2011 SEA Games Football Draw: Group A Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand , Cambodia Group B Vietnam, Laos, Brunei, Timor Leste, Philippines, Myanmar Almost all the favourites are now placed in Group A, the group of death. Tough luck for those teams. On the other hand the football gods are smiling on the Philippines. Their chances of getting past the group stage just went up. Still a long shot because of their lack of preparation but hopefully this will give the team time to gel in the group stage if they play their cards right. Reminder to those unfamiliar with these games. This is an U-23 tournament. An analysis by what looks like an Indonesian fan of Group A: 26th Sea Games – Football : Analysis of Group A leave a comment » 1. Indonesia, still remains the pre-eminent in this group, as the host, the composition of the squad that has been focused to the SEA Games in the long term, have a squad that qualified, especially in attacking side, qualifying for the semi-finals should not a difficult thing. 2. Malaysia, the majority of players is almost the same as in last year with little change in composition due to their busy schedules in Olympic qualifier, a major aspect changes occurred in the side of the head coach, under the coach Ong Kim Swee, which have not been able to bring this team to show their best form. 3. Thailand, the concentration is divided between the national team and U-23 national team, their high expectations of the senior national team made the preparation of U-23 national team to be less than the maximum, obtained unsatisfactory results in some warm-up tournament, but Thailand still required to keep count as the favourite side regardless of some of their current deficiencies. 4. Singapore, in contrast with the senior team, this team contains the local players without the naturalized players, relying on collectivity team game, the young and fresh Lions have the potential for surprise but may be limited only to compete in the group. 5. Cambodia, a mysterious “picture” for this team, their last preparation for this tournament that is held a warm-up tournament which they hosted, but still got disappointing results, in general is still difficult for Cambodia to compete in this group. The Conclusion : competition to through into the semifinals seems just would involve Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, by no means ignoring the possibility of a surprises from Singapore. Meanwhile, Cambodia is predicted to be stopped on the group stage. http://seafootball.wordpress.com/2011/10/19/26th-sea-games-football-analysis-of-group-a/
representation of thailand is C grade . in asean We'r strongest Thailand's hopeless WC2014 So Seagames's important tournament Champion Only.
Right pomkiatsuk, Since ASEAN members countries are not doing well in WC qualifying, most of them are now prioritizing winning the SEA games and are sending their best eligible players who are also members of the senior national team to the U-23 team for the SEA games. Case in point, Singapore has decided to transfer 7 players from the senior team to the U-23 team and will send a weakened side to the WC qualifying team that will participate in November. Reaction to the draw from the Indonesian perspective: http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/spor...raw-for-sea-games-football-competition/472739 Malaysian perspective: http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v5/newssport.php?id=621122 Singaporean perspective: http://ligasingapura.blogspot.com/2011/10/sea-games-football-2011.html BTW in the last article, it mentions that since Thailand still has chances in WC qualifying, 5 members of the squad that are also eligible to be members of the U-23 team will remain with the mens team. That will weaken your team to the SEA games and make it more difficult to get out of such a tough group.

