New York Red Bulls are USA2 as MLS supporters shield winners.

They can be promoted to USA1 should they win the MLS Cup; either way, they will be in Pot A for draw.

Deleted my prior post, somehow I was thinking KC won the Open Cup before seeing the post above.

So hand me downs as follows.

KC as 2nd best record in the league
Portland as 3rd best record in the league (both KC and NJ would need to make the final for PDX to get the hand me down)

There is no way Portland can get the hand down. They can only qualify by making the MLS Cup final. This is because NY and KC will both play in the East conference play offs, hence 1 team from the West will qualify.

The remaining two spots will go to one team in each of the following groups:

    1) Kansas City, New England or Houston (if NY or Montreal make the MLS Cup Final, Kansas City will be given the spot as Supporters Shield runner-up)
    2) Portland, Salt Lake, Los Angeles, Seattle or Colorado.

Colorado and Montreal were knocked out in the play-in round. If New York and Kansas City both win their quarterfinal matches, Kansas City will be guaranteed a spot in next year's CCL, either through the hand-down spot or their own qualification.

New York is out, so no hand-me-down spots in MLS this year. HOU, SKC, RSL, and POR fighting for the last two CCL spots.

CONCACAF Champions League: Portland Timbers may have 2014-15 berth, pending USSF plan
    November 22, 2013

    proposal for USA CCL bids:
    1) MLS Cup winner
    2) Supporters' Shield winner (team with best regular-season record)
    3) Other MLS regular-season conference winner that is not the Shield winner
    4) US Open Cup winner

By the way, there seems to be a myth that the USSF (alone) determines the USA bids. To quote the CCL rules, the decision is between the Association (USSF) and the Confederation (Concacaf), but Concacaf holds the final decision themselves:

3.4 The specific entry criteria for each Member Association, or Regional Association in the case of the CFU, shall be agreed between CONCACAF and the Member Association or Regional Association in question.

3.5 In the event of any disagreement in establishing or applying the entry criteria, CONCACAF may determine and apply the entry criteria at its sole discretion.

Sporting Kansas City advanced to MLS Cup. I think the CCL allocations should be determined before the season. In UEFA, changes in country coefficients after 2012-2013 are for the country allocations in the 2014-2015 Champions League and Europa League. The changes do not go into effect for 2013-2014 so that clubs competing in the 2012-2013 leagues knew what they needed to do to qualify for the 2013-2014 Champions League and Europa League.

They have been determined for the season every time before. I think what's going on now is that MLS/USSF proposed new changes and CONCACAF is dragging its feet. I'd expect qualification to stay the same for 2014-15, and then if the new changes are implemented, they'll be in place for 2015-16.

Funny thing is, if the MLS Cup Final ends up being Sporting Kansas City vs. Portland Timbers, both teams are in the 2014-15 CCL no matter what. :D

Real Salt Lake won, so Portland has to root for the CCL spot to go to Western Conference regular season winner.

The next guaranteed qualifier will be determined tomorrow at 9:00 p.m. EST in Panama, when Tauro play San Francisco in the 2013 Apertura final.

Arabe Unido was 7th and Sporting San Miguelito was 8th out of 10 in the Apertura. Do you think they did worse in Panama because they were playing Champions League games?

IMO, Sporting San Miguelito appears one of those fly-by-night teams that have one good playoff run and return to the norm the next season (see: Chorrillo last season). Árabe Unido, OTOH, only collected two points from their first five league games before starting on their continental schedule; while CCL play isn't directly responsible for their Apertura finish, the two-front campaign probably prevented them from recovering from that horrid start.

Tauro held on to a 1-0 lead to win the 2013 Panamanian Apertura, tie Árabe Unido with the most LPF titles all-time and lock down continental play for next season.

    Our current list:

    2014-15 CCL Qualifiers

    1. DC United [USA4]
    2. New York Red Bulls [USA2]
    3. Sporting Kansas City, Real Salt Lake or Portland Timbers [USA3] *
    4. Sporting Kansas City or Real Salt Lake [USA1] *
    5. Tauro [PAN1 or PAN2]

    * Pending CONCACAF decision on the USSF proposal to change the USA3 berth

Stop me if you've heard this before: in Nicaragua, Real Estelí finished first in the regular-season table, won the Apertura title and are now odds-on favorites to grab the CCL spot by topping the full-year table.

And the first semifinal guarantees us at least one Mexican team repeating from the current CCL. Meanwhile, if León take out Santos, they would be the first debutant in the 2014-15 edition.

I remember a lot of people thinking that before the second leg of their semifinal against Tijuana in last year's Apertura.

This team is definitely much better my friend. Leon struggled in that 2-0 win vs Tijuana. This Leon played Santos off the field.

After a 1-1 draw in the MLS Cup Final, Sporting Kansas City outlasted Real Salt Lake 7-6 on penalties to win the league title and grab the last US top seed for the next Champions League. We'll now have to wait and see CONCACAF's final decision on the USSF proposal...if they don't give the game away with their Monday write-up.

    The list:

    2014-15 CCL Qualifiers

    1. DC United [USA4]
    2. New York Red Bulls [USA2]
    3. Real Salt Lake or Portland Timbers [USA3] *
    4. Sporting Kansas City [USA1]
    5. Tauro [PAN1 or PAN2]

    * Pending CONCACAF decision on the USSF proposal to change the USA3 berth

Called it: I thought they might crack when Oribe Peralta opened the scoring, but León fought back for a 2-2 draw to win the series 5-3 on aggregate. They'll make their maiden CCL voyage alongside América, who return after pulling off a 2-0 comeback against Toluca to extend their title defense (as the superlider, by the way: the days of the maldición are over).

    2014-15 CCL Qualifiers

    1. DC United [USA4]
    2. New York Red Bulls [USA2]
    3. Real Salt Lake or Portland Timbers [USA3] *
    4. Sporting Kansas City [USA1]
    5. Tauro [PAN1 or PAN2]
    6. Club América [MEX1, MEX2 or MEX3]
    7. Club León [MEX1, MEX2 or MEX3]

    * Pending CONCACAF decision on the USSF proposal to change the USA3 berth
