 3-1) Stanford: 0-1-0 (lost 3-2) Indiana: 1-0-0 (won 1-0) Notre Dame: 0-1-0 (lost 5-1) West Virginia: 0-0-1 (tied 0-0) New Mexico: 1-0-1 (2-1 win on aggregate) Seattle: 0-2-0 (lost 3-1 on aggregate) LMU: 1-2-0 (lost 5-3 on aggregate) Washington: 0-2-0 (lost 5-2 on aggregate) Denver: 1-2-0 (lost 5-3 on aggregate) Total: 6-16-4 with a -17 GD. Not beautiful against good teams.
Dayton pouring it on OSU to start the second half. In the first 6 minutes they've forced 2 saves, hit the post, and scored a goal to lead 1-0.
