NY Greek American Atlas qualify for the 2014 US Open Cup with a 5-1 victory over Italian-American SC. Icon FC qualifies for the 2014 US Open Cup with a 2-1 win over Mass Premier Soccer at the US Adult Soccer Region I Final.
Just want to be clear on this, Region I tournament in USASA has been scrapped for next year or for good? And when I say this, I mean no more Region I tourney before the Round 1 Proper begins next May.
http://thecup.us/icon-fc-ny-greek-a...sasa-region-i-adopts-early-qualifying-format/ Region I is only using this format this year. Starting next year, the tournament will be the same as it has always been, only they will be qualifying almost a year in advance. So, next year's winners will qualify in 2014 for the 2015 US Open Cup. What is yet to be determined is which tournaments USASA will grant cup spots to. Some want it the way it is now, with only the two Open Cup qualifying tournament finalists getting in. Some want the Amateur Cup winner to also get a spot.
Thanks for the info, but I think I will agree with the commenters on the report. The Region I office should've given notice ahead of time that these changes were going to happen. But nothing we can do.
I wonder if the info from Region II can be found. They held their Open Division (of their Tournament of Champions) recently. (There are no results on the web site, yet.) Also, since they held their regional meeting at the same time, Open Cup qualification may be decided. Also, they are at least open (almost comical) about the deadlines: http://www.soccermidwest.us/id93.html "We will begin playing regional play off-games on March 30th. A draw will be held on MONDAY, MARCH 18th at 9PM EDT to determine who will play who in the first round and who will be hosting the match. Depending on the number of teams we have, there may even be back to back games, or double headers. It may not be fair to all teams. It is what it is and we just have to deal with it." http://www.soccermidwest.us/id19.html "The 2013 Region 2 Tournament of Champions will be held in Elizabeth Town Kentucky, Sat July 27th and Sun July 28th. The Region 2 Annual Business Meeting will be held at the host Hotel (Holiday Inn Express) on Friday July 26th."
Midwest Results: 2013 Region II Tournament of Champions Results Elizabethtown, Kentucky Men's Open Division SF: Michigan Sporting [4-2] Akron GFS SF: Dearborn Stars (MI) [3-2] South Beach Talents (IN) F: Dearborn Stars [5-5, Dearborn pk's] Michigan Sporting http://www.soccermidwest.us/id136.html So I guess Dearborn (at least, maybe also Mich Sporting) gets into the Open Cup. (Dearborn qualified this year due to a strange set of protests, replays, and widthdrawls; and then defeated the Michigan Bucks in the tournament proper.) Although, I would have loved to have a team called "South Beach Talents" in the Cup. (Or maybe even KY duo of "DerbyTown Jazz" and "Shenanigans" who got eliminated in group play.)
I've posted this elsewhere, but it's relevant to the 2014 cup as well. USSF has released their Audited Financial Statement for the year, and profits for the USOC competition were more than double in 2013 what they had been in 2012. You can find the USOC stats on page 7. Basically, USSF doubled their spending on the tournament, and as a result, they saw their profits more than double as well, from about $215k to $490k. Hopefully we begin to see a snowball effect here, where USSF reinvests profits in the tournament in order to further increase its revenue next year. Better advertising, more TV coverage and press, more help for small clubs that have to travel, and bigger prize money for high-achieving lower-division sides would be a start.
@triplet1 You probably have seen this, has some numbers about SUM and USSF sharing agreement that you may want to check out.
Hate when teams do this. First Fresno, now Des Moines? Why not invest your time and money into qualifying for the PDL playoffs next season (qualify for the 2015 USOC). https://twitter.com/cuellarchris/status/385453531676700672
Honestly, I don't understand why this is a problem. It's no skin off the backs of the organization or the players. It's surprising that more PDL/NPSL sides haven't attempted to go this route, since it would arguably give them a much better shot at making the tournament. Is your ire based on the fact that a PDL team could possibly take a spot from an amateur side? I guess that makes sense, but it's not a sentiment I'd entirely agree with. PDL are effectively amateur sides themselves, just with better infrastructure and revenue.
The listings are for fiscal-year-ending March 31, 2013 (boldface column) and f-y-e March 31, 2012. So I take this to mean the 2012 and 2011 tournaments, correct?
Compiling the eight annual reports (covering nine years), and assuming the FY year has the data from the previous year's Open Cup, we get: fiscal yrtournament yrrevenueexpensesprofit 20132012$1,120,596$593,886 $526,710 20122011$629,978$377,678$252,300 20112010$442,772$371,151$71,621 20102009$404,705$429,963($25,258) 20092008$351,981$423,748($71,767) 20082007$300,252$408,892($108,640) 20072006$236,402$439,801($203,399) 20062005$188,004$402,911($214,907) 20052004$182,202$414,143($231,941) Expenses were fairly constant from 2005/2004 to 2010/2009. The first profitable year (2011/2010) was both a reduction in expenses (negative-59K) and an increase in revenue (plus-38K).
Goal.com posted an article yesterday saying that starting in 2014, the USSF was going to remove the the CONCACAF Champions League berth from the USOC. Instead, the four berths would go to the MLS Cup Winner, the MLS Cup Loser, the Supporters Shield, and the Supporters Shield Runner-Ups. http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/66/u...up-could-lose-concacaf-champions-league-berth But goal.com removed the article this morning, and US Soccer posted this tweet. https://twitter.com/ussoccer/status/399636873179435008 So basically, goal.com posted rubbish.
So just thinking how next years format might play out. If we assume that 1) all teams return from last year; 2) all expansion teams play and; 3) there is an identical allocation to each tier/assocation, we will have the following USA based teams: MLS - 16 NASL - 9 USLPRO - 14 PDL - 16 NPSL - 8 USASA - 8 USCS - 1 USSSA - 1 TOTAL - 73 FORMAT: PR: As last year - NPSL (2), USCS (1) and USSSA (1). TOTAL - 4. NPSL teams seeded; paired geographically/randomly. R1: USLPRO (14), PDL (16), USASA (8), NPSL (6), PR (2). TOTAL - 46. USLPRO and 9 PDL(?) teams seeded; paired geographically/randomly. R2: NASL (9), R1 (23). TOTAL - 32. NASL and Top 7 USLPRO teams seeded; paired geographically/randomly. R3: MLS (16), R2 (16). TOTAL - 32. MLS teams seeded; paired geographically/randomly. And from this point it is straight knockout, seeded on geography/random.
I can only hope the NPSL acquires more spots. They should grow substantially this year relative to the PDL and should be able to take away one or two spots from the PDL sides. However, there is always so much politics involved in these things that numbers don't always matter. There is always the argument that the NPSL will have to make a better competitive showing in the Lamar open before being alotted more spots.
http://www.bigapplesoccer.com/amateur/amateur2.php?article_id=35795 New York Athetic Club gets another shot at glory this Thursday night [Nov. 21] when it faces in-form Lansdowne Bhoys in the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup regional final at Tibbetts Brook Park. NYAC, which lost to the New York Greek Americans in the Eastern New York U.S. Amateur Cup final last week, received a bye to the Open Cup final as Sal Rapaglia State Champions while Lansdowne crushed Clarkstown Eagles, 5-0, in the semifinals Nov. 14.
Next up for Mass United is MPS in the state final of US Open Cup qualifying. The final will be played on November 24th at 2pm, also at Roberto Clemente Field in Boston.