Malaysia is sounding very confident in this article: http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/Malaysiain__8216_dangerous__8217_groupPrinted/Article/ Deputy Sports Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim, however, said the draw should not matter as Malaysia would have to meet the strong teams eventually to retain the gold medal. “I am confident we can get through the group stage if the team employ the right strategy. As the defending champions, it is the other teams who should fear us. SEA GAMES 2011: TOUGH FOR THAILAND TO WIN GOLD October 20, 2011 BANGKOK (20 Oct 2011) – Former champions Thailand admitted that it will be tough for them to win the gold in men’s football at the SEA Games next month after being grouped in what can only be termed as the ‘Group of Death’ for the biennial championship. Other than having to face hosts Indonesia in the same Group A, the Thais will also have to get the better of defending champions Malaysia, Singapore and Cambodia. Group B are Vietnam, Laos, Brunei, East Timor, Myanmar and the Philippines. Datuk Worawi Makudi, the president of the FA of Thailand (FAT) admitted that the team had a mountain to climb to regain the gold medal. “We are in a really tough group,” said Worawi. “I don’t know why they did not have seeding in the draw. But we have to accept it and be well-prepared for the task.” Added Thailand manager Kasem Jariyawatwong said: “We must be at full strength if we are to win the gold medal. We won’t underestimate any team but we are ready to face any team.” In the meantime, Thailand have announced their 20-man squad for the SEA Games with BEC Tero Sasana striker Ronnachai Rangsiyo leading the way. The team will play two warm-up games against Songkhla FC on 25 Oct then then against Nepal 31 Oct. Men’s football at this year’s SEA Games will start on 3 Nov. THAILAND GOALKEEPERS: Ukrit Wongmeena (Buriram FC), Panupong Pijitthum (Chai Nan FC) DEFENDERS: Chalermsak Kaewsuktae (Chai Nat FC), Chalermkiat Butnet and Ekkasit Chaobut (both Bangkok FC), Sujarit Jantakol (Sri Racha FC), Komkrit Kumsokchuek (Bangkok United), Seekate Martputae (Pattaya United), Weerawut Kayem (Muang Thong), Wasant Homsan (Bangkok Glass) MIDFIELDERS: Pokklao Anan (Insee Police), Pollawut Donjui (Bangkok United), Naruepol Ar-romsawa (Muang Thong), Attapol Nooprom and Krirkrit Taweekarn (both Sri Racha FC), Natarit Thammarotsophon (BEC Tero), Sarat Yooyen (FC Phuket) STRIKERS: Ronnachai Rangsiyo (BEC Tero), Adisak Kraisorn (Buriram PEA), Issarapong Leelakorn (PTT-Rayong) http://www.aseanfootball.org/?p=6363
Pre-tournament Friendlies: (Source futbol24.com) : 10/21 Brunei 0-4 Laos FT Malaysia 2-1 Myanmar FT Vietnam 1-1 Uzbekistan FT 10/20 Brunei U-23 2-1 Indonesia U-23 FT 10/19 Vietnam U-23 5-0 Myanmar U-23 FT Uzbekistan U-23 3-1 Malaysia U-23 FT 10/12 Laos U-23 3-2 Indonesia U-23 FT The win by Brunei over Indonesia is a little surprising even though Indonesia probably did not bring their full squad. Laos is strong at the U-23 level as I believed they reached the semifinals in the last SEA games which they hosted. Keep in mind however, that these are just friendlies, with teams experimenting with their lineups and players probably missing. Update: Acc. to David in the Indonesian thread, the Indo U-23 squad is in Jakarta and never played the above matches. It is possible that they were played by a local Indo selection. Misleading info by futbol24.com Philippine U-23 friendlies against local clubs: 10/20 U-23 4-2 Airforce Phoenix FC 10/21 U-23 9-1 Laos FC Philippine U-23 will be embarking for Japan training camp.
So SEA Games is soon, does this mean that the AFF U23 competition that was postponed earlier this year has also been cancelled full stop?
druryfire, Yup. that tournament was supposed to be a training ground for the Palembang organizers in preparing for the football tournament but they weren't able to get the stadium and other details finished in time, so they moved the football tournament to Jakarta instead, advanced the football tournament a week(Nov. 3) ahead of the actual games and cancelled the AFF U-23 preparatory tournament. Other countries have scheduled minitournaments instead like the ongoing VFF tournament in Hanoi. Unfortunately for the Philippines, they still haven't played an international friendly, as a full team yet, because of scheduling difficulties, player unavailability and the fact that they were prioritizing the men's team with only one coach for both of them. They will start their training camp in Japan though in a few days with hopefully the full team finally getting together. drury, any chance you can give us a preview on the Thailand team?
I'd love to, but I just don't know the players who are in the squad, by all means I could say he/them should eb good because of the club they play for for example but I couldn't give an honest opinion. I'll ask a few 'farang' friends who will know a bit more than me, but with the current floods in the area, minds might be elsewhere. As for the SEA Games, I know Thail's love it. It's big. I can talk to a native about the TPL or senior national team for example and it feels like talking to a brick wall as they much prefer the English Premier League, but talk SEA Games and they are with it. To myself, it appears like more important than AFF Championship at times, but I also can't get with it, it's like an Olympics to me, it's great to win, but doesn't really matter if you don't for instance. Again, I asked about the AFF U23 championship as to me that has more importance than SEA Games, don't ask me why, but thats how I feel. I remember now beign in Thailand in 2009 for the upcoming SEA Games, I watched on TV a Laos channel and a swimming event, they had the national swimming championships to determine who would represent Laos, it was held in a swimming pool in what looked like someones house with no spectators, can't help but make me feel that this is what makes me feel distant from it.
