Interesting... one would think their numbers would be higher. Anyone have figures on Australia W-League and Japan Nadeshiko League?
You can see some attendances, though sadly not all, for the W-League's previous season here. The final drew 2.5k and a round 7 game drew 2k, but aside from those two almost everything else was under 1k, and the three or so above 1k were just barely above. I can't find attendance numbers for the L. League easily, but considering I've never seen attendance discussed at all in the L. League/Nadeshiko thread, I'm guessing it's probably fairly low as well.
Just a note...someone inquired why the WSL wasnt on the list a posted...apparently they only had one match scheduled for last weekend (451).
Thank you, seeing Europe's numbers made me curious about them. I see; can't do average on one game, do you have a number for that one game?
So, I shouldn't get bored. I dug through the WUSA and WPS records and added to the list @kenntomasch posted a while back of the top WoSo club attendances: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_attendances_in_United_States_club_soccer#Women.27s_soccer I was very tempted to use a cutoff of 15k but decided to throw the SoCal fans a bone. ;-)
You coulda just asked. Found this site that seems to have all the WUSA scores for 2001 and 2002: http://soccerstats.us/c/womens-united-soccer-association/ Unfortunately it's missing a bunch from 2003.
Yeah that's the site I used to update the Wiki page. Best thing for 2003 is to use the WayBack Machine. For example: http://web.archive.org/web/20031008233520/http://www.wusa.com/schedule_results/full_schedule/ (@kenntomasch ) Sadly, you can't read some of the boxscores since the machine apparently never archived them, but most boxscores and all the scores themselves are on that archived WUSA page.
So I just realized that my list on Wiki is missing the 8/17/14 SEA@POR game (and several other 2014 @POR games above 14k - I think I'm going to re-raise the cutoff on Wiki to 15k, sorry LA) and 4/19/03 WAS@SJ, and Kenn's list is missing the 8/25/01 ATLvsBAY WUSA final and the 8/24/02 WASvsCAR WUSA final.
Would it be possible to put an asterisk or some other notation next to the games that were doubleheaders?
If I knew which WUSA games were double-headers or not, then yes I would. Also: I just made a "records and statistics" page for WUSA (still WIP since I still need to add cumulative reg. season and playoff records). Imagine my (lack of) surprise to find out that the New York Power owned the lowest attendance figures each year.
(All with the local MLS team unless noted.) 5/12/2001 Boston at Washington 6/30/2001 Carolina at Washington 7/27/2002 San Diego at Washington 5/18/2002 Carolina at Washington 6/01/2002 Washington at Boston 4/19/2003 Washington at San Jose 4/26/2003 Atlanta at Washington (USWNT) 5/03/2003 San Diego at Boston 5/17/2003 Carolina at Washington 7/19/2003 New York at Washington
Turns out I actually did have all those scores, they were just on another drive somewhere. For everyone's edification/future use/posterity: WUSA Standings | WUSA Results | WUSA Attendance WPS Standings | WPS Results | WPS Attendance NWSL Standings | NWSL Results | NWSL Attendance W-League Attendance (Through 2011, I have to update yet. And I have to do the all-time W-League standings at some point.) Clip and save.
You've done really great work. It still would be nice to be able to separate out joint games with MLS teams and the USWNT. Notwithstanding some protests about suggestions that the joint Chicago Fire/Red Stars game was artificially skewing the Red Stars' attendance numbers this year, it really is not possible to compare the different women's leagues' attendance without taking the joint games out of the data base. Only without the joint games can we really gauge the popularity of women's soccer standing on its own. Anyone want to tackle separating out the joint games?
Point of order: The argument earlier was not contesting whether the game was skewing the numbers, but whether to count that attendance as real - it being atypical was a given. Whatever it did to the statistics, those were paying customers that CRS saw at least some of their ticket prices. And the same argument holds for the WPS and WUSA double-headers, too. And to answer your question: taking out the double-headers will not A) change the overall averages for the league much, considering how relatively rare double-headers are among all data, and B) will actually introduce an artifact for the WUSA Freedom considering they had a not-insignificant percentage of their games as doubleheaders.
That's what I'd like to do, but I can't find the attendance numbers for all the individual matches. I asked kenntomasch if he had them, but he didn't get back to me.
*sighs* I tell you, it's not a big change. And there's a REALLY quick way to do it. WUSA totals: 1,826k / 252g = 7,246avg WUSA doubles: ~210k / 10g WUSA recalc: ~1,616 / 242g = 6,678avg WPS totals: 837k / 213g = 3,930avg WPS double: 16k / 1g WPS recalc: 821k / 212g = 3,873avg NWSL totals: 821k / 196g = 4,189avg NWSL double: 15k / 1g NWSL recalc: 806k / 195g = 4,133avg The doubleheaders are lost in the noise. No reason to discount them in this analysis, the comparison between the leagues does not benefit or suffer either way.
....really?? The "totals" are easily taken just from Kenn's site. The double-headers for WUSA have been discussed in the thread ad nauseum before, it's a quick addition. (The lowest two of the ten actually weren't above 15k and thus haven't been mentioned, but I was being generous and just gave them ~15k each. They're truthfully lower and thus affect WUSA's recalc average even less than what I showed.) The double-headers for WPS and NWSL are the only two double-headers either of those leagues had, unless there's an LA Sol double-header or two I've forgotten. (And even if I had, WPS's numbers are already below those of NWSL, so it doesn't matter.) Simple math after that.
