Totally missed the game. They lost 3-2, good for him to play this type of match.
    Was him defending on Ibrahimovic?

A solid game for Yoshida as usual. Nearly scored today as well. He had to cover for Stephens, his CB partner, as well, given that it's clear that Stephens is completely out of his depth. Southampton won the game 4-3 against Watford.

Poacher's instinct from Yoshida. Awakening his inner Inzaghi.

Wow, Yoshida today is the captain!

I think we can already say he's going to be best CB in Japan's history.

Nakazawa and Tulio were damn good back then. The best CB duo of JNT at a WC ever imo.Yoshida is good too but Morishige is average compared to them, thats why Yoshida-Morishige are not as good as duo as both of them imo.

They did their job at the world cup in a squad who played on counters, Gordon. If we look at fheir career, Yoshida is on another level. Tulio in particular has been trash in the last years in jleague

That's right but WC final stage for japanese football sake is more important than the success of the single.

For example: japanese footballers in Europe in the 2010-2014 years achieved amazing results and Zaccheroni did astonishing things BUT the horrible 2006ish WC nearly erased all the good work done before the brazilian debacle.

If Yoshida will epic fail in Russia none will care about his nice season(s) in England and that's what matters.

How does a bad World Cup result "undo" progress? That really makes no sense.

And how do you set up a national team to do well at international tournaments? Perhaps by selecting players who have become international/world class by playing with and against the best players in the world in their primary occupation?

That Yoshida is the best center back ever from Japan should not be a debate at this point.

Nobody is debating Yoshida being the best Japanese CB but rather I just think that as of now, Nakazawa/Tulio is still the best CB duo of Japan at the WC ever. Yoshida/Morishige still has yet to overtake them as a duo unless maybe Japan reach further than R16 at next year imo. Japan reach R16 at 2010 basically due to their defence and free-kicks.

I liked that duo as well but let's not forget the team was in shambles until Okada had the whole team play defense. Plenty of attacking talent on that team but they scored from free kicks because they didn't attack often enough to do anything else.

Okada decided on defense because he knew that attacking would not work based on the matches played prior the WC including the many friendlies where Japan lost, there is a reason why he did not bring Nakamura along because Nakamura cannot defend. Okada decided on playing a defense-oriented style with strong emphasis on set-pieces and brought the result. Tulio/Nakazawa is still the best CB duo of JNT at the WC thus far imo, hopefully Yoshida/Morishige can surpass them next year.

What he was trying to suggest is that Tulio and Nakazawa weren't exactly "rocks" before the world cup...
