Posted elsewhere but again DC United plays the winner of next Tuesday's (May 22) Aegan Hawks (USASA) v Richmond Kicker (USL) 2nd Round match. It's a home game (soocerplex) if it's against the Hawks and it's away if it's the Kickers on May 29th. I find it interesting that if United progresses the next game (4th Round) is against the winner of the Colorado Rapids v Jacksonville United(NPSL)/Tampa Bay(NASL) match. Interesting new potential opponents. I really like what they've done with the Open Cup format this year. The Cup.us did and does great work covering the Open Cup (certainly better than anything MLS ever did). I think the person behind it just volunteers all the time and effort, maybe not, I don't know but give the site some love.
This year will be the best tournament with the format they have implemented. I'm always excited about this competition, but this year added bit with exciting unique match ups seeming far more likely. I am fine with either opponent and hope our depth shows in this and league.
In the past, the USL has broadcast many of their teams' Open Cup games. But if it's against Aegan Hawks it'll be on DCUnited.com or nowhere at all.
I am sure everyone knows this already, but the Aegean Hawks are a D.C./Arlington based men's amateur team. They play in the Washington Premier League. I believe this is their third trip to the U.S. Open Cup, and first victory. If they win against Richmond on Tuesday, the next match vs. DCU will be presumably be one of the first competitive city derbies DCU has ever played (correct me if I am wrong on that).
All I know is even though I like Richmond Kickers, I will be secretly hoping at least a tiny bit for a surprise upset so that next week I can drive to Germantown instead of Richmond to cheer United on. It is a much shorter drive home afterward That being said, I will likely be at the 'Plex Tuesday rooting for the Kickers. I talked to the RVA folks Wed night and none of them seem to be coming, so who's gonna stop be from fighting with that damned kangaroo this time?
I will hold you back, as I will be in attendance. BTW, He's not named Kickeroo for nothing, his toe nails/claws could gut you pretty easily.
Nah, unless they changed it up from last year it's a guy (gal?) in a Kangaroo suit. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Kickers. Back in '94 and '95 my family and I went to most of the Kickers' home games. '95, especially was a good year as they won both the league (was it the A League back then?) and the USOC. Richie Williams was in fine ankle biting form back then. I know I'm in the minority here, but I'll be rooting for a Kickers' win next Tuesday. It means getting home from our match at around 11:00 PM, rather than sometime after 1:00 AM. asitis
I'm pretty sure the bracket on the Open Cup site isn't binding. They'll likely release the 4th round pairings once all the 2nd round games are finished. It would be nice to see some more variety in the matchups though.
******** the kickers, they broke milton reyes, and they don't allow beer in there stadium, they can eat a bag of dicks
Milton was non-contact injury. No excuse for the lack of beer, though. What kind of family atmosphere is that? Every family I know has a at least a couple of drunks.
I went to my niece's soccer game last week and was shocked to find no beer, anywhere. You'd think some of the dads would have at least brought a keg. Then I realized it was probably unrealistic to expect alcoholic beverages at a soccer game for 9 year-olds.
Would love to see the Hawks beat the Kickers. But would also like to take a small road trip to Richmond, so whoever wins would be great. PS. I could be wrong, but I think the Kickers are owned by a religious group or something, that is why they don't allow alcohol.
They were not owne by a religious group, but by a religious family, the Ukrops. Their grocery stores did not sell alcohol, nor were they open on Sundays. I believe that their grocery stores have been sold to someone else. If they still adhere to the closed-Sunday/no-alcohol policies, I couldn't tell you.
The Charlotte Eagles are an explicitly religious team. * Because their God doesn't have better things to worry about than USL Pro soccer. ** I should have updated my avatar before I got snarky.
The good news is you can still change it now and it will be reflected on all your posts here, now, then, and forever. It's like a Last Rites Get out of Jail Free Card for situations just like yours. The Big Soccer Jesus loves you.
