Joe Girardi announced that CC Sabathia will not pitch again during the close of the regular season, so he won't have another chance at 20 wins. He'll end up with 19. CC will throw a simulated game on Sunday. He'll start the first game of the ALDS next Friday. If Los Angeles wins the Wild Card and the Yanks have the best A.L. record, it will be Yankees-Angels next Friday. If the Rays or Red Sox are the Wild Card and the Yanks have the best A.L. record, they will play the team with the worst record between Detroit and Texas. (The Rangers have not clinched the West Division yet, but are 5 games ahead of the Angels.) vs. Boston Red Sox (88-68) at Yankee Stadium Fri.- Freddy Garcia (11-8, 3.77) vs. Jon Lester (15-8, 3.15); 7:05 on YES, MLBN Sat.- A.J. Friday night's game has been rained out. The Yankees and Red Sox will play a day/night doubleheader on Sunday.
Both Rays and Angels lost yesterday. Texas clinched the West Division. vs. Boston Red Sox (88-68) at Yankee Stadium Sat.- Freddy Garcia (11-8, 3.77) vs. Jon Lester (15-8, 3.15); 4:10 on FOX Sun.- A.J. This is so telling right here. Freddy Garcia (12-8, 3.62) vs. Jon Lester (15-9, 3.49); One is heralded as an ace in the making and the other shouldn't even be in the rotation. People like Stephen A Smith ripping Freddy to shreds and yet he's matching Lester who is part of the greatest team ever assembled. Sheesh. Even AJ matches up to Lackey and yet he's the untouchable cancer of the team.
Matching up with the Red Sox pitching rotation is like bragging about taking a 280 pound girl to the prom.
The Yankees are assured of having the best record in the American League because of yesterday's action, so they'll have home field advantage in the ALDS and ALCS. I'm thrilled Freddy Garcia pitched so well on Saturday. There seems to be a push on in the press to have Burnett named as the Yanks third starter in the ALDS -- with Garcia being regarded as some kind of fluke. WTF! Freddy has done it all season and has earned that slot. Jesus Montero went 3-for-4 with a single, double, homer and 4 RBIs. He's batting .346 with 4 home runs and 12 RBIs since joining the Yankees. He's also hitting .550 (11-for 20) against lefties! Girardi better make sure this guy is our DH in the post-season. A.L. Wild Card Boston: 88-69 .561 Tampa Bay: 87-71 .551 (1½) Los Angeles: 86-72 .544 (2½)
The Red Sox collapse continues with 6-2 Yankee victory in today's first game. A.J. Burnett gave up a couple of solo shots to Jacoby Ellsbury but otherwise pitched well and got a standing ovation when he left after 7 2/3. Posada hit a 2-run homer. Yanks have won 6 of 7 on this homestand against the Rays and Red Sox. Tampa Bay beat Toronto 5-2, so... A.L. Wild Card Boston: 88-70 .561 Tampa Bay: 88-71 .557 (½) Los Angeles: 86-72 .553 (2)
Joe Girardi said if Phil Hughes makes the ALDS roster it will be as a reliever. He will not be starting in any of the final 3 games of the season but is available from the bullpen. I'm sure they'll get him out there at some point just to be sure his back is okay. Girardi has no idea who he is going to pitch in the final game on Wednesday. He said, "It might be a bullpen day." That's nice, but somebody has to start it. I say Dellin Betances! Tuesday's Tampa Bay starter Jeremy Hellickson is a rival of Ivan Nova for the Rookie of the Year award. vs. Tampa Bay Rays (88-71) at Tropicana Field Mon.- Hector Noesi (2-1, 4.14) vs. James Shields (15-12, 2.84); 7:10 on YES Tue.- Bartolo Colon (8-10, 4.02) vs. Jeremy Hellickson (13-10, 2.90); 7:10 on WWOR Wed.- To Be Determined vs. David Price (12-13, 3.35); 7:10 on YES, MLBN A.L. Record New York: 97-62 .610 Texas: 93-66 .585 (4) Detroit: 92-67 .579 (5) The Yankees will play the team with the worst record between Texas and Detroit -- provided the Wild Card is Boston or Tampa Bay. If Texas and Detroit end up tied, the Yanks face Texas. In the unlikely event Los Angeles takes the Wild Card, they will play the Yankees. Matchups for the last 3 games: New York at Tampa Bay Boston at Baltimore Cleveland at Detroit Texas at Los Angeles
Yanks lose to Tampa Bay, 5-2. Hughes was brought in for 1 2/3 innings of relief. He gave up 1 hit, 2 walks, with 1 strikeout. Girardi says he will pitch him again Wednesday, possibly as the starter. Boston lost to Baltimore. Texas beat Los Angeles so the Angels are out of the wild card race. Detroit slaughtered Cleveland. I'm pissed we're not going to win 100. Is that selfish? vs. Tampa Bay Rays (89-71) at Tropicana Field Tue.- Bartolo Colon (8-10, 4.02) vs. Jeremy Hellickson (13-10, 2.90); 7:10 on WWOR Wed.- Phil Hughes (5-5, 5.86) vs. David Price (12-13, 3.35); 7:10 on YES, MLBN A.L. Yes, you need to think of bigger and more important things. Namely the Red Sox being completely and utterly humiliated.
Come on you Orioles. Bring this most epic of collapses to its natural conclusion. 2-1 Sux (3rd) 2-1 Rays (3rd)
Yanks lose 5-3. Russell Martin hit into a triple play! Boston beats Baltimore. Texas and Detroit both won. Phil Hughes won't be starting today but will definately be used in relief. The Yankees still have not announced an official starting pitcher. Final day of the season -- unless Tampa Bay and Boston need a playoff game on Thursday to decide the Wild Card. That game would count as part of the regular season. A.L. East New York: 97-64 .602 Boston: 90-71 .559 (7) Tampa Bay: 90-71 .559 (7) Toronto: 80-81 .497 (17) Baltimore: 68-93 .422 (29) A.L. as a Mutts fan...I'm just very sorry...the Wilpons are idiots... http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2011/09/izenberg_mets_blocked_yankees_plan.html
I saw this story earlier and almost posted about it, but I would have blasted The Crosstown Rivals and I didn't want to start a back-and-forth since their fans are in a sour mood anyway. Let's just say it makes the Mets look petty and stupid. Even the office of Gov. Chris Christie called the Mets to get them to reconsider and they refuse.
Joe Girardi has finally decided on tonight's starter. Good choice! vs. Tampa Bay Rays (90-71) at Tropicana Field Wed.- Dellin Betances (0-0, 27.00) vs. David Price (12-13, 3.35); 7:10 on YES, MLBN
Wow how about this ass kicking through 2.5?? If I were a Devils Rays fan I'd be opening a vein about now.
Yanks 5-0 up after 3. 2-2 between the Orioles and the Scum. Come on Baltimore. Come onnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!
Teixeira just hit his second homer of the game. 5 RBIs on the night. Yanks up 6-0 in the fourth. Boston leads 3-2 in the fifth.
wow. that looked like a fix to me. Longoria absolutely knew he was hitting that one out. I have to admit with Boston leading I am a bit torn here.
