I want a repeat of this: Except this time we actually win the game.... First up: A home match vs. Avellino. Finished 8th in Serie B last season. Beat Lega Pro side Casertana 3-0 at home in the previous round.
Official linup: PALERMO: Sorrentino (cap.); Vitiello, Gonzalez,El Kaoutari; Rispoli, Rigoni, Jajalo, Chochev, Lazaar; Belotti, Vazquez. SUBS: Colombi, Andelkovic, Goldaniga, Pirrello, Daprelà, Hiljemark, Brugman, Benali, Quaison, Bentivegna, Trajkovski, Cassini So Rigoni starts in midfield. I thought he'd fall down below some of the new signings but it appears not (or at least not yet). Quaison likely to be a sub at some point.
If you are in Italy, or you can make your computer think it's in Italy (hola) you can stream the game for free here: http://www.raisport.rai.it/dl/raiSport/dirette/ContentItem-49340f1d-5246-4cf7-931f-75d65af039e7.html In italian, of course, but high quality video
Belotti ignores a wide open Rigoni streaming down the field and shoots from outside the box. Easy save. They look good early on though.
I appreciate that the 3-5-2 got us promoted back to Serie A, and gave us a much better than expected first season back, but I still just don't understand it tactically. I never know where people should be, but they are never where I expect them
Half time. Palermo have had a few decent chances, but overall look a bit lost in the final third. Couple of soft hand balls in the box caused shouts from the players, I'm not sure either was all that bad, but either could have been given I suppose. If they were given against Palermo, I'd probably complain. 0-0
Avellino nearly score off a series of terrible clearances by Palermo. Luckly, it goes off the crossbar
Palermo is going to need to get a lot better a corners if they want to succeed this year.... Quaison subs on for Cochev
Its raining goals. 2-1 Quaison. Shot from Rigoni (I think) is saved, but only parried. Quaison cleans up
Avellino goalkeeper goes down for several minutes injured after a 3 man collision. Gets a yellow card for his troubles.
Full Time. Palermo start out with a win. Looked really solid defensively, probably some questions could still be asked about the attack. Didn't look overly threatening despite having the vast majority of possession.
Next up, Lega Pro side Allesandria, who beat Juve Stabia 1-0 today. Game will happen in December. Allesandria previously beat Serie B basement dwellers Pro Vercelli in the 2nd round.
Congratulations on the victory and thanks for providing the play by play. Hopefully more palermo fans start using this forum and it gets pretty lovely.
Looks like we're on pace with last year re: number of posts hit per game. Good to get a victory and advance!
