By Kartik's logic, I guess San Jose could add another star to their jersey. They were NASL indoor champions in 1975.
Why do you keep quoting that guy, @Knave? At least be more selective... Of course DC United still has 12 trophies to show off...— Kartik Krishnaiyer 🇺🇦🌻⚽️ (@kkfla737) November 15, 2015
Vancouver could add a star too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Soccer_League_(1968–84)#NASL_champions
I also think it's unfair that the guy isn't considering the La Manga Cup or the Emirates Cup as titles.
I'm confused. Isn't NASL the answer for "authentic soccer" in this country? If so, shouldn't "Shields", being the acknowledgement of the regular season top of the table finish, mean more than some Americanized rinky-dink playoff cup?
And, any title won on artificial turf is not authentic, must be vacated. There's all kinds of wrong with all this. I think I may need to get on twitter and fix this guy but good.
@Knave, after watching some of this, I'm surprised you aren't more in favor of pro/rel. This Cosmos team would easily surpass some of the Chivas USA (never forgotten) and DC United teams as worst ever in MLS.
You're saying the joy of watching the Cosmos get relegated justifies allowing them in MLS? That's a hard sell edit - don't get me wrong, in the words of Moriarty (BBC's Sherlock), "every story needs a good old-fashioned villain". I'm all for the Cosmos being the quintessential villain.
It's amazing how the NASL still appeals to Pele (Tina Cervasio just did it and the NASL homepage does it). Let's move out of the middle 20th century, shall we?
Also, this is so faux Cosmos. When the Metros started in 1996 playing in the Cosmos' former stadium, didn't Pele come and basically anoint them as the true successors to the Cosmos?
This is one thing I don't get about the NASL: My hunch is that their fanbase is younger than the MLS fanbase. That it's mostly young men who have zero memory of the old NASL, and who indeed were pretty much all born after the old NASL's collapse. Why should they have any nostalgia for that league? Yet it seems they do.
I think it's part of the image they try to cultivate. The NASL was the top of the soccer pyramid in Pele's time. By constantly referencing Pele and the old NASL, they are claiming to be a continuation of the top of the soccer pyramid. It's all smoke and mirrors.
Former NASL HQ press guy. Now spreads rumors on Twitter. Somewhat well connected in NASL circles. Rumors not always true, but generally interesting. Has a Tinfoil Ted streak towards MLS and the USSF that alternates with bouts of critical clarity toward the NASL. But sometimes he does go Full Tinfoil.
I have never associated the NASL with hipsters. Wrong type of young man. I have always associated it with those young men who read Ayn Rand seriously.
Absolutely amazing how quickly the injured player, who had been writhing in agony, stood up once the red card was issued.
