Mexico will be kicking themselves if they lose because they dominated the game completely in the first half. I kind of expected South Africa to avoid defeat somehow though since the previous 19 World Cup hosts have 14 wins and 5 draws in their opening matches.

I can't believe that they tied South Africa.
They had so many legit opportunities and South Africa had 2 good late chances to put it away.

    Opening game jitters

Wow what a game..nice start to the world cup thou i feel really sorry for s.africa cos they had so many 1 on 1 chances...and mphela should've scored that last one but then again mexico was really threatening too..overall a very entertaining game nd i think 1-1 is a fair result.

South Africa shouldn't have conceded that equaliser. Very poor communication and marking by their defence.

What a total offside trap failure by SA defense on Marquez goal

Good opening match to start the tournament but the goal the South Africans conceded was pretty poor.

The goal the South Africans scored was gangster.

Hahaha and talk about a blast from the past Blanco haha.

Marquez coulda passed to a teammate, who coulda just dribbled the ball into the goal. Good thing he made his shot, or people would have been all over him.

Marquez's goal was pretty nice. He fooled the goalkeeper by going inside so all credit to him. The South African goal also had a nice finish, but I thought it was offsides at first though and that celebration dance was rather lame, in my opinion. Most people on BS seemed to love it though.

Actually, if he passes to a teammate, that would have been off-side. Odd, but this is why breakaways in football are tricky (as opposed to, say, basketball).

I was laughing so hard at the ESPN commentator saying that the Mexican guy was not offside.

I thought his teammates were still onside, but you're right that you don't get the same sort of breakaway fast breaks like in basketball.

Yeah, that was a great finish on that SA goal. Right in the corner. No goalie alive is going to stop that shot.

Ugh I wanted South Africa to win. Both teams played well I thought Mexico playing better most of the time. It felt like South Africa let a cheap goal in but at least they got a point. It could've easily been 2-0 in the first half for Mexico.

I hope France loses. Fck France.

Group A certainly is interesting. I wonder who we'll face in the next round. :D

Mexico didn't seem very impressive to me. A lot of standing around and waiting for the ball. A SA error gifted them that Marquez goal, although all credit has to be given to him for a sublime first touch and a clinical finish. SA seem the typical African side; full of energy and physicality but a mental error will be their demise (as it was in this match). They still seem to be a lethal counter-attacking team. The buildup to their goal was just absolutely marvelous; I was pissed that ESPN kept showing replays of the goal only. There was much more replay-worthy material going on before that great strike!

I hope France and Uruguay also underperform. Can only spell good things for the Group B winner and runner-up.

Also, I wonder how much altitude played a factor, although Mexico plays at altitude as well (Azteca Stadium 2,240m). Mexico just seemed really stagnant and slow and there wasn't much off the ball movement for them. I didn't see much of the first half in which I understand they were bossing the game, but the 2nd seemed pretty uninspiring. Even a goal down they didn't seem very motivated.

Uruguay v France... This is a hard call... I'm leaning towards Uruguay to win though.

Forlan made a brilliant strike but the goal keeper stopped it. So far Uruguay making a lot of sloppy passes but their fowards look very dangerous upfront (Forlan and Suarez) but France is dominating them in possession.

Ribery picks up a yellow too. I remember something about fouling a person who beat you is cardable? Is that why both Evra/Ribery received yellows?

Is Uraguay playing 5-3-2 formation? i missed the pre-match stuff? They have so many defenders in the box.
