2011-2012 Bundesliga Match Day 10 Borussia Dortmund Versus 1. FC Köln Saturday, October 22, 2011 3:30 PM (CET) Westfalenstadion, Dortmund I didn’t do anything for this match before now because I’m still angry as all hell at that embarrassment in Greece this past Wednesday. Two historical points. o 1. FC Köln has not beaten Borussia Dortmund since August 2003: BVB has won eight of the last nine meetings between the two clubs. The only blemish was a scoreless draw on February 12, 2006 in Köln. o 1. FC Köln has not beaten Borussia Dortmund in Dortmund since April 1991: Since then, BVB has won 13 of the 14 meetings between the two clubs in Dortmund. The only blemish was a 3-3 draw on May 19, 2001. 1. FC Köln comes into the match having won three of their past four Bundesliga matches. However, all three of their victories during this stretch have come at home. They lost their only away match in this stretch, 3-0 at Berlin. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund comes into the match on a three-match winning streak in the Bundesliga. However, during this time, there have also been two embarrassing losses in the Champions’ League. But, BVB has usually bounced back from European embarrassments with strong Bundesliga performances in the past two seasons. Hopefully, BVB will again on Saturday……..

Smithfan said Terrence Boyd was called up for this match with the 1st team. Did you see anything on that?
Kagawa sould not be starting this game after how he played in greece. Maybe kuba on the right and move goetze in the middle .
What else is new? Teams have realized that this is the best way to match up to us and then hit us on the break...and make their chances count while we continuously miss ours....that being said; Schmelzer!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2-0, 24th minute. First goal eva for Schmelzer!!!
Leitner on for Bender, 58th min. He had a great match. What the fuck does Kagawa have to do for the refs to call a foul his way?
With 5 minutes to go...other results have so far gone our way as well...we may end up 2nd after this match date. Bremen, Stuttgart and Gladbach all failed to pick up points so far. Well, Koeln with their 1st shot on target during the 56th minute.
Unbelievable, when would the last time be that BVB restricted another Bundesliga opponent from a single shot on target for the first 80mins of a match?
I would love to say it was all because we played an amazing match - which we did, but I think a lot of this had to do with Koeln looking like we did in midweek. Lost. I don't want to take anything away from our boys but Koeln didn't show up to play today...I mean, where were they? In the end, we took advantage of the circumstances but I'm pretty sure we were also fired up. We did everything right. 3 points and 2nd in the league.
I think Köln really screwed up when they failed to pick up Kagawa all match. He practically ran the attack as he had all the space in the world to thread passes, make runs and bring others in. He was finally excellent and happy to see him get the goal he deserved. Bender for me was the stand out player however. Two asssists aside (four this season?) he chocked every Köln attack or attempt to get the ball out of their half and not only deputized in his usual destroyer role but today's match shows just how many other qualities he possesses, including smart link up play and excellent vision and off-the ball running. He is having another very good season for me. While many will maybe not agree, I think Hummels was again superb, not in a defensive sense as last week but he played his dual-role to perfection today. The little he dealt with Podolski he had the latter in his pocket but it was his attacking game that was on full display today. Just watch the match back and see how many of Dortmund's attack initiate with him, including some immaculate long passes that found their target that led to goals - it would make Beckham or Xabi Alonso proud. Superb.
He was on the bench. I reported it when he posted on Facebook that he would be on the match day roster.
Spot on Cris. I like this reaction from the team. However, beating up on Augsburg and Köln at home after European embarrassments hardly proves anything. I'm happy the team did what they were supposed to do. But as of right now, that 2-0 last week in Bremen "proves" more to me than beating up on a bad 1. FC Köln team. Especially a bad 1. FC Köln team who went into the match missing three, possibly four to five important players from their starting lineup. Enjoy the victory. But let's keep it real too. Beating up on what was essentially an 1. FC Köln "B" side "proves" nothing. It was just the right reaction after f#cking embarrassing themselves and us in Europe once again. The good news besides the victory for me? a) Kagawa finally found the net again. b) Lewandowski keeps up his hot hand. c) They beat a clearly inferior team they way they should have. Now, as I've said before, this emphatic victory "proves" nothing. But it was the reaction we all hoped to see. Well, all of us BVB fans anyhow.......

He really only made one mistake as he should have awarded a penalty kick to Dortmund for a seventeenth minute foul by Köln’s Sereno against Mats Hummels. Goal Chances - Borussia Dortmund: 9 ----- 1. FC Köln: 3 Corners Won - Borussia Dortmund: 2 ----- 1. FC Köln: 3 Match Rating: 2.5 – The spectators witnessed a football spectacle. Albeit a very one-sided spectacle...... Spectators: 80,720 (Sold Out) Man of the Match: Mats Hummels (center above celebrating the Schmelzer goal): Helped control the offense from the back four. Hummels made great passes with computer-like precision. He started the process for three of the five BVB goals. Coaches’ Comments: Jürgen Klopp: “We realize the importance of goals in a game. Today, our counter-pressing and attacking games were outstanding. (They were) Much better than our opponent’s. It is very difficult to defend us the way we played today. We really had the counter-pressing machine going and we actually backed off in the middle of the second half. It was a great match (for us) and fun to watch. The guys played without pressure and won deservedly.” Stale Solbakken: “We played poorly and there is a great difference between the two teams. I believe after the second goal, we had already lost belief we could come out with a good result.”
