2011 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship set for April 3-17 in Guatemala

CHICAGO (Sept. 2, 2010) – The U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team has learned the dates and location for the 2011 CONCACAF U-20 Championship, which will be held from April 3-17 in Guatemala.

The event will qualify four teams to the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Colombia from July 29-Aug. 20. In April, CONCACAF announced that the event will be played with 12 teams for the first time since 1996, with Canada, Mexico and the United States joining five teams from the Caribbean and four teams from Central America.

The U.S. finished second at the 2009 CONCACAF U-20 Championship, advancing to the final without allowing a single goal before falling 3-0 to Costa Rica.

With clubs not required to release players for this, Rongen has more than 6 months to kiss some club managers' ass to get players released

So there's a new format of 12 teams. I'm assuming that there will be a quarterfinal round, where the top two teams from each group qualify, plus the two best 3rd place teams.

That means that there will be plenty of room for error in the group stage, but the quarterfinal match will be do-or-die. With luck, our QF opponent will be some weak 3rd place team.
