With between 9-11 games remaining in the 2014 MLS regular season, I think the time is ripe for starting this thread. Here's a look at the current standings, and upcoming schedules of teams at the top(40 pts or more) of the tables in both the East and West. Feel free to speculate on results week to week, and let's see if our club can manage to add a 4th Supporter's Shield this season. This team continues to surprise me a lot. United somehow keeps on winning without Silva (earlier), than without Espindola (more recently). The Spaniard gets home-sick, Korb steps up. Parke goes down, Birnbaum steps up. Korb goes down, Kemp steps up. And the B squad, which fizzled in the USOC in Rochester, came through with a performance that gave the starters a complete rest. But it takes more than journeymen and rookies stepping up for 4-5 games. In the end, I think the top 2-3 Western teams are the strongest in the league, and one of them just may well separate themselves front the others in the West, and thus the whole league. One good thing going for United is that these teams play each other a lot (and LA Gals). But then I think that Sporting KC is just a bit better and has a slightly easier schedule than United.
Can't believe that I would the first to spot this, among all the die hard supporters... The title of the poll should read: "Will D.C. United win a 5th Supporters' Shield in 2014?"
Considering our so-so depth and the ridiculous congestion yet to come I personally am not even in SS mode yet. At this point I'm just hoping we survive one week at a time ... picking up points where we can ... and staying positive even if another team pulls away from us a little. After October 3rd we have a 9 day break before the last 4 games. I'd like to just get to that point still intact and then we can evaluate where we put our priorities for that last month. Ideally we have Champions League wrapped up before that last game at Tauro so that way we can apply ourselves to making that season ending sprint to the finish line.
So what you're saying is that we need to make room in the trophy case for the 2014 Supporters' Shield?
I voted no, but it's not because they don't have the quality to pull it off, I just think the path is easier for some other teams.
Two things: 1. As henryo noted, we'd be adding a FIFTH Supporters' Shield, not a fourth. 2. Because you started this thread, our chances just dropped to 0.0. Way to go.
Eismahn - don't pay any heed to the superstitious bunk. If it had any merit, no one would win anything ever. Pet peeve of mine, let's get out of the middle ages.
I disagree; we just outplayed, outclassed, outcoached, and embarassed them in their house and won by 3 goals. We are the best team in the East.
Well, at any rate, I voted no in the poll: we won our fourth supporters shield in 2007, so therefore we can't win it in 2014.
http://www.sportsclubstats.com/USA/DCUnited.html If D.C. do beat L.A. away on Aug-27, their SS Odds will soar to 49.3%: 62 points will pretty much "Seal the Shield" in 2014, which ever team it is...
So what you are saying is that it is certain that DC United are the official 2014 Supporters Shield winning club of Major League Soccer of the United States and nothing will change that fact, not even divine intervention?
Both the the 5th Supporters' Shield and 5th MLS Cup will arrive in 2014. The 2nd CONCACAF Champions League title will arrive very shortly in 2015... WeWinTrophies.com
Which is why I don't at all trust these stats. DC has a really tough schedule (when you include the CCL, which I assume this site doesn't factor in) and our depth will be tested. If we win in LA, I put our SS chances at around 25%. If we then beat the Red Bulls, you can bump it up to around 35% depending on what Seattle and others do this weekend.
I corrected the poll question. And I'm leaving the thread open. If you can't have a thread about the chance of winning when you are in first place at the end of August, you can never have one. And threads are what we do here folks. Carry on. Let's just avoid any possible optimism.
Yes, you have a point on CCL... Take it with a huge pinch of salt. (Then again, SKC have CCL too, and the Western teams have tougher schedules, so it may kind of even things out in the end...)
I'm not ready to talk about the Supporter's Shield yet. If we happen to be on top 3 or 4 weeks from now after our crazy-tough travel/game schedule then its worth thinking about. The top spot in the East, however is within reach. I hadn't noticed that we have a game in hand in addition to the point. They are also in a much tougher CCL group. They have some similarly tough trips including NE, NY, Chivas in 9 days before a CCL game. They also have to come to RFK, Philly, and NY in the last month. There's a trip TO Saprissa in the last week of the season mixed in there for them. They will likely need something from that game. We travel to Panama (potentially not needing any points to make it through) and then come back to Montreal... not nearly as tough a last week as they have. If we go into October tied or ahead, we could definitely win the East and get the home field in the playoffs (and get another CCL spot). I think winning the East is within reach although I'm not ready to start feeling like we're the favorite for it.