druryfire, The SEA Games is big in our part of the world. In football especially Thailand has a right to feel that they have proprieitary rights to the gold medal, since they have won it 13 times, half of the total gold medals awarded in the game. Because our region is not exactly a superpower at the world level in sports except in a few events, therefore the SEA games counts as our Olympics, with the overall champion as well as the gold medalist for the most popular sport, football, getting bragging rights for the next 2 years. It is a serious business, with host countries choosing sports they can excel in and disregarding the ones they feel they have no hope in medaling(e.g. Indonesia cancelled the women's football tournament) as well as occasionally manipulating the rules, so they can get ahead of the competition. I don't know it doesn't make sense to you guys outside the region but it does to us. Besides, it is the oldest regional sports subgrouping in Asia dating from 1959 and was eventually copied by other regions in Asia and allows athletes in the region to compete and be exposed to sports that they would normally would have no interest in. As for the smaller countries in SEA like Laos, Cambodia and Timor Leste, it is understandable why their facilities is not exactly up to par, they just don't have the economy to build better facilities. That is understable. Nevertheless the SEA games still gives them a venue to participate and enjoy the games even winning a few medals in the process.
In his followup of his Grp A's analysis a few days ago, here is Eric Noveanto's follow up of Group B 26th Sea Games – Football : Analysis of Group B 1. Vietnam, the most prepared very well team ahead of 26th Sea Games, they held some of international friendly tournament and got a satisfactory progress so far, have a certain quality of youngsters so that based on paper this group absolutely should belong to Vietnam. 2. Philippines, their football has improved a lot recently in both of senior and junior level, armed with the several of European based players, this team is predicted to show a major surprise in this tournament. Semi-finals is a realistic target for them. 3. Laos, have a very promising junior team in this year, showed a significant development in recent years, especially after the previous sea games in 2009, which they were the host. Predicted to be a “dark horse” that is able to subvert the dominance of the current Southeast Asian’s powerhouse during this period. 4. Myanmar, basically is the one of the “sleeping giant” in Asian football, especially in Southeast Asia, but lately they gave the appearance that far from the expectations of the Myanmar’s public. This team is probably to startle the other participants but still predicted to be struggled in the group stage matches. 5. Timor Leste, the 26th sea games will be their second appearance during their participation in this tournament, in general there are not many things that stand out from this team as the newly developing football nations. The quality of the team is still far below the fourth opponent, although slightly above than Brunei. 6. Brunei Darussalam, their return after the sanction given by FIFA last few years provide a glimmer of hope for the people of Brunei, by no means to discouraging their chances, they are predicted to be finished only in the group stage due to the quality of their current squad are deemed not qualified enough to compete at the top level of Southeast Asian football. The Conclusion : the first position seems to have been booked by Vietnam, for the runner-up will be contested between the Philippines and Laos, while Myanmar may also have the potential to achieve it. In the other side, Timor Leste and Brunei Darussalam will likely struggle to avoid defeat by a big margin in the scoreline. http://seafootball.wordpress.com/2011/10/21/26th-sea-games-–-football-analysis-of-group-b/
Oh yeah Pele, I understand it is massive is the SEA Games, I understand that, but I've never understood why the football tournament seems to be bigger then the AFF Championship itself. Now, yes, it's the part of the world I'm brought up in, but 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup, my Thai in laws not bothered, and there's me an Englishman routing for Thailand, yet come SEA Games it's different, but again the Thailand National Games, just like Laos before in my previous post are low key yet these are the guys who represent you. Put it this way, from my outside view, I'm not too interested (in the football), the claim from the winners doesn't really hold too much with me, I don't know why this is because as you knw I get behind the AFF U19 & U16 Championships for example, but this just doesn't do it for me, maybe it's because i'm on the outside looking in, I don't no.
