Isidro Metapan (SLV) vs. Caribbean club champion Mexican Clausura runner-up (Morelia or Pumas) vs. Caribbean club championship runner-up Herediano (CRC) vs. Caribbean club championship third-place finisher Info from here.
lol Caribbean Championship just got interesting.. I'm pretty sure they're gonna try to avoid playing the Mexican Clausua champs. won't be surprised if I see one of these teams give away the game and fight for the 3rd spot. and I expect for whoever get into the final to fight as hard as possible for that 1st spot which will guarentee a game worth watching.
Real excited to watch this one. It will be interesting, yet very very disappointing to see the (inevitable) gamesmanship during the semifinal. Will there be any online broadcasts from the Islanders/CFU/Concacaf? I'd imagine that Providence is certainly capable of such a thing. There is no doubt in my mind that the top one or two CFU seeds deserve a better grouping than they do. To put the Caribbean champion below the top seeds of Panama and El Salvador is a shame. Of course, that won't ever happen, because it would involve hurting a US or Central American club, but the fact that multiple CFU clubs beat them and make it to the group stage every year indicates that they deserve better.
CFU 1 basically has the same starting point as El Salvador's top seed given how the draw worked out just pretend they were the high seed in the draw. At this point it won't matter much. Now if we are talking about Panama's top seed then that is a different story because thats an automatic group spot which I think the CFU does deserve and will probably eventually get because even CONCACAF can't be that shady forever.
Puerto Rico Islanders defeat Alpha United 3 - 1 (aet) and Tempête FC won on penalty shootout (4 - 2) against Defence Force (0 - 0). Puerto Rico Islanders and Tempête FC qualified for the preliminary round. The 3rd spot will be determined on May 27 between Alpha United FC and Defence Force FC.
05/26/2011 PR Islanders qualify for CCL for fourth time GEORGETOWN, Guyana - Jonathan Fana and David Foley both scored in extra time to give the Puerto Rico Islanders a 3-1 victory over host Alpha United on Wednesday and claim a fourth straight berth in the CONCACAF Champions League. Puerto Rico will be joined by Tempete FC of Haiti, which outlasted Defence Force of Trinidad 4-2 on penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw in the first match of Wednesday's semifinals doubleheader in the CFU Club Champions Cup. Alpha and Defence Force will play in the third-place match on Friday in Georgetown for the last of the Caribbean's three berths in the Champions League. Puerto Rico will then play Tempete for the title. The Islanders have played in the semifinals each of the past four years in the Caribbean club championship and will be seeking a second straight title. Matthew Bouraee gave Puerto Rico the lead in the 23rd minute but Dwain Jacobs equalize for the Guyanese side 14 minutes later. Fana put Puerto Rico ahead in the 108th minute and Foley added the insurance eight minutes later to leave it one of only three teams to have qualified every year since the Champions League began in 2008. In the early match, Junior Charles, Paul Valdano, Joachin Gregory and Cadet Changler all converted their penalty attempts, while Rawle Fletcher and Anton Joseph missed the last two for Defence Force to give Tempete the victory. Wednesday's results leave only two berths open in the 24-team Champions League field. Besides the third berth from the Caribbean, Canada's sport is undecided. The second leg of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship between Toronto and Vancouver was abandoned Wednesday night in Toronto due to heavy rain and lightning. It has been rescheduled for a replay on July 2. http://www.concacaf.com/page/CL/NewsDetail/0,,12813~2367526,00.html
Alpha United upset Defence Force in PKs and become the 1st Guyanese team in CCL history. For the 1st time ever, there will be no T&T team in the CCL.
Congrats to the PR Islanders. Faña scored 2 goals in a.e.t. to lead PR to repeat as CFU Club Champions in a 3-1 victory.
