Drake - Kentucky tied at one over on Watch ESPN: http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index/_/id/2706917/drake-vs-kentucky-first-round
Drake wins 2-1! Rematch against Creighton, who Drake led with 12 minutes to go before giving up two goals to lose in Omaha.
Hofstra beats Lehigh 2-1 in OT! Hopefully now they'll go to Georgetown and do what the Hofstra women's team did to the Hoyas in the women's ncaa tournament.
Got to think Kentucky loss was the biggest upset of the day. I was surprised how much they didn't push up when they went down a goal. Still very content to hang back. Drake gk didn't have to make a save last twenty minutes, pretty sure. FIU losing to Tulsa 3-2 also up there. Gave up the last goal 83'.
UCLA over Cal Poly 2-0. Second goal was an OG that just got the defender and trickled in like in slow motion. Tough way to go out.
A fair result. CP took a page out of UVA's play book and bunkered most of the night. Could of been worse had Abu converted the two breakaways/ 1v1's he created. Hamilton was lucky he wasn't sent off as well. Had Gorin been reffing, I believed a red would of been shown. Good season for CP with their 11 wins.
This result surprised me. But given as CSUF was without their defensive stalwart in Ricardo Covarrubias (red card in the BW tourney final), perhaps the defense was in disarray. The Fullerton GK in Elias was red hot in the BW tourney and was the tournament MVP. So clearly the disruption in the Titans back line had some issues without Covarrubias.
Could have been a lot worse as UCLA had the ball in a lot of good spaces inside the area and failed to find a way to pull the trigger. Yuell looked he was trying to dribble the ball into the goal after dribbling about 5 guys in the area.
Watched the second half of this one as SMU scored against the run of play (announcers said SMU had better of the play in the first half). UVU held the ball and created better chances but SMU created better finishes (UVU did have a decent finish called back). Aaron Meyer is a nice looking mid. Another very composed young mid.
What did you think of the big kid for SMU, Mauro Cichero? CUSA offesnive POY as a Soph. this year. (10 Gs, 8 Ast.) What Utah Valley did this year should not go ignored. Three seasons ago, they didn't have a team. In just two seasons, they made the NCAA Tournament playing good soccer and gave a traditional power in a traditional recruiting hotbed all it could handle. That program is gonna be a force.
Indeed. Sampson has that program in the right direction. Expect good things from them the next couple of years. (And then, if history holds, he'll annoy his players and lose the locker room. But for the next couple of years, good times!)
I wish I would've seen it, but apparently some brilliant PKs were taken in the South Carolina v Furman game as South Carolina missed less to win 2-1 in PKs. Furman was 1 of 5 on PKs....
SMU did well to finish their few legitimate chances ( which i don't think they would have done against the first team keeper who was out with a red card) while Utah Valley did not. More clinical finishing by Utah and this could could of been real ugly for SMU as they couldn't handle Utah's team speed. With everyone potentially back (only one senior who who didn't play much) and another year of growth Utah Valley could be a team to be reckoned with next year.