Most of the gold medals that Thailand won was during a time when the SEA games was played by the full team and it was the most important football tournament in the region. Now of course the Suzuki Cup carries that reputation but it is the overall context of our Olympics, the SEA games that burnishes the football gold medalist's significance. Some countries would rather win or consider it just as important to win the gold medal in football than the overall championship as a matter of fact. As for me, youth football championships at the world or regional level, even though I follow them outside of the SEA games, doesn't really hold too much weight as I consider them developmental competitions, with the goal of providing players international experience. Most countries in Europe feel the same way I think, prioritizing club schedules and needs, to those of their national youth teams.
Just like David80 said Indonesia didn't play those friendly games against Laos and Brunei. http://www.saigon-gpdaily.com.vn/Sport/2011/10/97523/ SEA Games warm-up: Vietnam draw with Uzbekistan The Vietnam Football Federation Cup match between U23 Vietnam and U 23 Uzbekistan ended with a 1-1 draw at Hanoi’s My Dinh National Stadium Friday though the hosts deserved a win. The home side created five very clear chances but converted just one of them into a goal. About three minutes after Uzbekistan opened fire with a close range shot in the 53rd minute, Vietnam equalized. From a corner kick on the right by captain and playmaker Pham Thanh Luong, midfielder Nguyen Van Quyet headed the ball into Uzbekistan’s net. Van Quyet later struck the ball hard on the bar of Uzbekistan’s goal – the ball bounced to the ground and it seemed to pass the goal line – but the referee had no reaction. So far, FIFA, the world’s football governing body, has yet to use goal line technology. U23 Vietnam captain Pham Thanh Luong (R) fights for the ball with an Uzbek player during their game in the Vietnam Football Federation Cup at Hanoi’s My Dinh National Stadium on Oct. 21, 2011. (Photo: Cong Minh) After the home side equalized, Vietnamese defender Chu Ngoc Anh was sent off with his second yellow card. Ten-man Vietnam did not reduced their attack tempo but the draw score did not change. In the earlier game of the Friday matchday, Southeast Asia Games defending champions U23 Malaysia beat U23 Myanmar 2-1. U23 Vietnam now lead the Vietnam Football Federation Cup, a warm up competition for SEA Games in Indonesia November, although they got four points as the Uzbek side did. The Malaysia team are third, and Myanmar fourth of the four participating teams. The home side defeated Myanmar 5-0 on Wednesday after Malaysia lost 1-3 to Uzbekistan. The final matchday Sunday will see Vietnam take on Malaysia and Myanmar play Uzbekistan. In the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia next month, the hosts are in Group A together with defending champions Malaysia, regional powerhouse Thailand, Singapore and Cambodia. Group B has six teams: Brunei, East Timor, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam.
Here is an article stating how Vietnam is aiming for the SEA gold medal. The Vietnam coach seems to think that Vietnam and Myanmar will come out of Group B. http://www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=740529&publicationSubCategoryId=200 Vietnam's very experienced German coach, Falko Goetz(12 years of German Club football as head coach) seems to be overlooking the Philippines. Understandable I guess, since he or for that matter anybody else including us, have never seen our full team play. He has reasons to be optimistic though, as his team has already whitewashed Myanmar's U-23 team 5-0 in the abovementioned tournament and just tied a very strong Uzbekistan team(1-1) that has already defeated the Malaysian U-23 team 3-1 as well as defeat another strong Iraqi team 2-0 in an Olympic qualifier. From these and previous results, I rate Vietnam, Indonesia, as well as defending champions Malaysia as the favourites in the SEA games tournament. BTW, nice to be overlooked. Same thing happened in the Suzuki Cup when we topped Vietnam 2-0. I bet these 2 German coaches will be shaking each other's hands this time around though. haha Regardless, great results for Vietnam in the VFF Cup. This definitely installs them as betting favourites in Group B to top the group.
Another look at the draw and the preparations made by some teams: http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2011/10/20/ri-malaysia-teams-draw-deadly-group-a.html Malaysia is considered as the most prepared team for the Games after playing several friendly matches against Arsenal and Liverpool. “We had three months of training in Slovakia for the Games. Three of our national team members were offered to join local clubs. Six of our players for this SEA Games were the ones who played and won in the 2009 Games,” said Soccer Association of Malaysia general-secretary Dato Azziuddin Ahmad.
