The Yankees extended 1-year/$14.1M qualifying offers to free agents Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and Hiroki Kuroda. If any of them now leave, the Yanks will receive a compensatory pick in next year's player draft from whatever team signs them. The players have until Nov. 12 to accept or reject the qualifying offer. It's expected Granderson will accept and Cano and Kuroda will reject.

The first few years will be fantastic as far as production and value, probably, but the back end of that contract is going to hurt. More than likely anyway. The most recent 10 year contracts (A-Rod and Pujols) are looking disastrous, to say the least. You should give it a read, but long story short, it doesn't look good. So the Yanks are making the right call. If Gardner goes, it's better if we get a pitcher in return. But I'm not in favor of dumping Gardner (or Ichiro or Vernon Wells, for that matter). One of our problems the last few seasons has been a lack of depth on the bench. These guys provide that, and I'm sure there'll be more than enough playing time to go around.
