I've only seen 16 of them! I'm very weak on Japanese films. Some of these I had never heard of. The 400 Blows has been sitting there on my netflix queue for a long time...
I'm weak on non-Kurosawa Japanese films as well. The wife and I may make that our project after catching up on some TV we're working on now. The 400 Blows is one of the few French new wave films I really enjoy, and probably Truffaut's best.
Singin' In the Rain my ass! It's a glorified (albeit entertaining) jukebox musical! Gigi is the best musical film of all time.
Wow -- In the Mood for Love at #24. I loved that movie so very, very much; but never would have thought it would be rated that highly. Works for me.
That was my first thought upon seeing the list. I think it's a damn masterpiece. I loan my copy to people all the time and have only ever had one person say they didn't like it, but he has virtually no interest in anything produced outside of Europe or South America so I took that with a grain of salt.
Also, it was nice to see Citizen Kane get the bump to #2. I think it's one of those things were a lot of critics feel they have to say it's the best film every to be taken seriously.
Ozu is a great place to start. Late Spring is my personal favorite, though Tokyo Story is quite good too.
