Swept by the Rays. In our own house. Am I the only one who noticed? Did anybody out at The Stadium really care about that? When did the Yankees become less about winning baseball games and more about the cult of personality surrounding a retiree?

Girardi playing musical starters. Warren tonight, Pettitte tomorrow, Kuroda still not officially announced for Sunday.

vs. Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium
    Rays 7, Yankees 0

Yankees finally woke up last night. They put the traveling carnival on ice for a game and used Robertson to close it out. David got booed by the crowd because they wanted you-know-who. Astros lost their franchise-high 13th in a row.

On Sunday, the Astros will "honor" Mariano. I'd like to know what shared history the New York Yankees and Houston Astros have together. Did I miss some connection over the last 19 years? For God's sake, Houston just moved over to the American League this season. Excuse me if I don't tune in until the first pitch. I want to see the game -- ONLY! This endless horse-and-pony show is making me sick.

Girardi said he's leaning towards using Huff to finish the season tomorrow.

Robinson Cano reportedly wants 310M for 10 years. The guy refuses to even bust it out of the batter's box. Hey Robbie, don't let the door hit your 31-year-old ass as you leave.

vs. Houston Astros (51-109, .319) at Minute Maid Park
    Yankees 3, Astros 2
Sat.- Andy Pettitte (10-11, 3.88) vs. Paul Clemens (4-6, 5.69); 7:10 on YES
Sun.- David Huff (3-1, 6.06) vs. Erik Bedard (4-12, 4.81); 2:10 on YES

Nice finale to Pettitte's career with a 1-run, 5-hit complete game. Thanks for everything, Andy!

    Yankees 2, Astros 1

The season ends with a sweep of the Astros, the worst team in baseball. The Yankees finish at 85-77, the poorest showing since their current run of winning records began back to 1993.

    vs. Houston Astros
    Yankees 3, Astros 2
    Yankees 2, Astros 1
    Yankees 5, Astros 1 (14 inns.)
    A.L. East - Final Standings
    Boston: 97-55, .599
    Tampa Bay: 91-71, .562 (6)
    New York: 85-77 .525 (12)
    Baltimore: 85-77 .525 (12)
    Toronto: 74-88, .457 (23)

First order of business is to re-sign Joe Girardi as manager. He just completed a 3-year deal (at $3M per) from 2010. Next is to bring back Robinson Cano or let him walk. And the sooner a decision is reached in the A-Rod arbitration case, the better. The Yankees need to know if he's out for the entire 2014 season or not, since it will affect any moves to be made in keeping the team under its stated $189M payroll threshold for next year.

Staying under $189M will reset the luxury tax percentage the Yankees will have to pay in the future. Contrary to what some seem to think, the Yankees will be able to go back to spending like drunken sailors in 2015.

The posting fee does not count towards the payroll luxury tax, so the Yanks won't have to restrain themselves as far as that is concerned.

The Yankees extended 1-year/$14.1M qualifying offers to free agents Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and Hiroki Kuroda. If any of them now leave, the Yanks will receive a compensatory pick in next year's player draft from whatever team signs them. The players have until Nov. 12 to accept or reject the qualifying offer.

It's expected Granderson will accept and Cano and Kuroda will reject.

All 3 Yankees extended qualifying offers -- Granderson, Cano, Kuroda -- have turned them down. Granderson is an ingrate and apparently the Yanks are fully prepared to move on without him. Reportedly they have the hots for Carlos Beltran. Beltran realizes how the civilized, modern day Designated Hitter rule in the American League will help him. And he's wanted to wear the Pinstripes for years but the Yankees always foolishly had other plans. Well, it's time. Come on to The Big Ball Park in the Bronx. We're waiting with open arms!

As far as Grandy is concerned, he's meeting with the Mets later this week. What a laugh! Does he think he's going to punch out 40 home runs in an unfriendly pitcher's park like Citi Field? I hope the beloved Crosstown Rivals do sign him. They will deserve each other's misery.

Phil Hughes is officially a former Yankee. He signed with the Minnesota Twins for 3 years/$24 million.

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired catcher Chris Stewart from the Yankees for a player to be named later. Stewart hit .211 with 4 HRs and 25 RBIs in 109 games for Yanks in 2013. He threw out 17 runners runners.

In other ex-Yankee news, pitcher Ted Lilly announced his retirement. He went 130-113 with a 4.14 ERA lifetime in 15 seasons with the Expos, Yankees, A's, Blue Jays, Cubs and Dodgers. On the Yanks, he was 8-12, 4.65 from 2000-02.

    There's a link from a Mariner's fan site...

    http://www.marinerslatest.com/2013/12/robinson-cano-inexplicably-agrees-to.html#.UqMxFzK9KSM

The downfalls of this contract is fairly obvious: 10 years for a player in his early 30's is, in a word, insane. The first few years will be fantastic as far as production and value, probably, but the back end of that contract is going to hurt. More than likely anyway. The most recent 10 year contracts (A-Rod and Pujols) are looking disastrous, to say the least. Pujols not even halfway through his contract yet.Dave Cameron wrote a post over on ussmariner.com about Cano's expected value over the course of a 10 year deal. You should give it a read, but long story short, it doesn't look good. Is the excitement of the upcoming season and the several seasons to follow worth the hit the Mariners will take on the back end of the contract? That's a question that won't be answered until it happens, but all indications point to no.

Sometimes the best deals you make are the ones you don't...

Yanks Nix Gardner-for-Phillips Deal - ESPN
The guy also has "makeup" issues and could be a malcontent in the clubhouse. So the Yanks are making the right call. If Gardner goes, it's better if we get a pitcher in return. But I'm not in favor of dumping Gardner (or Ichiro or Vernon Wells, for that matter). One of our problems the last few seasons has been a lack of depth on the bench. These guys provide that, and I'm sure there'll be more than enough playing time to go around. Besides, we need to see what's up with Tanaka's posting and A-Rod's suspension before getting rid of players because we supposedly have "too many" of them.

Personally, I hope the Yankees sign free agent Omar Infante for second base.
